No midnight showing here I guess we'll go sometime Friday.......

First airing here was 11.45 this morning, but we didn't go until the 6.45 session.

I loved it.

My one problem with it is that the Vulcan sky was blue, when it should have been red, but that's the nerd in me coming out.

Also, I can't believe that Darth Vader is Kirk's father! OMG!!

I have never seen any Star Trek shows or antything...sorry I lived a shletered life. A friend of a friend worked on some of the CGI for the movie so I want to go see it for that. You never know, maybe this could be a jumping off point for me.

I saw a special screening of 'Star Trek' Sunday night. The event was for Budweiser employees(I'm not one myself). All the scenes that take place in the belly of 'U.S.S. Enterprise' were actually shot in the Los Angeles brewery.

It had a great story, pace, and execution.

Fightertown, does that mean that those water tubes normally carry beer?

I caught it yesterday and enjoyed it also. I had a few quibbles, but nothing that really ruined the movie for me. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto did commendable jobs channeling their respective predecessors, without ever devolving into cheap impersonations. Leonard Nimoy and Bruce Greenwood were fantastic as always too. The only person that seemed grossly out of place was Winona Ryder. She fits into the Trek universe about as well as she did the Alien universe. Fortunately, her screen time was minimal.

I learnt from IMDB (I don't know if it was ever mentioned in the series before) that Kirk's mother's name was Winona Kirk!

Saw it and loved it. I agree jouney...I really didn't like Winona Ryder in the film either...

Posted by Pyromantic (Member # 7658) on :

just watched a pirated version of the movie online...and I'll just say I'm glad I didn't pony up the dough to go see it in the theatres..I didn't really care for it.

Seeing it next week, no love for Winona Ryder around these parts [Frown] one of my favourite 80s stars, I'm hoping this movie marks a comeback of sorts, loved her in 'Alien: Ressurection': "I burned my modem. We all did". What a line.

Stitch,

They explain that the red sky appears to be blue to us humans not red because we don't see the "entire" Vulcan color spectrum...

Live long, and may the force be with you... [Smile]

Thanks Jdoc! There must have been an atmospheric disturbance during those episodes of Enterprise set on Vulcan, coz I'm positive the sky was red then... but that was a few years ago that I watched it so I'm likely wrong.

I forgot about Tyler Perry's cameo. He was even more ridiculously out of place than Winona. The whole theater busted out laughing when he made his first appearance.

I like the idea of semi no-names playing the roles of these iconic characters. The original Star Wars is a prime example...all those people are primarily remembered for the roles they played in this film...so Mark Hamile really is Luke Skywalker...not just an actor playing a character. They ruined it with the prequels giving roles to Liam Neeson and Sam Jackson...both great actors, but hard to detatch them from previous roles...so...Mace Windu is... that dude that played in Pulp Fiction. Same with Winona in Star Trek...it's like...hey...there's Winona Ryder dressed up in a robe, playing Spock's Mom....an unknown actress would have best suited this role...IMO. Does any of this make sense?

I read somewhere that Shatner was royal pizzed because he wasn't asked to be in the movie even a short part. Does anybody know why he wasn't?

Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :

Would have put them over budget...too much material for his uniform....ouch...that was rude....

Probably because Kirk had died in Trek Lore...

Noms Trek [Cool]

Of course, none of this film or any that follow are going to be part of Trek canon....

In the future episodes of Star Trek all humans can see the "entire" Vulcan color spectrum... [Smile]

***SPOILERS***
Which was only true after the Romulans had passed through the singularity taking them back in time. It could be argued that everything that occurred before that moment was in keeping with canon, thus meaning that prior to the Romulan world being destroyed, Kirk had already been killed.

Paradoxical Noms [Cool]

I read some stuff regarding Shatner's exclusion from the film. In an early draft of the screenplay he was to appear along with Spock, having travelled through the wormhole with him. However, the filmmaker's decided it was wrong to explicitly violate the original storyline that way since his character was killed in Generations. So even though this film takes place in an alternate timeline, Spock and Nero's Gang are from the original (unaltered) timeline where Kirk should be dead. So the whole thing was about respecting the original canon and not pandering to fans. I agree with their rationale 100%. Nimoy appartently didn't care for the decision either, however. Ironic, considering he and Shatner have not always been the best of buddies. By the way, Nichelle Nichols was also supposed to have a cameo in the film, playing Uhura's Grandmother, but her scene got cut.

