Since I don't drive the transportation to and from work turned out to be a huge issue.
The city bus doesn't run right by there; the closest it gets is about a twenty minute walk away so either I could bus it and then walk or take a cab ride straight to work. Well Bismarck is having there worst winter in a long time with December being the snowiest month EVER in Bismarck. So a twenty minute walk has usually not been feasible considering the twenty minute walk is basically over open country. So that leaves a cab ride to work which is expensive. Plus I found out the hard way that the cab isn't even dependable to get me to work on time. A couple times I would call over two hours ahead of time to pick me up at 9:30 so I could get to work by 10. Well by the time they would come pick me up it was well after 10 so I ended up being late.
That's the issue getting to work. My shift ran until 6:30PM and by that time there was no more busses running in that part of town so I was forced to cab it home every shift. Sometimes having to wait an hour to be picked up. PLUS...PLUS I also worked Sundays when the bus doesn't run so I was forced to cab it bothways on that day. Bottom line is about 1/3rd of my paycheck was for transportation.
I asked my account manager if I could move to another account in the building that only runs from 8am-5pm Monday thru Friday so I could have the bus as an option everyday both going to work and going home. He said he couldn't transfer me until he found a replacement for me which wouldn't be for at least a month or so until my account hold their next class and they complete the training. I then asked if he could switch my schedule around to where my hours would be more conducive to the bus schedule and he said that he couldn't since those were the hours I was hired to work.
Plus I found out I'm definitely NOT cut out to work in a call center environment. I sort of have a phone phobia where I have a very hard time talking on the phone to somebody I don't know; I'm much better on a face-to-face basis.
So yup I quit and need to start looking again tomorrow. I figure I could find a part time job close by that pays less and still come out ahead or at least the same as the job I just quit since I wouldn't have to pay all that money for transportation. Plus I wouldn't have all that extra stress or inconvenience. But I need to find one soon.
Bottom line is that it is my own fault that I'm currently not working. I knew that transportation would be an issue going in; I knew how much the cab charged per mile; I just didn't realize how far away the job actually was from my place and that the only taxi company in town is grossly understaffed at the moment.

hi sammy so sorry about your job? i hope you find something soon? i am basically in the same boat too i have been out of work since may after falling on the ice 3 times in february last year and now i can return to work part time with restrictions as i cannot use my left hand anymore and i am a office manager and left handed of course so it is tough for me too but hang in there something will come up for you i am sure!! dee

Got hired this morning as a Front Desk Clerk at a local hotel I used to work part-time at as a busboy.
Pay is a little less than the place I just quit but it's only a few blocks away so I can walk to and from there everyday and not have to rely on transportation so I'll end up money ahead.

One of our teachers couldn't get a license for years because he has epilepsy and had too many seizures. He can drive now...he sure does have a need for speed, LOL.

I never knew he didn't have a diver's license, but since HE made it a point to mention not having one, and if he had one-that might fix not having to worry about transportation. If someone has an apparent problem wrong, why is it rude to ask about it? If someone is walking with a limp, to ignore the fact that they have a limp -when that is part of who they are- and I am sure they have discussed it before- I don't think that's rude.
There's a lady in the Dollar Store that has no hair from chemo too- it is obvious what had happened, my mom started talking to her about it, asking her how she's doing, and they have become very friendly over it-sometimes when you ignore what someone is going through-I think that is even more rude- than maybe understanding the situation and being sympathetic to it..instead of ignoring it.

Sam i'm happy for you. With the way the world is right now it's scary. I'm in a union but am still scared i'm going to get cut to 20 hours.....when i'm used to 40. I shouldn't have to take a second job when i've been there 10 years. But I have many friends that have lost their jobs this last year.

Things are getting tough all over for way too many people who felt they had good job security until just recently.
Hopefully things will work out for you so you don't have to take a second job. But if worse comes to worse and you have to hopefully you can find one soon enough and make enough money where you can at least sustain the lifestyle you're used to financially.

Did I feel Isis' question was rude? No I didn't think it was rude. What I did think is that since she blurted out right away about the not having a license instead of first coming out that she felt bad for my situation or wishing me good luck to me it seemed as cold, uncaring and confrontational.
I don't have a license for some reason or another and I've never had one.
But since Isis feels it's OK to harp on something somebody says there's a question that's been bothering me for quite sometime about something she's said on numerous occasions.
You've said many times that kids today don't do anything outside anymore that all they do is spend time indoors playing video games. Yet all you ever seem to buy for your son is video games, CD's and DVD's. How do you rationalize that? Isn't that being very hypocritical on your part?
NOTE: This isn't taking a potshot at your son I'm just trying to get the logic behind how you can preach one thing but practice just the opposite.

