As I stare down the barrel of 21 years old, I reflect on my days as a teenager, and I think of the movies I associate with teens.

Instead of the movies you would think ("American Pie" and the like), I'm thinking of the FUN teen movies.

What do I mean by that?

I mean "No dramatic subplots, just 90 minutes of sex jokes and T & A, with a couple of scenes of slapstick violence". That, to me, is a FUN teen movie.

I mean stuff like "Screwballs" and "Lovelines"...What happened to those kinds of movies?

Now every movie about teens has to have a message or some drama. Forget that...I quote Samantha Fox when I say "I Wanna Have Some Fun".

Can anybody here understand what I'm saying?

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...The Rock Steady Flamethrower

Wow, it's always nice to know there's someone else out there that appreciates "Screwballs". I'm with ya, I didn't care for American Pie or any of the other glom-on junk that followed it. Give me Screwballs or Private Resort with Johnny Depp, hell, throw in Private School and Joysticks as well.

I agree. There's a sort of campiness and unseriousness in those 80's movies that can't be seen today. It seems everyone has to be physically perfect to star in today's movies, their choice of clothes, style etc, done in great overkill. It's like Brian Wilson said "I just wasn't made for these times."

Know exactly what you're saying.
There are hardly any movies around anymore where you just sit back, have a good laugh and FEEL BETTER after having watched it, even if you were really down before, because suddenly the world seems not such a bad place afterall! I really miss that in many of today's movies.

I know, those are the kind of movies I love...just people having fun.. I love Hot Moves, Private School, Rich Girl, Hardbodies, Porky's, The Last American Virgin, Valley Girl, there were endless movies like all of those...I hated American Pie, that was stupid, and the teenagers are just not cutting it, they seem to pre made or something, not like real people. You don't see people in real houses, everyone has a billion dollars-and a professionally decorated perfect house, you don't see just average regular people. Like I love Roller Boogie, and I like when they have a rich girl/poor guy, cause I always think those make the best stories.

Hey John, you want a modern fun teen movie? If you haven't seen it yet, try Eight Days A Week from 1997. It's just been reeased on DVD as well, and has (a) no big stars, so no egos; (b) no real message; (c) plenty of sex jokes; (d) a fair amount of T&A; and certainly doesn't take itself too seriously, cos it was a pretty low budget affair. In fact, If it was made ten years before, it would have had Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald as the two leads.

*stands up*
hi, I'm The Wizard and I like FUN teen movies
*chrous of "hi Wizard"*

The few that I have which aren't mentioned here are: Fraternity Vacation, Mortuary Academy (Police Academy take-off), Recruits (another Police Academy take-off), Up The Military, Moving Violations & Elvira Mistress of the Dark. Films with no subtlety just simple plots that don't pretend to be anything but simple & fun. Oh almost forgot two more, They Call Me Bruce? & They Still Call Me Bruce, littered with really bad but really funny one-liners you won't have heard anywhere else, ever.

There are a lot of fun teen movies still being made out there. You're just too old now for teen movies now. That happens to everyone. Since you're not a kid anymore, you've gotten older so it's just naturally harder for you to see that.

It's all been done. The teen movies that are out now try to be like the ones from the 80s. Too bad they just can't. I still like "Not Another Teen Movie". Originally it was only gonna parody 90s teen movies(yawn)but the director decided to pay homage to the 80s and made fun of them too.

Unless your 80s fans like us, you can't really appreciate that movie.

I just find I can't really like or identify with today's teen stars. It seems that if you star in a movie and get popular, you automatically get Revlon endorsements and have a singing career. Would molly Ringwald have released an album if she came out today? There should be a disclaimer that music and acting don't go together. Where's the new crop of weird character actors like Crispin Glover? Maybe Hollywood movies shouldn't be where I am looking.

I have to say that I miss the teen movies also. I do think that as we get older our idea of what is funny stays the same but that the films are changing to much. I think it happens to us all. That is why I am so glad that there is a site dedicated to 80s films. For those of us who love to live in the past you cannot find a better place to do it. It is really fun to just look over all of the posts and think about a certain film maybe in a way that you hadn't before. Hail to the 80s you are the best!

Yesterday I watched 40 days and 40 nights (2002). While there were some funny moments, most of the actors and situations I couldn't relate to. It seemed the film wanted to try so hard to be hip and current, it couldn't focus on the characters. Each passing year, just when I think I couldn't love john Hughes films more, my appreciation grows even more.

I would have to say the best all time teen movie has to be Fat Times at Ridgemont High. I was only 11 years old when that movie came out! I will never forget the Phoebe Cates pool scene!

It is funny that none of the newer movies have that "warm fuzzy feeling" attached to them anymore. I have stopped going to the theatre and will go to Best Buy or ebay instead. I agree with Ali, my appreciation for John Hughes has grown leaps and bounds each time I sit back to watch. A good laugh, some major silliness and no real plot to speak of but yet there are plots buried in the different scenes(Waxing philosophical). I figure that everything is recycling. Movies, music. You know...I play enough music to be very incredibly bored with all of the newer music that is coming out because it is massively regurgitated and has no new creativity. hollywood is there now too. That is why there are sequels of 80's movies coming out soon.... [Mad]

Oh, to be creative and more exciting...hollywood is reworking itself to try to reclaim what it cannot. [Eek!]

naw...not that I've seen...the last hoorah of halfway decent teen movies went out in the 90's with films like:

Not Another Teen Movie
American Pie (first one only)
Can't Hardly Wait
Trojan War
Eight Days a Week
Road Trip
Mallrats

Haven't really seen any teen movied since those worth mentioning. And yes, I added the first American Pie movie...seems I might be one of few who considers that an honorable teen movie. While I do agree that American Pie is pretty much a blatant rip-off of 80's teen flicks...I still find the first one enjoyable. Mainly that's due to some great comedic acting and a few memorable characters. Characters like: Stiffler (the a$$hole jock), Michelle (the band geek), and most note-worthy performance...Noah Levenstein (the clueless naive father played brilliantly by Eugene Levy.)

So other than those movies and a few I may have forgotten...i have not seen any good ones since...would love to hear of any though.
