I recently discovered the benefits of drawing on the computer (no more tossing away paper, huge expences on paint, canvas and so on) and wanted to share it with the only guys I know who appreciate the 80's.
Basically the whole idea is to trace the original picture and then simplify it. Though it has to stay recognizable of course.
Why simplify it? Well, mainly because I'm just not as talented as some of the speedpainters like you can find on YouTube.

As I'm still in the learning process, I realise there's plenty of room for improvement. But feel free to let me know what you think.

Cheers!

TKO these are awesome!! keep it up and show us.......they are identical to your hand drawings!!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. [Smile]

Atomik, you're absolutely right - the beard on Don is a bit too much.

Kevdug, thanks... though for some reason I can't find the spirit to finish it.

EJ, I use Inkscape. It's an open source program similar to illustrator. You can download it here.
If you can find the time (I know exactly what you mean) it's definitely worth checking out. It also provides lots of tutorials.

Sure will do Muffy. [Smile] I was thinking of maybe trying to do one in honor of Corey Haim. We'll see...
The hand drawings were slightly different, but the goal is the same: creating a collage with as many 80's icons I can come up with.

Please feel free to post as many of your own work as you like. In fact (if you want), "I'll give you a whole drawer" haha. [Big Grin]

BTW Awesome work Muffy and indeed very Patrick Nagel-like. An artist I admire very much. Even the use of colours reminds me of his work.

Posted by TKO (Member # 1471) on :

Thanks for the effort Muffy, but the pictures need to be a whole lot bigger, because I need to trace them.

Maybe I can try to draw a portrait first and then scan and trace the (bigger) drawing. It'll take much more time, but I think that will work.

Thanks TKO that means alot coming from you....whos work I admire!

I'll keep hunting for a good Valley Girl pic for the boys.

I could be wrong, but isn't this popular 80's poster based on Edward Hopper's work?
Bogart, Presley, Monroe and Dean all hanging at te bar...

You're very welcome my friend. I'm flattered. Actually the framed one was meant as a joke. If you like I'll make you a copy that fits your computer screen (so far they're not copyrighted yet [Wink] ). I can even still change the background colour if you like.

TKO awesome work! I love Jamie Gertz. Your shading on this one is so spot on.....even her lips just make her that more dimensional love it!

Posted by TKO (Member # 1471) on :

Thanks guys.

Here's another one I made today.
Unfortunately it didn't work out the way I hoped. It wasn't the best picture to work with.

But here goes anyway... the late Corey Haim (RIP)