First of all....I do agree with Muffy about how stupid this whole topic has become...Sam brought up walking, and taking the bus, and taking a cab, and I thought-if you got a driver's license then you could keep the job, and then maybe the problem would be solved...I had no idea...that a driver's license could spark such controversy.
I didn't know that was such a RUDE thing to ask somebody.
I am so sick and tired of the bickering too, it makes it so horrible to be here, and I am tired of just saying my own opinion about anything- it doesn't even have to be anything major- and there's a group of people on here, that if I say one thing- they will go bananas, and yes I have deleted topics on here- because I am so sick of it, I can't stand to see someone comment on something...if they have never even seen it, or have no clue what I am even talking, they just babble on and on about ...oh it's not the 80s anymore...duh....life today is wonderful.
Sam-about my son....I do complain about kids not playing outside anymore....what am I doing about it....hmmm-I am organizing an Easter Egg Hunt for April 11th, the Chamber of Commerce and the local Radio Station are backing me on it, and it will be huge-last year there was over 500 people there. My whole purpose of it, is to get kids out of the house, and for it to be free-because the economy is so bad, and I know people are losing their jobs, and I want people to go win something awesome-and jump start them off for spring with something fun. It's going to be at the local airport. It's my whole project.
What am I doing for my own family...I am buying a cabin in the woods in a State Park that I can take my friends and my family outdoors, so that we can go hiking, and snowmobiling, and swimming and picnicing and be away from town. I work hard at trying to keep all of the violence I can ...away from my son.
The world does not make that job easy on me. My son does want to see movies like The Dark Knight- because he lives on this planet- he sees all the hype about it, he thinks oooh, a superhero movie- this has to be awesome, and then I think..ok he is almost 16 years old-I think can handle it. But, after I see what a bloody violent mess it was, I think...geez...was that all neccessary- did all the killing in that movie make it so wonderful? He couldn't have been a great guy without as much killing. Right? That movie had such horrendous undertones to it.
When my son was younger, we walked out of Pirates of the Caribbean and Xmen 2-because they were so horribly violent. I don't let my kid play games like Grand Theft Auto or those Vice games-or anything that promotes a crime-he's not allowed to play things like Resident Evil, or anything with GORE in it. He actually wants to be a video game designer...because he wants to develop games for kids that aren't violent, because he doesn't like those kind of games anyway.
He doesn't watch ANY TV. He's been watching Season 2 and 3 of SOAP every night with me. Then we are going to finish watching Barney Miller and then we are going to watch the rest of CHiPs. The ONLY music he listens to is from the 80s. Outside of that, the only other exposure to music for him that he likes is on Rock Band or Guitar Hero, and there actually have been songs on those things, that I said I thought were horrible, and I didn't want him listening to them.
It is not going to hurt him ever...to not listen to a bunch of garbage.
My son knows right from wrong...he doesn't have a mean bone in his body, I am extremely proud of him, he is very smart, he's very well spoken, he's very social with people, and I will never ever have to second guess choices that he is going to make in life, because I know what kind of person he is.
He won't be swayed in to drugs, alcohol or smoking...because he has his own ideas about all of it, and what he thinks about it all, so I know he's going to be a great member of society, and I don't have to worry about him getting ahold of a machine gun and going nuts- and everyone out there should be glad that I did my job as a parent...because that's what scares me to death- is the people who didn't do their job right.
So...I hope that explains my son's life. He got 2 video games for Christmas, and an AC/DC CD, and 1 movie. Most of what he got were clothes.

Hi everyone... i am Lisa's son. my mom told me about what you guys said about me and video games and i wanted to respond also. But here is my point of view. i play games because i think it is fun. i do play call of duty but i dont ever think about running out and joining the military. i have explained to my mom before that i want to be a game designer because i want to make games anyone can enjoy. i get on my xbox and see downloadable games like Happy tree friends false alarm.. thinking they are for kids and then there is a big M for mature rating next to it saying " rated M for Intense Violence and Blood & gore". what is stopping a 8 year old from running to his mom and telling her the name of the game and she lets that kid buy it. the name is deceiving. i hate todays music. i think it sucks. i played guitar hero world tour and the 2nd to last song i had to play was called "Scream aim Fire" by bullet for my valentine. it was a horrible song. they were just screaming about killing and pull the trigger. but the game made me play it in order to play Hot for Teacher by Van Halen. and there was no way for me to know what that was about till i heard it. i also dont watch t.v. i cant stand the reality crap they put on tv where everything is over dramatized. even if the show is not reality then it is usually really cheesy and looks stupid. i probably sound like my mom talking on here. but i just wanted to tell you why i play games and i am limited on what i play but then again i have no desire to play GTAIV or Resident Evil 5. i am looking forward to the new ghostbusters game which is supposed to have all the original cast inculding Dan Akroyd,Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver. also there is this one cool game coming out which is a remake of a 1980's classic game :Matt Hazzard. which the game is a parody of all the video game cliches like wizards and karate dudes and stuff. So... Thats about it.

