I want to make sure everyone is aware of the new tv show on TBS called "Glory Daze". It premieres on November 16th at 10pm EST..

The premise of show deals with four college buddies in the 80's. I have no idea if it will be any good since they didn't ask for our input, but let's all support it starting out. I'd love to see more movies and tv shows that give the 80's a proper treatment.

Anyone else interested?

I'll check it out.....but i'm gonna have my tough criteria going into it......I get so dissapointed in new shows trying to do the 80's thing....I really did love Do Over though..........hmmmmm the picture above doesn't scream 80's? if I were looking at that and no text I wouldn't know thats what they were doing? you know???

Muffy.. my thoughts exactly.. the hairstyles and clothes in those photos just don't seem very 80's. I've seen the previews today and I will say that they do have a few good 80's tunes at least.

They need to watch "Hot Tub Time Machine" to get that true 80's style done in a newer movie ... or even better.. pay a visit to the Rewind. Where's the NEON??

I know! and i'm really trying not to be too negative....honest! I liked Hot Tub Time Machine but I didn't walk away loving it and feeling i'd ever need to watch it again...but your right they did a good effort at the style and poking fun at it [Big Grin]

I actually quite enjoyed Hot Tub Time Machine.. my only compliant was the gross out factor that is present in today's movies .. must appeal to today's generation .. for me it took away from what was kind of a funny story.

But like you.. I have no plans to purchase the dvd. I will watch it again on the movie channels if it is on though.

Hadn't heard of this until now...I'll certainly give it a shot...I mean...I even liked watching "That 80's Show"...it can't be worse than that! I hope they "REWIND" far enough...I'm not interested in seeing anyone re-live 1987-89'. Stick in some good 80's music, add a good helping of 80's references (careful not to overdo it though), and they might make something out of it. I agree re the above picture not being 80's enough, but hopefully it was just a bad stylist choice for this one picture. I hope they make some informed choices, and too bad they couldn't add some "gritty" to the filming to make it more nostalgic..

Kev.. it is set in 1986

I hadn't heard anything about this show. That tells me that TBS is really promoting it, not. I just hope it's not over-the-top making fun of the 80's, or else the opposite where they are wearing clothing and hairstyles from 2010 yet pretending to be 80's styled. I thought one of the worst representations of the 80's was Adventureland. They all were dressed and styled for the 2000's, yet it was supposed to be set in the 80's.

Hmmmmm...not quite far enough for me Valley, but again, I'll still certainly give it a try.

This show starts next Tuesday. Anybody going to watch?

Watching this right now....has already referenced Long duk dong and Patrick bateman from American psycho. One of the girls in it reminds me of jenny wright. Lots and lots of awesome 80's songs....

I hope they didn't reference AP directly. It didn't come out until the 90's.

Logan the book came out in the 80's right?

Posted by Veronica Sawyer (Member # 2221) on :

No, it was a reference to the movie. The part where Bateman is pointing and winking at himself in the mirror. Maybe the actor was just ad-libbing and snuck that part in? Or maybe it's just a coincidence. Don't know.

I thought is was a great first show.. the tunes were incredible! They did a decent job of giving it an 80's feel.

i had been waiting for this show to come out. had almost forgotten it was going to be on tuesday, until i saw this topic.
it thought it was cool, had some great, funny moments. i died laughing when they asian guy went into the asian fraternity house!!!!! [Big Grin]

i agree valley, the tunes were awesomely well-placed.

moving in stereo
doot doot
bette davis eyes
da da da

..and so many more. glad they played a lot of music.

i was very skeptical of this one, but hope it gets better and better. [Smile]
can't wait for next week's episode!

Ronnie.. what I enjoyed was the fact that they didn't just play basic overplayed 80's tunes. The thought process behind the tunes was well conceived.

90's I believe. I could be wrong.

2nd episode is tonight.. TBS 10pm EST

Ronnie.. I just thought of this, Richard Blade played the dj at the beginning of the show. Maybe he was a mjor influence on the use of wicked tunes like:

"Make A Circuit With Me"

"Save It For Later"

"Da Da Da"

"It Must Be Love"

& "Doot-Doot"

Plus a few more gems. Great launching of the show music wise.

Anyone still watching this show? I'm actually enjoying it and while it doesn't totally capture the 80's feel.. it tries very hard. Liked the match date party ..

And you had to love the title.. "Hungry Like A Teen Wolf"

I watched what I thought was the first episode on Ondemand this morning. I've been waiting for what, two weeks for them to put it up. but I don't think it was even the first episode that they put up! I don't remember any of the above stuff that you all were talking about (AP reference, Asian guy, etc.). In this episode, which they numbered as the first one, the pledges had to find a certain brand of beer for the stoner guy Stankowsky. I will say the show is alright, but I feel as though it could be set during the 2000's. The guys are dressed in 80'sstyle clothes. I noticed that they are wearing fitted polo shirts, not the huge baggy ones with the sleeve below the elbow like most fools wear today. The girls were kinda "meh" as far as 80's clothing and hairstyles. Especially the hair- not one of the younger girls even made me think "80's". The only one whose hair and clothes definitely looked 80's was Teri Polo. I loved the aerobics class scene!

Well I just checked the episode list on imdb, and that was the second episode: Fake Me Home Tonight. I hope they put the pilot up on ONdemand soon.

Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :

well i am loving the show, and it's feeling very 80s to me...well, as close as they can get on a tv show in 2010/2011. not bad, i'd say!!

the tunes are well placed, the backgrounds are great, the clothing is good... i agree the girls weren't getting the look, but they have managed to do better, especially in the last episode, which was the 3rd one.

and i the matched party was great. loved the teen wolf costume! [Smile]

I watched the second episode "Hungry Like Teen Wolf" last night. It was really good. I thought it was better than the first one I watched (they still have not put up the Pilot on Ondemand!). It brought back great memories of my college days and when my boyfriend was pledging his fraternity. I also liked the music and the party theme. We used to have a "Nuts and Bolts" party at his frat.

This week's show was awesome by bringing in Dad's from 80's past. My fav character was Curtis Armstong as Mitch was it?

Enjoyed hearing "Mad World" by Tears For Fears at the end too.

Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :

yes valley! i loved the dads coming around, and was pleasantly surprised to hear booger was going to be on the show. [Big Grin] i just knew who's father he was going to play too...
do you happen to know who the guy was playing the military dad? i know i have seen him in other movies but couldn't remember.

i also loved the use of mad world at the end. i'm telling you, they are rocking my world with the song choices. [Smile]

i really hope this show makes it. i don't know anyone other than here, who watches this show. but seeing as how it's right before conan, i would hope people end up watching?

is there a new episode tonight? i can't remember. i'll still set the dvr to record, just in case. [Wink]

hope you guys are still watching!

Did you see that Gina Gershon is going to be on "Glory Daze" next Tuesday in what appears to be a "Top Gun" tribute type show? They got the wrong Cruise movie for Gershon, but she should make it quite entertaining.

I wish they would have expanded on Teri Polo's character ..

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Shockingly .. it sounds like Ronnie & Pittsburghgirl are the folks watching "Glory Daze" with me. But Muffy has asked which episode do we recommend for her to watch to give it a chance.

I totally think she should watch the pilot episode because it sets the tone with the incredible tunes, but after that I recommended the episode where their Dads visit.

The last episode with Gina Gershon and the Top Gun tribute was beyond cheesy, but the relationship between Joel and Christie is keeping me involved. Plus, cheesy is fun sometimes.

Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :

I haven't seen the Gina Gershon episode yet- still waiting for it on Ondemand. And they never did put up the Pilot, which was so disappointing, seeing as there were so many great references that you guys said, plus the music. I liked the Dads episode the best too.

i have to catch up on the last 2 episodes. i hope to get that done this weekend.

i am surprised that the show kept going with new episodes throughout the holidays. i for sure thought they would skip christmas week, but no... ha!

Wow, that Gina Girshon/Top Gun episode was definitely over-the-top! But I still enjoyed it. It brought back more memories- my boyfriend's frat ran out of places in town to have our formals, so for the 25th anniversary formal, we had to have it at a place an hour away.

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Did either of you notice that the last episode was directed by Jerry Levine (Stiles from Teen Wolf)?

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

This week's episode was one of my favs.. thought it had the best 80's style yet. Enjoyed the sorority house raid, Boston in the '86 world series, and the final scene with the Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now" playing.

For Muffy and Pittsburghgirl who have yet to the see the pilot for "Glory Daze" .. this is a little sneak peek at it:

Glory Daze

Muffy, don't bother watching the episode titled "Shamrock You Like a Hurricane". It is so stupid, I can't believe I continued to sit and watch it waiting for something to happen other than the stupidity that was going onscreen. I do love the titles of each episode though.

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

I agree that "Shamrock You Like a Hurricane" was probably my least fav to this point.

I finally watched the season finale. I almost spit out my tea laughing when I saw Stankowski's pony tail at the end! Lmao!

It is official- no more Glory Daze

That is sad, but not totally surprising news. I was really hoping for a second season so that "Glory Daze" could continue to find its groove.. but the rates just weren't there apparently.

Pittsburgh.. thanks for posting this info.. it will keep me from searching for it on my DVR.

i knew it... dang it.

i really liked the main guys.. the 4 friends.

well, it was a good attempt.

Bummer, man. And I always wanted to catch an episode of this but never had the time (college classes and other general life commitments got in the way). Judging from the previews I saw, Glory Daze did look like a fun '80s flashback show.

Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :

Just to clarify...was that a total of 10 episodes? Wow...if they combine these episodes with the 14 episodes of That 80's Show...that's a box set waiting to happen!

Haven't seen any Glory Daze episodes yet, but have them at my dispossel...will try to watch them soon.....

Too bad it didn't work out. I alos did like That 80's Show...but have a feeling I'm in the minority here....

Sorry guys...just catching up...and obviously too late re the cancellation. I've watced episodes 1-6 and can't wait to watch the other four. Very bummed that the series is cancelled....I'm really enjoying it. Do you think advertising had anything to do with it...I had never heard of it, nor have I yet to seen one ad to plug the show???

Ronnie...answering an early question of yours, I believe the sergent Dad was the Dad from "That 80's Show"....another show that flopped after 14 episodes.

Kinda glad I wasn't watching as the new episodes came out...I would be even more disappointed about the cancellation....

I haven't much cared for the first 2 episodes [Frown]

I figured as much since Ralph Macchio isn't in it. [Big Grin]
