the chorus goes..."if god was a man" etc etc, its goes with god in the chorus, help me please its very mellow n nice, it might not be in the 80's or early 90s..help!!!

It sounds kind of like a song from a singer named Joan Osborne called "One Of Us".
The song was from 1995. I remember I was a freshman in highschool and I had the cd single. Some of the lyrics were "If God had a name what would it be and would you call it to his face, if you were faced with him and all his glory what would you ask if you had just one question......."
.....is that the song you were looking for? The chorus goes "What if God was one of us, just a slob like one of us, just a stranger on the bus trying to make his way home...."
