i'm truly sad.
but i knew this was coming..

estelle getty a.k.a. sofia of the wonderful sitcom, 'golden girls' has passed away this morning.
she was 84 years old.

just recently, tv land had their awards show and did a tribute to the golden girls show. getty was absent because of her health.

apparently she had been suffering from dementia for years.
i've lost relatives with dementia - it's awful.

anyway, i loved the golden girls show. the character of sofia was my favorite next to dorothy of course.

RIP estelle, and thanks for all the laughter..

I heard this on the news this morning, it's very sad news.

I've got the first 4 seasons of the Golden Girls on DVD. The writer did such a good job with funny lines for Sophia, but it was Estelle Getty who gave Sophia her feisty spark.

I read that she had to audition 3 times for the role - she failed the first 2 times because she was too young. The 3rd time, she got a makeup artist to age her... and she got the job!

Devolution here,

Wasn't she the youngest or second youngest?

I know she was a year younger than Bea Arthur. I'm not sure about Betty White, but I can't imagine she'd have been younger than Rue McClanahan.
