Are alot of 80's movies still not out on DVD?? It seems like there has been a real hault with studios releasing some of the older or not as well known titles but that doesn't mean there isn't an audience out there. I mean, we had some luck last year with Teen Witch and License to Drive but I'm feeling kind of bummed. I want to be able to go to Best Buy or Amazon or wherever and pick up some new/old movies. It's annoying because Fast Times and Ferris Bueller now exist in 2 editions and yet so many others haven't even been considered. So what are you guys still waiting on? Here goes my list and you know what's first...

 - PRIVATE SCHOOL
 - Fire with Fire
 - Modern Girls
 - Where the Boys Are '84
 - Hardbodies
 -
 - Meatballs 2 & 3
 - Endless Love

Cindy, it's definitely not just you. I would buy every single movie on your list. Of course, "Private School" would be first on my list as you can see from the bumper sticker from my car.

Private School is at the top of my list too.

Cindy...a "friend" put Meatballs 2 on DVD for me...he had sent it to me on VHS too...and I haven't watched it ever. I know I should.

I'd like to see Hardbodies on DVD too.

I have never seen Where the Boys are 84.

I would like to see Curse 2-The Bite and Rich Girl on DVD.

"Moving" is still at the top of my list...

I'd like to have "The Monster Squad" and "Lady in White" on DVD. I didn't know until about a month ago that "O.C. and Stiggs" was available on DVD. I happened across it on Amazon. Otherwise I wouldn't have known. It's not like my local Walmart carries it...

I have quite a few 80s titles I want on DVD, but I could be here a long time if I listed them.

I definitely want an official DVD of "Private School", though. I wrote the page on this movie, so it's a natural. The copy that I do have is a bootleg that I bought off of eBay. It's good but I still want an official copy, preferrably with extras.

They're releasing this movie's predecessor "Private Lessons" in a few months, complete with new interviews with the director and Martin Mull (who appears in "...Lessons" and "...School").

Universal is really starting to irritate me by holding off on "Private School", so I have this to say to the studio:

"You're breaking my heart, Universal...You're tearing it apart, so (bleep) you!".

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

John, that was quite possibly the most clever use of that song ever!! You do rock steady in my book!!

"All I wanted was a DVD of Private School now we're through."

I know, I don't know why some of the really good ones have been passed over for say the likes of a dumb movie like the very first one that Adam Sandler was in the took place on a boat or something??

I guess some of our 80s stars are gonna have to hit it big for this stuff to get released. I definately remember when Travolta came out in Pulp Fiction and his new found popularity got Urban Cowboy re-released on VHS. I remember being so excited about that because the only way I could see that one was if I would catch it on TBS or HBO.

I have been praying to the movie Gods about some of our favorites but so far they haven't been paying attention. I want NIGHT OF THE COMET to get released. I mean what is up with that. It is a cult classic and deserves to be released to the public.

The only thing I can say is "good things come to those who wait" and we sure know we have been way to patient!!

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Jessie, "Night Of The Comet" is #2 on my list. I've heard this movie is tangled up in a web of legality about who owns the rights to the movie. The director was once interviewed and he stated that it might never get the DVD release it deserves.

I’ve only seen three of those movies: ‘Endless Love’ should get a DVD release, after all, its Franco Zeffirelli for goodness sake (apparently, there’s a three hour director’s cut languishing in the archives somewhere), whilst Virginia Madsen’s renewed popularity (after ‘Sideways’) may prompt a release of ‘Modern Girls’ and ‘Fire with Fire’ but bear in mind, many actors/actresses aren’t that fond of their earlier roles, and may not be too keen in reviving their old image just as they’re trying to create a new one.

pettyfan, Lady in White *is* out on DVD. See our page for the movie or the DVD Wizard for more details [Smile]

Night Of The Comet and THe Keep are two high on my list (One Dark Night is now out on DVD, so one more notch off the belt thank god)........problem is both are like buried in rights issues.

As someone above mentioned, I think Night of the Comet is in one of those Rights-hells, where nobody knows who owns it and nobody thinks it'll make enough money to pay lawyers to find out how to un-tangle it. (they're probably right..unless it was a crappy bare-bones release with no restoration).

