UK Movie magazine Empire has just released the results of it's readers poll for the Worst Accent in a Movie, and the results are as follows:

1. Sean Connery in The Untouchables (1987)
2. D1ck Van Dyke in Mary Poppins (1964)
3. Brad Pitt in Seven Year in Tibet (1997)
4. Charlton Heston in A Touch of Evil (1958)
5. Heather Graham in From Hell (2001)
6. Keanu Reeves in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
7. Julia Roberts in Mary Reilly (1996)
8. Laurence Olivier in The Jazz Singer (1980)
9. Pete Postlethwaite in The Usual Suspects (1995)
10. Meryl Streep in Out of Africa (1985)

Sean Connery is described as trying hard, but "whether he's a Russian sub captain (The Hunt for Red October) or even an English King (First Knight and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), always that baritone Highland burr remains."

Are there any other really bad accents that you've spotted in movies?

Wow, most of the actors on this list hail from America I see. I always notice American actors are not that believable as Brits or Scotts. I also notice that it's tough for British or Scottish actors to pull of an Authentic American accent (of any dialect). Like Orlando Bloom and Ewan McGregor in 'Black Hawk Down', I noticed they emphasized their r's a bit. I can't think of any terrible accents offhand except for Harrison Ford's horrible attempt at a Russian one in 'K-19: The Widowmaker. That was complete crap fromm a pretty good actor.

Surely Ewan McGreggor's Alec Guinness accent is pretty duff.

I'll think of more bad movie accents later. But one that recently comes to mind is the 1999 version of "Gloria", starring Sharon Stone. In that one, Sharon plays a woman on the run from the mob. But she is totally miscast in this movie.

Don't get me wrong. I like Sharon Stone, but her
attempt of a New York/Bronx accent is one of the worst I've seen and heard.

The film is a remake of a 1980 movie with the same title.

Sarah Holcombe in Caddyshack. Her accent is just horrendous in that movie. She did look pretty cute in Animal House though.

Some recent things include, Brian Cox, Scots actor who plays Williams Stryker in X men 2, SUCH a bad american accent.

and the guy that plays the vice president in "24" Season 2, hes an Ozzy actor who (peeps from the UK may know, classic 80's nostalgia) used to play Jim in the soap Neighbours, aahh the memories. Also a bad American accent.

You are probably right.

Unfortunately it didn't stop Michael Caine from trying to do one though.

How about Kevin Costner in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves?

Good call Riptide! In the movie Robin Hood: men In Tights, Cary Elwes makes a reference to this very thing. (my favorite quote in the movie), "Unlike some other Robin Hoods, i can speak w/ an English accent." classic!

Tootles! [Wink]