My friend has a really good job in downtown Pittsburgh, but she rarely drives to work. She takes the bus which costs her $2 each way. If she parked there, the cheapest parking for her is like $12 per day. That is a lot of money when you add it up for the week. The only time she drives is if she may have to leave early to go to a Dr.'s appt. or pick up her daughter at school. We are luck y that we have a good public transportation system, even though they are operating in the red right now. But I blame that on the overpaid CEO's and the drivers too- some make $125,000 a year! If you divided that into 3, that would be two more people they could give a job to.

He loves alot of the stuff from the 80s...after all he is my kid...so how could he not, it's like he was raised in the 80s. I actually am looking forward to when I can actually let him see some of the Rated R stuff...that should really do a number on him. My partner's best friends is a concierge, and has worked in a number hotels in Melboure. When I first met him, he was working in an old fashioned, stuffy hotel, you know the type with the giant chandelier, the Edwardian furniture etc...
We visited him there one day, it was really posh. Then he moved to a more modern hotel, it had a fountain in the lobby and it was always so humid in there! We stayed there one night, the hotel was lovely, and the elevator spoke to you and wished you a pleasant stay!

Unfortunately I've only worked one shift at my new job.
The day before I was to start I had symptoms which i felt were related to food poisoning. My first day on the job (last Monday) I was still feeling lousy but went in since it was my first day at a new job; if I was at a job that I've been at awhile I would have called in sick. I had last Tuesday off but was still feeling lousy, by this time I felt I had the stomach flu instead of food poisoning. Woke up last Wednesday and still felt lousy so I went in to see the Doctor who told me to drink Pedialyte like it was going out of style. He also gave me two days off from work. Friday I was scheduled again and still was not up to working as my flu symptoms were still around.
I was scheduled off for the weekend and my flu symptoms finally started to go away.
However since this past weekend I've been very lightheaded and very weak in my limbs. My new job requires me to be on my feet for the entire shift and being light headed like I've been I haven't been able to go to work.
Finally yesterday morning I went into see my Doctor again to see just what the heck is going on. This is a huge concern to me as I haven't called in sick to work for probably five years (not counting time off related to my back and gallbladder surgeries. My Doctor says he thinks it could probably be some other virus other than the flu but he also noticed on my blood work done last week that one of my liver enzyme numbers is a little elevated; this same number has been elevated in the past but not to the point to make him concerned' but he did notice that it was a little higher than usual.
He ordered more blood work for me yesterday; they took 8 tubes out of my arm. I also had an ultrasound done on my abdomen, thankfully I hadn't eaten or drank anything for over twelve hours so I was able to do that yesterday instead of scheduling for a later date. I've also been collecting my urine all day today as they want a 24 hour urine collection from me.
So right now it's a waiting game for me as I wait the results from my tests. Done some research on the internet on just what could be wrong but there's just so many things it possibly could be that it's mind boggling.
Not sure on the status of my job either.

Alot of times the liver enzymes being elevated are coming from an infection in your body...that could be from a virus/flu. Food poisoning usually doesn't last longer than a day or 2. If it is longer than that-it isn't food poisoning. Drinking Gatorade is one of the best things to do...you need to flush everything out of your system.
I have come to this realization about Health issues....doctors really can't do a whole lot for people on anything other than surgery-if it is something major-and they can perscribe medicine- which half the time they get the diagnosis wrong in the first place. You have to be very pro-active about your health. If you read the internet though-you'll think your dying, because every major illness has the symptoms of anything else you can think of.
You guys were talking about drinking and all that in another thread, and I got bashed for saying I don't do it...but the reason I don't (other than all the stuff I said), is because of how seriously bad it is for your health. If you do drink...and your having liver problems- don't drink alcohol. Take a look at a picture of an alcoholic's liver- what alcohol does is it is a diuretic- it deplets all the water out of your system. That's why people who drink look like they are 70, when they are 35. The first thing it attacks is your liver. You body isn't meant to drink alcohol- that's the part that floors me about people drinking....your body is telling you to stop- when people are throwing up- that's your body's way of saying your going to kill yourself with alcohol poisoning. Because that is exactly what anyone is doing when they drink alcohol- they are poisoning themselves.
Sam-I am only saying this stuff...incase you really are having a serious liver problem- you have mentioned drinking numerous times- so if I was you- that would be the first thing I would omit from my lifestyle.

