estelle getty a.k.a. sofia of the wonderful sitcom, 'golden girls' has passed away this morning. she was 84 years old.
just recently, tv land had their awards show and did a tribute to the golden girls show. getty was absent because of her health.
apparently she had been suffering from dementia for years. i've lost relatives with dementia - it's awful.
anyway, i loved the golden girls show. the character of sofia was my favorite next to dorothy of course.

I heard this on the news this morning, it's very sad news.
I've got the first 4 seasons of the Golden Girls on DVD. The writer did such a good job with funny lines for Sophia, but it was Estelle Getty who gave Sophia her feisty spark.
I read that she had to audition 3 times for the role - she failed the first 2 times because she was too young. The 3rd time, she got a makeup artist to age her... and she got the job!

I know she was a year younger than Bea Arthur. I'm not sure about Betty White, but I can't imagine she'd have been younger than Rue McClanahan.