The same thing with the KEEP, although there I hear the problem is that Tangerine Dream, the band who provides the heavy synth soundtrack, wants alot more money to license the soundtrack than anyone is willing to give them to release the film. I saw it a few years ago on one of the cable channels that shows "B" movies, and it was as good..and bad...as I remember it.

i'd want it on DVD, but I'm guessing I'm in a pretty big Minority [Smile]

It is, however, one of Michael Mann's films, which is why the whole thing feels like a Miami Vice episode [Smile] Michael Mann is responsible for some of my favorite 80's stuff (Crime Story and Miami Vice on TV, Manhunter (the movie))....all of them have that same "Miami Vice" feel to em. Lots of neon and bright lights [Wink]

how about HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS? Cmon people, what a classic flick, it was a bigger movie for the box office than private school, monster squad, or any of the movies mentioned. I cant see why they havn't released the dvd version yet.

forgot to add this gem to the list, THE WIZARD, the video game movie with Fred Savage and Christian Slater. Another 80s classic that is begging to be released properly on dvd.

heres the IMDB link if you guys wanna check it out, or sign the petition for dvd release!

There are several that I would like to own that are not on DVD.

The Legend of Billie Jean
Twilight Zone the Movie
Gymkata
Monster Squad

I don't get why some rare movies are available, yet others that are more popular aren't. I mean, I have "Super Fuzz" on DVD, yet I can't find "The Legend of Billie Jean" on DVD?

Electric Dreams and a non 80s title, Sliver. They sure do move in mysterious ways.

It distinctly said "80s movies" at the beginning of the post, so "Sliver" doesn't count. [Wink] [Razz]

Sorry, that's just my 80s Avenger routine.

Anyway, I must say that I'm waiting for "Crossing Delancey" myself, as well as "Electric Dreams".

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

"Cross My Heart", "Resurrection", "Looker" and "8 Million Ways To Die" ("8 Million..." most definitely...I did the page on it) are high on my priority list as well.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

Cindy, I dug up another treasure just to see how much progress has been made after 2 1/2 years on all our dvd wishlists.....at least we got "Private School" and "Night of the Comet". The rest not so much.

Of course, my new thing is HD Blu-ray.....so this wanting more will probably never end. I'm still hoping I'll be around when they release the 3-D virtual reality movie experience.

I spoke to someone a while back who talked to the people who owned the rights to Fire with Fire. They said they NEVER have any intentions of releasing it on DVD. What a shame. One of my favs from the 80's. That was a while ago....hopefully they will change their mind.

Hardbodies is at the top of my list, along with Night of the Creeps.

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

xchazx, "Night of the Creeps" is a great addition to the list.

80'sRocked, there will be some sad folks on here if what you are saying about "Fire With Fire" holds true.

I've seen Monster Squad mentioned a few times.....this is out on DVD. Also, MotleyRulz mentioned "Moving"...I assume the one with Richard Pryor....I've seen this on DVD recently, though is on one of those double feature discs...can't remember the other movie it came with. I can never get anyone to get excited about the movie I want to see on DVD..."On The Right Track" with Gary Coleman...I loved this as a kid, so comes with lots of memories...I have a VHS copy, but waiting for DVD of course.

oh man, On the Right Track

No one as sad as me. [Frown] Like I said, it is one of my favs.

I love Fire with Fire too....what is weird is that Duncan Gibbins that directed it, actually did die in the California wild fires...isn't that strange that he died in a fire and his movie was titled "Fire with Fire."

I consider myself a huge 80's fan and have approx 150 80's titles on DVD, but have not seen a lot of the movies mentioned: Private School, Fire With Fire, Modern Girls, Where The Boys Are 84, Hardbodies, Endless Love, Night Of The comet, Electric Dreams, etc. I was born in 73' so at 10, 11, 12 years old may have been too young to see some of these? I'll write them down and try to check some of them out......

Jdoc, these are DVD-R tranfers right? Not official releases.

I already have Fire with Fire on DVD, burned it from VHS. I was just hoping it would come out as an official release.

kevdugp73, you have just struck 80's gold. I highly recommend "Night of the Comet", "Modern Girls", and "Hardbodies" from your list. Please let us know if you score any of these flicks anytime soon.

Will do Valley....I usually have pretty good luck finding what I'm looking for.....yard sales, flea markets, etc. I'm pretty sure there's not too many people looking for the movies that I am.....sometimes the movies have just been lying there forever, waiting for me to rescue them....I even bought a top loading VHS player to watch them on. Cheers!

80'sRocked,

You really need to email the webmaster to find out. Most are VHS transfers, but some are actually DVD releases that were never sold in the USA. [Cool]

I do understand some people do not want to by VHS transfers to DVD, and I appologize to those of you who don't like to see me post these sites, but, if the quality is equal to the original VHS, and, it's still not out on DVD, what's the difference? Some people don't own a VCR anymore and it's just more convenient this way. Like I said, I don't want to cause any strife about this. I just thought it might help somebody...

Another thing, keep an eye on the pay channels like Encore (4 of them) and MGMHD. They show lots of 80s movies that you can DVR and burn to DVD yourself. I hope this helps someone...

Motley, I just never pictured you as a Duckman. I will say that Lea Thompson was like totally 'Hot' in this movie though.
