they still have these?...

I haven't watched in years

Loved the used of "Back To The Future" in the opening with the Twin Pines Mall, the DeLorean, Doc Brown, and Marty!

Also, seeing Robert Downey Jr. on the red carpet made me want to watch "Tuff Turf"..

Valley, my friend, for my The Rewind, I'm prepared to go that extra mile... I'll give it my best shot but I know I'll be shattered for work the next day; so here are my predictions in case I don't make it all the way to the end...

My (imaginary) monies on Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Christian Bale, Hailee Stansfield for the acting gongs.

Outside The Law for best foreign film (was also in my top 10 films of 2010 list)

Black Swan and Arronofsky for best picture and director.

Winter's Bone for best-adapted screenplay.

The King’s Speech for best original screenplay.

Toy Story 3 best animated.

Inside Job best documentary.

Black Swan for editing.

The Wolfman for best makeup.

We Belong Together (Randy Newman) best song Toy Story 3.

Sound and Effects awards for Inception.

Wally Pfister's living the dream (see what I did there?) and takes best cinematography for Inception. Deserved IMO.

 -

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Awesome .. Toy Story 3-D is a winner!

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

Coming out of the corner with a devastating one two combination is Melissa Leo, who earns a best supporting actress gong for The Fighter. I don't know much about her to be honest, but lets hope this raises her profile...She said a bad word on stage... ("****ing...", in case you're wondering) and was in an episode of Miami Vice once. I like her already!

 -
She's the one on the left...

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

Toy Story 3, an easy win. Deserved.
 -

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

Aaron Sorkin gets best screenplay for The Facebook movie. Meh!

 -

David Seidler snags best adapted for The King's Speech, he's 74 years old you know. Well done granddad!

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

In a Better World (a.k.a. Civilization a.k.a Heaven), best foreign film...haven't seen it myself. Couldn't have been better than Outside The Law, though.

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

Christian Bale, best supporting for The Fighter.

Great actor, they'll be celebrating in Wales tonight...forget the fact that he hasn't been back in a lifetime: Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins, Joe Calzage, Catherine Zeta Jones, Tom Jones, Kelly Jones, Grace Jones, Indiana Jones: all Welsh, top that England!

Christian Bale ought to have said: "The Machinist, American Psycho, Harsh Times, Empire of the Sun whilst revising for my O-Levels...and you give me this trinket for out-acting Marky ****ing Mark? Shame on you gutless pricks, shame on you all...I'm Batman".

Alas, Bale didn't use the speech I'd written for him, and went for the old false modesty routine instead...

The Social Network wins best score. Fair enough, I suppose.

Inception snares another tech win as expected, this time for sound editing.

Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman are getting on my **** now, the whole song n' dance theme is beginning to grate. James Franco and Anne Hathaway aren't doing a bad job of steering this titanic show towards the iceberg of nonsensical banality.

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Rick Baker wins for make-up.. think The Howling, An American Werewolf in London, and Coming To America.

Posted by Veronica Sawyer (Member # 2221) on :

I loved that Reese Witherspoon presented Christian Bale with his Oscar - an American Psycho reunion! [Smile]

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

The legend Rick Baker devours best make-up for The Wolfman!

 -

Yeah, I really like the way they've used a subtle foundation and high impact mascara here, it really brings out th...hold on a second, it's my PA...what do ya mean its not that kind of award?

 -

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

Musical interlude, Mandy Moores looking good.

So far I've got 6 predictions right, only best foreign and supporting actress threw a spanner in the works.

Oscars for short and documentary short, best of luck to the winners but its always awkward to seek these movies out.

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

Director Charles Ferguson makes good on my prediction and wins for Inside Job. Very good documentary on financial fraud and ongoing corruption. See it.

 -

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

Boring nepotist has been; the gorgeous Gwyneth Paltrow croons for us.

Randy Newman wins best song!

Inception takes another, this time for best SFX.

Surprisingly, Social Network gets one for best editing? That should've gone to Black Swan IMO, that's probably being preped for later.

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

Tom Hooper wins Best director for The King's Speech...OK, looks like Black Swans a cert for best picture, then.

Directors a toff, and had to take the silver spoon out of his mouth before making that speech. Seems like a reasonably nice chap, though.

Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :

Natalie Portman for Black Swan...the Black Swan bandwagon starts here, jump on it while you have the chance. Natalie Portman's rambling speech was nice to hear, though how she forgot to thank George Lucas is beyond me!

I'm signing off for tonight, the rest is obvious.

