Another Oscar winner that hasn't been mentioned much lately if at all since I joined here. It may not be exactly as good as Chris Columbus's other big scripts of the period, but it's pretty far up there. Nicholas Hammond is the perfect Holmes, easily mirroring the traits Doyle shows the older Holmes having in his series, and the rest of the hithertofore young cast plays well off him. Sure, the ending's more melencholy than need have been, but it does go a long way towards Holmes' disattachement to people later in life. The mystery here's good not necessarily in the cerebral sense, but in the sheer joy of discovery from start to end. Too bad they don't make them like this anymore.

You opinions?

I've always liked this despite its many faults. I read an article recently which claimed that the entire Harry Potter series was inspired by Young Sherlock Holmes! It was all drivel along the lines of: "They're both adventure stories set in boys boarding schools'. 'Watson looks like Harry Potter'. Chris Columbus directed the first HP film etc etc.

Anyway . . . I agree that the two lead actors play their parts well and are swept along by a great score by Bruce Braughton (sp?), great art direction and some good special effects. Definitely overlooked.
