for those that have a large dvd collection...

which do you do...keep your dvds stacked and displayed in their original cases, or take out the discs and use dvd sleeves to store in those big 3 ring binders?

i'm torn on what to do. if i display my dvds, it would take up a ton of space but then again, it just looks neat to me.
i bought a bunch of dvd sleeves where you can put in the disc on one side and the insert on the opposite side.

so original casing or filed?

I just cleaned up my stoarge unit and I am hellbent on keeping them in their original boxes. In fact when I dub a movie off tv or something and now all I have is the DVD in my hand I feel a little "cheated", which is why I usually end up getting the DVD anyway, even if Ive managed to burn a copy!

For me its original casing. And they ALL have to be in alphabetical order with their titles facing out so I know where it is when I want it!

Original all the way!
Just like mamamia, itīs not right if itīs copied.
I just have to feel the case (or the vhs box) in my hands.
I have a new rule now, original or nothing at all.
But thatīs just me, everyone has their own way.

Ronnie, I am not a huge dvd collector, but I do keep mine in their original cases. However, I am running out of room and have some dvd's and vhs stored in wicker baskets. I need to go out and buy a new entertainment unit or shelving unit to make more room. If you're limited on room for them, may I suggest you put them in those binders and just put the covers/packages in a plastic under-the-bed storage box.

Original casing and alphabetized here too. There's just something about using dvd sleeves that makes it feel like a copy to me personally lol. I buy all blu-ray now unless it's a really good deal on something I can't pass up. A little over 900 total and counting!

I keep mine in the original case too. I did buy a big zippered case to put all of the DVDs in so I could store the cases.... I just haven't done it yet... Maybe I don't want to... Hmmmm.... [Wink]

I keep them all in the original cases too. I put all my CD's in Case Logic binders, but there's just no way I could do that with my movies. I enjoy looking at the box art way too much. So I bought a few of these shelving units to store them all on:

Looks like I'm in the minority here. I own several thousand DVD's and just do not have the space to keep them in their original boxes, so its DVD ring binders for me. All of my boxes are stored in the garage for the day I win the lottery and own a house with a DVD Library room in it.

Collectible Noms [Cool]

I'm kinda split both ways on this one. I have a reasonable collection I guess (around 500) and about half are out on shelves in the original casing. But I also have a couple of big ring binders full of discs which I either didn't get in big cases or are copies I was given.

Lots of these are 'freebie' dvds which I got from newspaper or magazine promotions, and keeping a pile of dvds on a shelf in little cardboard sleeves looks untidy.

A friend of mine has close on 4000 dvds, and has them in indexed binders simply because he hasn't got the space to store them all out in their cases. He has the cases and sleeves stored in his basement, so that he COULD display stuff if he wants.

As for the display order, I'd always go with autobiographical. As Rob Gordon said (and I paraphrase) "If I wanted to watch SpaceHunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone, I'd have to remember that I bought it for a friend in the summer of 93, but then didn't give it to them for personal reasons..."

Original boxes! That's part of being a collector!

If I run out of space, then i'll have to move!

same deal with my video games. Use be the same with cd's. But when music downloading came about, that kinda went away.

Im pretty pscho about my CDs and video games too. But like JAY LEE said- theres a little elbow room with the ones Ive mixed and burned myself- although they ARE usually numbered(!) Its a disease of the mind - I know.

Im glad other people alphabetize too cuz a lot of people make fun of me but one day my daughter had friends over and at the last minute one kid asked me if they could borrow season one of FUTURAMA and I was like "Just grab it". A few weeks later I went to get something out of the unit and there was a SPACE (duh duh duhhh!) Because they're in A-Z order it only took me a few seconds to realize what was missing.

And God forbid anyone mixes em up just to **** with me!

I've ripped all my CD's/DVD's/Blu-ray's to a NAS Server, which is connected to a HTPC in the living room.

All the cases are kept in a load of boxes under the stairs. [Eek!] [Big Grin]

I'm all about the cases...and...am quickly running out of room. I'd guess I've got a collection of about 600-700 DVDs, but they're stored in four different spots: my 80's movies (approx 300) are on a small book shelf in my closet, my horror, westerns, and classics (anything pre 1980) are in our linen closet (approx 200), all my TV sets and collections are in a vintage bookshelf, and everything else (1990 and above) is stored under our TV in a stand. I got rid of almost all of my VHS for obvious reasons....no room.

Cases. Stored A-Z.

I organize using an intuitive, genre system. So if you're looking for an '80s teen comedy you'll find them all grouped together. And all the John Hughes or Martha Coolidge '80s teen comedies would be grouped together within that group. The thing I hate about alphabetizing is that someone has to know exactly which title they are after or else scan the entire collection looking for choices. Plus it's a pain every time you get a new addition and have to respace everything.

All in their cases. I have around 700 and store them in big see through boxes. Have 4 for horror, 1 for gangster and the like, 2 for everything else.

I'm like Journey on this one.....by genres, though I have been getting sloppy(and lazy)lately and just throwing them anywhere....need to re-organize them. It is a big pain in the butt when I get a new one and have to move around the whole lot! All cases for me too. It's cool for me to look at the ever growing display....

Me too, genres, by order of year! Sectioned into decades!

Maaaan, we're a bunch of ****ing geeks [Smile]

thanks to everyone for the replies.

my husband keeps his movies in a couple of thick binders..in no order and it drives me nuts haha. but we have been rearranging things and my movies have been stored in these huge bins and it got annoying looking through everything whenever i wanted to see a movie. looking for 1 dvd in a bin of a hundred, got aggravating.
i thought about filing my movies but figured i would ask you all what you do with yours. and i imagined that most of you had your's displayed, in order. [Wink]

i just made him purchase a big, tall book shelf for me and i am going to arrange everything alphabetically in our art room.

as for copied dvds, i am not a big fan of those. i think i own 3 at most. but even those, i have cases for.
so i guess i will use the inserts i bought, for my cd backups!

thanks you guys! [Smile]

I have somewhere between 15,000-20,000 dvds of wrestling, movies, kids movies, music videos, etc... I used to print out covers for all the my movies and wrestling discs but once you go over a certain amount that becomes impossible so now I use binders and plastic bins for anything new.

My wrestling discs are by promotion & by date while everything else is in alphabetical order.

Alphabetical, original case, shelf: No space left.

I've always kept my DVDs in their original cases. Below is my main storage fixture, but I have an armoire that contains my lesser viewed movies.

My organizational strategy is a bit different and keeps evolving with the times...

Top Shelf - movie soundtrack CDs

2nd Shelf - Blu-rays, HD-DVDs, PS3 games (A to Z)

3rd & 4th Shelf - 80's movies (A to Z)

5th - Fav non-80's movies (A to Z)

 -

The rest of my movies are in the armoire I mentioned.