I enjoyed watching Franco getting more and more stoned as it went on -

no mention of corey haim in the memoriam.....

i thought the show was drab. the hosts were boring and some of the acceptance speeches were awkward. melissa leo was annoying..it felt like she was on the stage forever and they 'let' her continue. [Roll Eyes]

the ending was cute though.

i was glad Inception went home with a good handful of awards. but shocked it didn't win best score.

natalie portman was so busy thanking everyone she could think of, she made no mention of her co-stars haha. but definitely not as bad as christian bale forgetting his wife's name! [Eek!]

From fame to shame...
Seriously, this is shocking!
Yet another reason why i don´t watch these shows.

And Feldman goes mad

Posted by Devolution (Member # 1731) on :

Devolution here,

Staten Island represent! I teach some of the brothers and sisters of those kids that sang over the rainbow. Then yesterday the sang on Oprah. Talk about life being awesome, she gave them all laptops.

Good stuff.

We are DEVO

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Devo.. that performance by your students younger siblings was probably the highlight of the show. And the laptops from Oprah is icing on the cake.

Ronnie & aTomiK.. I totally thought about Corey Haim during the segment, but just thought that maybe his tribute had been in the previous year. That statement by The Academy was a joke.. Corey Haim was a popular child/teen star and for them to leave him out of the segment is a major omission in my opinion. I usually think Corey Feldman is too abrasive, but I actually support him on this instance.

Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :

wow. i completely agree with feldman. i'm not really a fan of haim but i definitely think the academy's statement was crappy. screw them.

Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :

I only watched bits and pieces of the Oscars. It is not worth it forme to sit through 3 plus hours of boredom. I heard that everyone hated Anne Hathaway and James Franco as hosts (they were too stiff, too boring etc.) but I told my husband- I don't care who is hosting. It is ALWAYS boring. Billy Crystal was good for the first 5-10 minutes with his act, then the rest of it would be BORING!
Also, can anyone tell me if this is true? Oprah aka The Queen aka The Vice Pres. presented an award and she would not move out of the way for the recipient to get their statue? The recip. had to walk around Her Highness and reach backwards to retrieve their statue?!

Never watch award shows, the make me dry heeve!

Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :

Also, a "yay" from me for the nominations for Winter's Bone. It was a really good low budget indie flick. Really sad. The acting was excellent though. I hope that means that newcomer Jennifer Lawrence gets some more work. And John Hawkes deserved the nom for Best Supporting actor.
BTW, Melissa Leo was in an indie flick last year or 2009 called Frozen River. It was pretty good-if you like those sort of movies you may want to check it out.

Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :

JayLee, I feel the same way, lol!

Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :

i like watching the oscars...and all other awards shows. they aren't always as boring as this year's was. but franco and hathaway were not good. oh well, it happens.

pitts, oprah was standing in the way, but i just took it as, she didn't think to move over.. but she eventually did and i don't recall her not handing over the award.

i am very interested in winter's bone. jennifer lawrence looked beautiful at the show.

Posted by Helen_S (Member # 5804) on :

Franco fully entertained me [Razz] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3x5VzdfN0I

I used to be like Jay, but I've stayed up till nearly 5am and watched the last 2 years.

Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :

You know what's funny is the only Oscar movie I saw this year was Winter's Bone, because I grew up near the Ozarks, it was so boring for me I couldn't watch all of it.......I tried.....it's very indie.......but i'm an awful judge I can't sit through new movies much anymore [Smile]

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :

Once again, the Oscars came, were terrible, and are gone for another year. My favorite comment by someone on-line was that Jame Franco looked like that lacrosse player with heavy lids and a smirk that you wished your daughter wouldn't spend so much time with, and Anne Hathaway was like a brain dead cheerleader "who-hooing" every presenter and in general acting like she was hosting Saturday Night Live. [Smile]

Posted by Helen_S (Member # 5804) on :

What a smirk [Smile]

Melissa Leo's "oops" was so bad [Smile]

Hey.. I thought Bob Hope was hilarious though. I think we should do an entire Oscars broadcast that way.. with celebrities from the past as presenters.

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :

Did they find SCTV's Dave Thomas to mimic Hope's voice? His impression of Hope was always spot on. [Smile]

Not to trample on legends, but I knew a musician who played with Bob Hope and didn't like him much at all. He said that he was the cheapest man alive and would never pay a restaurant bill. His attitude was "Your payment is the privilege you had in serving me, the great Bob Hope."

valley, i would love to see more highlight moments from previous oscar shows. the academy awards have been around 80+ years! to think about all the footage we could see, it's a great idea. [Smile]

Peter Graves ("Airplane!" movie) wasn't mentioned in the "In Memoriam" segment either. Or maybe it's because he's better known as a TV actor ("Mission: Impossible") than for his movie roles.
