I think is one of the most perfect 80's teen movies. Martha Coolidge is simply incredible. so many characters, subplots, so much detail.....favourite scenes anyone?

I haven't watched it in so long, and I never knew about it until just a few years ago, some one sent it to me and I really liked it, it was cool to see alot of the same people from Valley Girl in it. This one is one I should watch again soon.

The funniest parts I remember were with Colleen Camp...cause she was an undercover narcotics cop...going back to high school.

I love this movie too, it's kind of like a Valley Girl hangover. Christopher Lloyd is funny, and Michelle Meyrink looks great too. With what's out on DVD these days, i just shake my head that movies like this aren't yet on DVD.

I don't know guys, I bought this movie too and had such high aspirations for it because of Martha and the cast but I really didn't like it or should I say get it. It seemed like there was ALOT going on and too many characters. Maybe I should give it another try someday. Perhaps if it gets a DVD release...

Just watched Joy of Sex (1984)

It was a good movie.
The actors are good and it was nice to see Ernie Hudson once again.
Michelle Meyrink sure looks great.

Awesome to hear a band called Joey Harris and the Speedsters on the soundtrack.
They play a great song "You Never Call" at the christmas party.
Here´s the video:

The finnish cover art maybe gives a wrong kind of image,
because there´s really not much nudity in this flick.

I've always had a strange affinity for this movie too. It's a difficult film for me to recommend to people since from a completely objective standpoint I can see its failings, but I just really like it a lot none the less.

Ok gang i've always wanted to see this....Martha Coolidge...Michelle Meyrink (who I can't help but love!)Cameron Dye....and Colleen Camp is over the top haha
 -

Honest the poster doesn't do it justice!

 -

I loved every minute of it....it was a cute teen T&A comedy without the actual T&A.......lots of dildos though....."it's a curling iron" I loved her little sister.

Christopher Lloyd for being in it through the beginning was a great dad/coach!

Miss Post was so freaking cute with her sex ed tapes.....she was in Valley Girl and Real Genius all the Coolidge flicks.

I think because it had so many great actors I appreciate....it worked well for me......Cindy i'm actually going to give you the cold shoulder for a bit...."I really didn't like it?" "what???"

Why honestly isn't this movie better known?

In a way it is, for the wrong reasons, for it could well be described as the film that killed Belushi (assuming this is the same Joy of Sex mentioned in his recent biography), who was basically stonewalled into agreeing to do it a few months before his death by studio brass if he wanted them to pick up the film he wanted to do and had spent so much time rewriting prior. And thus, it's likely the depression from this rejection gave him the final push over the edge.

That and the chick who kept shooting him up so the cops could catch DeNiro and Williams at the same time as Belushi, but things went wrong.

Conspiracy theorist, moi?

Muffy, that poster you put up is another of those weird ones that pictures a girl that isn't actually in the movie. Why did they do that?

This is a really good movie actually - very entertaining. Colleen Camp, Michelle Meyrink, Cameron Dye, and Christopher Lloyd make for a perfect cast and do this movie well.

Pittman is a great character, a total clown. (same actor who plays Kent in Real Genius)

I also liked the exchange student, Farouk, who I thought was funny and well played.

My thoughts exactly. Interestingly enough, I just saw this bit of trivia on IMDB (of course it could be rubbish):

"Martha Coolidge had a dispute with the studio in the editing room. As a first-time filmmaker, she shot several scenes with gratuitous nudity, but chose to keep them out of the film during the cutting process. The studio disagreed and eventually fired her. Coolidge decided not to request an Alan Smithee credit, though she has said in interviews that she sometimes regrets that decision."

Good ol' behind the scenes drama.

ooooo interesting! You know she was right if this is true! It didn't need it.......I love the sceen shots you made Admirer....awesome!

You all should really try and hunt this down or add it to the good ol' wishlist but don't wait a few years like I did [Smile]

A good friend of mine worked with Martha Coolidge on "The Prince and Me." He's a storyboard artist/graphic designer, and she told him that she didn't know how to shoot an "action" scene--in this case, a riding lawnmower race--so he storyboarded it out for her, and it came off pretty well in the finished film, I thought. He thought that she was a pretty cool gal (who wouldn't want to hang around Martha Coolidge?), probably too nice to ask for the "Alan Smithee" credit on "The Joy of Sex," which ran many, many times on cable TV in the 90's. In spite of that, it's a movie about which I have only hazy recollections that it was dull and disorganized. I did always like Michelle Meyrink, though.

Some more Martha Coolidge trivia....Martha was the original director of Some Kind of Wonderful, but was fired at the last minute and replaced by Howard Deutch, who had previously directed Pretty in Pink. She cast Kyle MacLachlan as Hardy Jenns. How weird would that have turned out??

And continuing with the trivia, VS, Howard Deutch is married to Lea Thompson. I can't even imagine Kyle MacLachlan in that part. The only way that might've worked is if David Lynch would have directed. But then the film would've looked a whole lot different. LOL. Actually, I chuckle at that, but there were a lot of weird "what if's" in the 80's. Not to get off topic, but how many folks know that David Cronenberg was offered to direct "Flashdance"? Now that is really funny. (I'm guessing that he'd have had Jennifer Beals grow an extra appendage and pass on an STD to the other dancers.) Fortunately, he said that while he was flattered, it wasn't his type of film. Thank heavens! :-)

Back to Coolidge...I think that "The Joy of Sex" was just one of those troubled films that pops up every few years ("Jonah Hex" this year; "Supernova" in 2000; "The Fantasticks" in 1995; and "Casino Royale" in 1966, just to name a few) where little goes right, from your lead dying before shooting starts to extreme studio interference in the post-production. The more that I think about it, the more I applaud Coolidge for actually getting through the bad experience and going on to a productive career. How many promising indie filmmakers have been destroyed when the big break of a studio film came their way?

One more thing: Shouldn't the Director's Guild have a female version of "Alan Smithee," for example, "Alanna Smithee" or "Arlene Smithee"? [Wink]

i never heard of this movie, i don't think. but all i read was "cameron dye" and i was intrigued. [Big Grin]

with all of these valley girl actors, i have to see this. just added it to the wishlist on amazon. [Wink]

well, i watched it tonight. i thought it was ok. i appreciated seeing all the valley girl actors in it.

was it just me or did the backgrounds in leslie's house look the same as julie's house in valley girl?i am sure it was the director's doing. i loved that about the movie.

and i loved the song playing at the beginning of the movie... it reminded me the song "girls like me" by bonnie hayes in valley girl. i cannot find the name of the song or who sings it. it wasn't listed in the credits, i don't think?

Posted by Secret Admirer (Member # 3574) on :

Yeah, I don't know who sings that song and it's not listed in the credits or online that I can see. Maybe if I post the lyrics, someone will come along and help us out, Ronnie.

Some girls get all the action
They like to get around
They got a reputation

I'm on the outside
I hear the things they say
It's just conversation

I don't wanna talk about it
I don't wanna hear about it
I just wanna find out for myself

I want experience
I want experience
I want experience
I want experience

Most boys are telling stories
About the things they do
They want a reputation

Another notch on their belts tonight
That's all they're living for
It's just a frustration

I don't wanna talk about it
I don't wanna hear about it
I just wanna find out for myself

I want experience
I want experience
I want experience
I want experience