This is just an observation.....do you think that maybe your having an anxiety attack about going back to work? Maybe your not ready, maybe there is something about doing that job that is making you stressed out and making you physically ill, maybe for whatever reasons...you really aren't up to doing that job?

Anxiety and panic attacks can manifest in many forms. I've been having work related panic attacks for the last week, as well as 24 hour non stop vomiting. I ended up in hospital yesterday on an IV for 7 hours.

I've just had my hours reduced, from 38/week to 25/week. Not sure how I'm gonna manage with a mortgage and partner who can't work due to disablility.

Still waiting for the test results. Just left a message with my doctors nurse and still waiting for today's mail.
I figure since I haven't heard anything yet that either no news is good news or they still haven't proccessed all the tests yet.
All I know is that I still feel light headed and weak. I'm thinking I could possibly have mono or maybe the beginning stages of diabetes or a thousnad other things.

Sorry to hear of your plight Sammy. You could have mono, that's what happened to one of my friends. She didn't know what was wrong and was sick for a long time. Ignore the amateur psychiatrists here, and just wait to hear back from the Doc.

All my doctor said is that I have a fatty liver which means that he wants me to lose weight and avoid alcohol. But the tests showed no parasites, no mono, no diabetes, no lupus, no hepatitis, no immune diseases. My doctor is one of those who likes to joke around which is one of the reasons I've continued to go to him but today he said "I even tested you for stuff I learned in medical school that they said I'd never run into'
He does want me to go in again next Thursday to recheck a couple liver numbers. He said I might eventually need to have a biopsy on my liver but he doesn't want to go down that route right now.
All he can think of that whats plaguing me right now is just some virus that doesn't want to let go so he wants me to go back to drinking pedialyte like it's going out of style which doesn't bother me too much because it tastes pretty good.

Sammy, you may have the same stomach virus that I had, and just got over. And many more people around here have had it too. I was sick for 2 weeks; most other people have been sick for 2 weeks too, but my hubby's friend was sick for three weeks. I like Powerade, I was drinking the blue or red punch. Also lots of tea and water.

My partner has fatty liver and Irritable Bowel Syndrome - which we've recently discovered is all linked to a recently diagnosed case of Diabetes.

No update on the job front.
I originally applied for food stamps in September and believed to have been declined. Went to re-apply last week and found out that I actually had accrued $866 in food stamp benefits since September that ended at the end of January but I should be able to start collecting on again with my new application. So purchasing food will not be a problem for quite sometime.
I also applied for housing assistance back when I lost my job in August and finally got to the top of the waiting list and I'll find out tomorrow how much help I'll get in that department.
I really don't like receiving assistance from both the state of North Dakota and Burleigh County. But I have to make do with it until I finally can find a steady source of income.
On my health front I finally got over my illness and my last batch of bloodwork shows that my liver is in good operating order and my enzyme numbers are almost back to normal. But I'm still working on losing weight and over the past month between my being sick and my dieting I've lost between 25-30 pounds. Some of my clothes have started to fit again.

Cool. Maybe you can find a job at a Home Depot, or pumping gas, or, McDonald's or something. It'll get you back on your feet. Any kind of job where you are making money will make you feel better, and, it is easier to find other better jobs when you're already working.
Stick with it. You can do it!

Did you injury back in a work related injury?
How does someone in your situation like this, be able to live on their own and have an apartment?
I know you have talked about that before...I thought you live alone...can you get a roommate to share the rent, or even move home with your family, until you find a job, and save up some money?

Dude, glad to hear you are finally feeling better! And don't feel bad about asking for assistance, that is what it is there for. You have worked hard and payed into the system with your taxes, so if you need the help it should be there for you. I don't have a problem with someone who is down on his luck seeking help. Keep up with seeing your doctor too- we want you around for a long time!

Pitt's right, Sam. It's not like you're just sitting at home because you're too lazy to work. You had back problems and then health problems. You had a job and tried very hard to get another one. It's people like you who deserve the government assistance, IMHO. It's bums who sit around at home doing nothing at all for the simple fact that they're too LAZY to do anything that I have real issues with. Good luck with the diet and congrats on losing the weight!!!
