Hello friends,

I'm currently compiling a playlist of some of the saddest songs of all time. I've done searches online for some of these, and have found some good ones. But I was curious what my fellow rewinder's opinions are of some of the saddest songs of all time. New Songs, old songs..doesn't matter to me.

Here's some examples of songs I have so far to give you an idea of what I'm going for:

The Cars - Drive
Suzanne Vega - Luka
Amy Grant - Breath of Heaven
Toni Braxton - Un-break my Heart
Alanis Morrisette - Uninvited
Talk Talk - Candy
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclispse of the Heart
Martika - Toy Soldiers
Pink Floyd - High Hopes
Roxette - It must have been Love
Air Supply - I'm all out of Love
Ultravox - Dancing with Tears in my Eyes
ABBA - The Winner takes it all
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
Evanescence - My Immortal
Dolly Parton - Me and Little Andy
George Michael - Careless Whisper
Guns N' Roses - November Rain
Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven

....(ect..ect...ect...)

...OK, yeah, I actually have quite a bit already...But I'm kinda addicted now and looking for more songs like these. So if any of you can suggest some sad songs that I can add to this list, I'd greatly appreciate it. Again, they can be from any era or any genre...just as long as they're sad and can perhaps summon up a tear or two, it's all good.

Thanks:)

Gloomy Sunday, by Billie Holliday. Lyrics below....

Sunday is gloomy,
My hours are slumberless
Dear as the shadows
I live with are numberless
Little white flowers
Will never awaken you
Not where the black culture's
Sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thoughts
Of ever returning you
Wouldn't they be angry
If I thought of joining you?

Gloomy Sunday,
with shadows I spend it all
My heart and I
Have decided to end it all
Soon there'll be candles
And prayers that I say I know
But let them not weep
Let them know
That I'm glad to go
For death is no dream
And in death I'm caressing you
With the last
Breath of my soul
I'll be blessing you

Dreaming, I was only dreaming
I awake and I find
You asleep in the deep of my heart
Deep

Darling I hope
That my dream never haunted you
My heart is telling you
How much I wanted you
Gloomy Sunday

go on.... beat that one!

Yesterday--The Beatles (Lennon, McCartney, depression...nuff said)
It's Over and Crying--Roy Orbison (the master of songs that tear your heart out and stamp on it.)
Walk on By--Dionne Warwick, Isaac Hayes, Diana Krall, etc. (the depressing Bacharach/David song, even depressing in a version with funky Isaac Hayes guitars)
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald--Gordon Lightfoot (A famous modern shipwreck, they all die. It doesn't get any sadder than that.)
Without You--Nilsson (By the end of it, you want to kill yourself along with Harry Nilsson.)
Feelings--Morris Albert (Yes, it's a punchline to "name a bad song"--and almost a cliche--but try listening to it if you are feeling anything less than great. It's guaranteed to wreck your day.)
If Loving You is Wrong (I Don't Want to Be Right)--Luther Ingram and others (a depressing song for adulterers everywhere)
At this Moment--Billy Vera and Beaters (the classic tear-in-your beer jukebox song)
This Woman's Work--Kate Bush (forever linked to that unforgettable scene in "She's Having a Baby")
Cry--Godley and Creme (great sad video too)
Reflections--Diana Ross and the Supremes (so depressing it was used as the credits music for the show "China Beach," a depressing show about the Vietnam War)
Creep--Radiohead (so depressing BBC Radio wouldn't play it)
Two Out of Three Ain't Bad--Meatloaf ("I want you. I need you. But there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you...don't be sad." Heck, I'm sad just typing that.)
Knocking on Heaven's Door--Bob Dylan (another song forever mated to a movie--and a death scene--"Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.")
The Thrill is Gone--B.B. King ("And now that it's over, all I can do is wish you well." Just killer.)
Love is a Losing Game--Amy Winehouse (and life was a losing game for her)

Great thread!

Devolution here,

How Dare We Mention

"At This Moment" without the only significance to the 80's that it has.

It was Alex P. Keaton and Ellen's song on Family Ties.

When they broke up they must have played the song a billion times.

I have always thought this was a sad song. My best friend committed suicide in 2003 and I had to pick two songs to play at his funeral. This was one of them. Now it is a truly sad song but I think you will agree it is very sad song anyway.

Hunters and Collectors - "True Tears of Joy."

Without you by Nilsson immediately popped into my head, along with All By Myself by Eric Carmen. I hate the re-makes.

These may be more "sad happy", depending on how you interpret the song....but sure to bring up a tear if the moment hits ya!

1. My wife does picture compilations with songs, usually for new born babies or toddlers. Watch the pics while hearing "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flak....turned up loud.....tears every time!

2. Don't Know What Ya got...Til It's Gone" by cinderella

3. "In The Arms Of Angels" by Sarah McLauchlan

A personal fave of mine but not well known and massively underrated:

"I wish it would rain down" - Phil Collins

Must have listened to this 100 times the day I left my home town, family and (soon to be) ex girlfriend to begin my Army career.

What about me? It isn't fair
I've had enough, now I want my share
Can't you see, I wanna live
You just take more than you give

A classic Australian song, probably more known now by the newer generation for being the biggest hit for the first Australian Idol runnerup, Shannon Noll. The strength of his performance singing this in the early rounds of Idol saw him right through to the finale.

Heard one that I hadn't heard in a very long time..

Escape Club - "I'll Be There"

Always liked it. (More known for their other big tune, "Wild Wild West")

"Don't be afraid, oh my love
I'll be watching you from above
And I'd give all the world tonight,
To be with you
Because I'm on your side,
And I still care
I may have died,
But I've gone nowhere

Just think of me,
And I'll be there"

Escape Club - "I'll Be There"
I used to work with a guy that joined Escape Club for a tour (as a backup / session musician) just as 'Wild Wild West' was released. He had some stories...

Janis Ian - 'At Seventeen'

Ricky Lee Jones - 'On Saturday Afternoons in 1963'

'Maybe' from Annie.

'Ordinary Fool' from Bugsy Malone.

Half of The Carpenters back catalogue.

And a million others...
