Today I am using my old laptop that my husband "stole" from me and brought up to the office. It is so weird typing on thiskeyboard and using the mousepad! It has been so long,it is going to take me a day to regain my senses here, ha ha! How many of you use laptops and how many use a regular home or office pc? I ususally just use the regular pc at home and the one here at the office.

i use a desktop at work. we have a laptop at home, that i don't use for more than a few minutes at a time. it has a mouse and keyboard hooked up because i cannot stand laptop keys or the scroll pad.

I use an 8-Core at work (Mac desktop) and a macbook pro. Then I have a not to great laptop for personal use. I have never gotten the whole track pad thing down on laptopns. I never use a mouse at work either though. I have a wacom tablet so I basically draw everything I do. I also type considerably slower on the laptop.

Laptop at work (although with a docking station, so a proper keyboard and mouse) and both desktop and laptop at home. I find that keyboards on the laptop are fine, although choice is to always use a mouse.

I have both but I prefer my desktop. I bought the wireless mouse for my laptop b/c I hate the rolly mousepad too. I've went through two so far and the third wireless mouse I got can't be recognized by the laptop so I'm back to using the rolly, puzzling mouse, LOL.

Desktop at home and at work for surfing and consulting. My fingers are too big for the laptop plus I have no luck with them. Two went out on me in less than a year (both screen issues). I literally threw the last one off my balcony after it gave out lol........

I have both a Laptop(Netbook to be more precise) and a Quad-core desktop. Due to the nature of my work, I have a dual monitor setup. One monitor with any documentation/libraries that I might be using,and the other has the IDE that I code in.

I have a laptop and a desktop, but the desktop pc is used only for TV, movies and music. I do all my work on the laptop. And by work, I mean internet surfing.

I have 4 or 5 laptops at home and a desktop that I use for most things. I use the laptops for testing various networking and applications functions. I have another 4 or so laptops and another 3 desktops at work. I lose track of what's what from time to time. I run anything from Windows XP to Vista to Windows 7 to fedora (linux) to CentOS (linux) etc... I might get a new Macbook pro this year. The new operation system (Mac OS X v10.6 "Snow Leopard" current)is due in August I think. Good thing I don't have to pay for any of this stuff. I'd be broke...
I try to use a docking station for my primary machine because I too hate typing on laptops.

How are you finding Windows 7? I'm currently writing a few test programs on it, and, to be honest, this may be the finest O/S that Microsoft have ever written. I know that's not saying much, but...
I'm using BETA 7057 at the moment, but it has been stable since 7000.
I also program a lot for Ubuntu/Fedora, and a few other variations of Linux.

I too find it to be quite stable. Actually, XP has been pretty good (comparatively speaking). Windows 7 will definitely be a big improvement over Vista. I don't recall the beta version I'm running. It's about a month old. It's been much faster than Vista. Well, it really IS Vista you know. They just stripped out the bloat-ware. I thought I saw somewhere that current Vista users will be offered a free upgrade to Windows 7. Have you seen this?

I was only kidding; Microsoft are an easy target. XP(SP2) is a very stable O/S, one that most people still use. Hell, I still have a partition with it on.
It sounds like you're using Build 7000. This is going to be the O/S that Vista promised to be. The feedback so far has been fantastic.
I've been an on-off fan of Linux for about 15 years. Ubuntu is one of the most promising distro's -- it has sparked an interest in people who normally wouldn't bother.
Despite that, I think Linux is still too obscure for most Windows users, but things are improving.

I think linux will become more mainstream a couple of years from now, but, I don't see them overtaking Microsoft. They have to work more on "dummying-up" the UI and providing "one" option for dealing with Microsoft Office products. I run Open Office (as do you I bet) for everything but, people seem to still be confused about what/how they can work with non Microsoft products. There are still too many options for EVERYTHING in linux and that confuses people. Hey, if Apple can create the Mac (unix based) and get people to use it instead of Microsoft products then linux can do it. The problem here is that nobody (except for Apple) really wants to go head-to-head with Microsoft. Also, there needs to be a payoff (money) for this down the road. Then there's the whole vendor support issue...
