I love american high school and college movies.Stuff from the 80's like Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller,Breakfast Club etc, but i like the more recent stuff too like She's All That,Never Been Kissed,Bring It On etc. So i was wondering which decades high school movies do you guy's out there think are best.Does anyone ever wish they could attend one of those schools? Cos i do! They look so much fun !!!!

Personally, I prefer movies of the 80's. Because of the superior soundtracks and the cooler clothing. But that's the opinion of an old fart I was about the same age as most of the actors/actresses when I first saw these movies. That might also influence my opinion.
Nevertheless, even now I'd rather see an 80's high school movie for the fifth time than picking a more recent one.

I prefer 80's, no contest. I avoid any teen movies made recently. When I watch recent teen movies, I feel like I'm losing brain cells. I never connect with any of he characthers (most of them are really shallow). For example, in the Breakfast Club I always loved "The basket case" because she was weird and quiet. But when people today, try and make an "outkast" kinda charachter, I NEVER connect with their characther. I just like 80's teen movies better, the humor does not consist of some idiot making fun of another idiot... And there are few teen stars today that I like. The "Young teen heart-throbs" yuck. They can't act, they just look pretty.

Yeah, 80s EVERYTHING rules. Today's movies, like everything else, are "dumbed down" for slackers. Shame.

they are progressively getting worse.
I always loved 80s teen films, even if some of depictions of teens were, let's say, unrealistic, but at least they were more pure than today's teen films. Which are cookie cutter at best.

looks like i set off some kind of debate about high school movies (80's vs 90's etc).thanx for all the responses you lot gave.i agree with everyones comments about 80's teen movies being the best.they do seem to have better characters in them.andrew mccarthy is possibly the best actor from these films,especially in pretty in pink & st elmos fire.i think the humour in 80's movies is more sarcastic than todays and i enjoy that sort of humour.but i do enjoy todays teen movies a lot.i just like the idea of high school movies ,they're just fun whatever decade they were made,even if they dont hold up against the 80's stuff.

Yea Im going to agree with you on this, I was born in the 80s and I can't compare the teen films of the 80's to the ones we have now. The new films are just horrible.

Let me add some reality to this discussion with a quote from "The Breakfast Club"---:
"The kids haven't changed, YOU have"
Most people here that rave of the 80's and put down the 90's and 00's think kids today have changed or are really different. Kids haven't changed, those guys that graduated high school in the 80's have changed. Hell even those of us that came out of high school in the 90's have changed. As you get older, it's inevitable that your peer group becomes more anal and uptight about everything.
Not every 80's movie was a wholesome film made by John Hughes or Amy Heckerling. The 1980's produced some real stink bomb teen movies. Most of them came out in the early and mid 80's and they were unbelievably sleazy and raunchy. The Last American Virgin anyone? How about My Tutor? The list is endless....

The three high-school movies that I felt the characters seemed the most real would have to be
"Over the Edge"--a 70's movie from the 70's. I know technically it was kids from Junior High in this movie but close enough
"The Breakfast Club"--an 80's movie that really didn't date itself. the only thing that says 80's about the movie is the soundtrack but it could have been set during any time period. thats what makes this movie an all time classic.
"Dazed and Confused"--a 90's movie set in the 70's. I met each and everyone of the characters in this movie. they were all very real and believable.
I agree with the poster who replied that the kids haven't changed but we are changing.

The last 2 members may have added reality to this discussion but i just have to say that not everyone has changed,it's not a requirement of life that you must lose your youthfulness and the spirit that goes with it.I havent lost mine and i know i never will.Fair enough school and college was'nt too long ago for me and i'm hoping university will happen for me later this year.But I believe we subconsiously make a choice to put our youthfull zest away,as though it is expected of us.We may get wiser,hell!we may even get older,but it does'nt mean we have to forget all the things that used to make us feel alive.Yes,new things will make us feel like that too,but the lucky ones among us will look upon new things as a kid would.And thats me! Some of you will probably think i'm stupid or just naive.But i promise you i'm not,this is just something i believe in and more importantly it's something i feel.And it feels good,it's not pretence, it's real and it's me.Theres always plenty of time for growing up!

I think just in terms of writing they've gone downhill. Our stuff was just hilarious and memorable. The stuff today, bland, forgettable characters, not to mention unfunny.
Or stuff that tries too hard, like the AM Pie movies or Old School, going the gross-out route too excessively.
Something like "Road Trip" gave me hope--the car exploding, the snake bite, to go along with the sperm donating stuff.