I agree with you completely. Hollywood loves casting big name stars since they think we'll all appreciate the feeling of recognition, but it's bad form in movies like these. It ends up being very distracting and damages my suspension of disbelief. Of course that being said, Star Wars was hardly free from it either. Alec Guiness and Peter Cushing were both big stars that most audience members in 1977 would instantly recognize.

She sets her phaser on stunning, I wouldn't mind beaming her up to my bridge, all right 'Carry On' fans, make up your own innuendos.

Very good movie, loved the parts where Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk went William Shatner to put the button on those scenes (e.g. Kobayashi test, final scene aboard The Enterprise) Zachary Quinto was born to play Mr Spock and his comic timings right on cue (a round of applause for the casting director on that one), Karl Urban is excellent as Dr McCoy and my favourite character here whilst Star Trek’s supporting cast all play their parts well (nod to John ‘Harold’ Cho as Sulu who hilariously equates fencing with hand-to-hand combat and the laugh-a-minute Anton Yelchin as Chekov).

The romantic liaison between Uhura and Spock was a bit clichéd and out of sorts with the picture as a whole and there were a few scenes that wobbled or lacked credibility. Star Trek icon Leonard Nimoy whistles through his dentures in a pretty decent co-star role as future Mr Spock, or Spock Prime as he's listed in the credits, Winona Ryder’s cameo as Spock's mother was a tad pointless though I get the feeling a lot of her scenes were cut, and will probably re-appear on DVD. They could’ve bought Bill Shatner back considering ‘Generations’ was the worst instalment ever (closely followed by 'Insurrection') and that Captain Kirk's ignominious demise was the lamest exit in movie history; though I can understand Abram’s reasoning as why you couldn’t have too many familiar faces back if you’re attempting to reboot the franchise.

Now I’m a Star Trek fan, but not a Trekkie per say, in that I know the series and films quite well, but couldn’t tell you what Spock had for breakfast in episode 4 on stardate 2127.6 (Cheerios, maybe?) and Star Trek 2009 features some nice action / space battles, high on emotion but low on intelligence, its an entertaining, well paced summer blockbuster; nothing more, nothing less. I watched one of my favourite episodes from the original series ('The Enemy Within') immediately afterwards and, for obvious reasons, its not quite the same; there was a low tech, high calibre charm in the 1960s: a lot more emphasis on character and thought provoking storylines about human nature, the world and our place in it. Here, cerebral musings are undercut by laconic, witty one liners, razzle dazzle em' lasers and familiar sci-fi action movie set pieces. Director J.J Abram's seems to have conscientiously worked to a 'ST' fan's checklist in much the same way as he did in 'Mission Impossible III' and all the catchphrases, themes and motifs we know & love are present & accounted for. Other than that, the usual Abrams directorial problems persist e.g. TV style close ups, fast cuts and a almost no wide or epic shots. Good use of colors and lens flare though.

Its Star Trek, but not as we know it...

In episode 4, Spock ate toast with Andosian marmalade for breakfast.

I forgot about the Spock/Uhura romance. Add that to my list of things working against the movie, as I agree, that fell majorly flat. They established the Kirk/Uhura sexual tension and then just deflated it with the lame revelation that she's already with Spock. It would have been a much better bet to just play out that tension between Kirk & Uhura over the course of a couple sequels (ala Han Solo and Princess Leia). Besides I just don't buy Uhura and Spock together...

I really enjoyed the movie. Once you wrap your head around the fact that it is NOT the original Star Trek that is...

I didn't see any problems with Winona Ryder playing Spocks' mother, or with the Spock/Uhura romance. You just need to remember that it's NOT the same Star Trek.

I think all of the characters were played well. My least favorite would be Chekov.

[Big Grin] Weeeeeeeeeeee.......

It looks like you have two pictures of Shatner there. Also, the pictures of John Cho and George Takei are in reverse order.

I went to see the movie for the second time...really really like it. Might just start watching the original series, which I've not seen much of. I think they did a great job with the casting, but agree with jdoc...not sure about the Chekov role...I think mostly because I've seen the actor in a couple of recent roles and it was hard for me to detach from that...

No Sir, that is in fact Chris Pine as capt. kirk. He looks a lot like him in this picture doesn't he?

Yes, Cho and Takei are backwards, but, did you notice the biggest difference? Cho is Korean not Japanese...

Great jobs by Abrams! We just got out of seeing this as we decided to go see it finally before the Terminator Salvation midnight premiere. I also like how they used Nimoy in the film. 8/10.....
