Was it good? The last 00s horror movie I watched was Midnight Meat Train. If you haven't seen it don't bother with it.

I love the Devil's Rejects!! I also love the song...

I've got Devil's Rejects dvd so I watch it regularly as I'm a huge fan. I liked it better than House of 1000 Corpses. I hadn't saw Unborn or Quarantine yet.....

i watched the shaft and they wait on sci-fi this morning never saw them before so they must be fairly new? i did think they wait was the better of the two though!

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

Just watched Perkins' 14, which is in the new crop of After Dark 8 Films to Die For. Pretty good movie...it took it awhile to get interesting but when it did, boy did it get interesting fast! Very, very, very gory. It also had a semi-decent storyline for a horror movie.

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

Autopsy, #2 in my collection of the new batch of After Dark movies. Very good movie....so far this year's 8 are better than last year's 8.

Posted by MotleyRulz (Member # 3598) on :

Are they planning on doing the After Dark series yearly petty? If I'm not mistaken, I saw a couple of them maybe from the first batch on the Sci Fi Channel a while ago. I'm behind as I haven't saw any from this year's collection. Which ones are worth watching from this year in your opinion?

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I hope it's yearly. There's only three of them that I haven't seen, and they're all foreign. I've just watched two of this year's, Autopsy and Perkins' 14 and both were really good. I think the ones from the first year were the best. From last year's set, Lake Dead was the best. Crazy Eights was also good but not really "horror," more suspenseful actually. The only one that I didn't really like was The Abandoned. Very strange film.

Posted by buffalo-girl (Member # 7498) on :

i agree with you pettyfan lake dead was pretty good and crazy eights i will have to check out perkins 14 and autopsy on my way to ebay now lol!! thanks for the info

I was a little disappointed with Dark Ride. I think it could've been better.

It could have been alot better...but i thought that the brother thing was good....I didn't see that coming. I just got Wicked Little Things.....haven't watched it yet though.

Dying Breed, movie # 3 in my 8 Films to Die For III collection. I really wanted to like this movie, but I felt as though something was missing. It was decent, especially in the end, but still. It could've been much better. I had never before watched a movie about cannabalistic Australians...

Posted by saturnchick (Member # 7524) on :

Mirrors - it was just okay, IMO.

5/10

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I watched From Within, movie #4 in my new After Dark collection. It was pretty good--there were a couple surprises that I sure didn't see coming, and it had an interesting ending. Overall, not bad.

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I watched Slaughter, which is another of the After Dark III movies. Oh, it was horrible. There was no horror at all. The box said it was rated R for "disturbing images." The only disturbing parts were the child porn and incest references. I wouldn't recommend this at all.

I also watched Conjurer. I'd never heard of it. It was actually good. It had John Schneider (from Dukes of Hazzard). I didn't like the ending, but otherwise it was good. It had a couple of jump out of your seat moments.

i finally watched see no evil to the end last night i thought it was pretty good didn't kane make some other horror movies also? if so i would like to check them out if anyone knows the titles? please!! this morning i watched alone in the dark with christian slater it was okay nothing great!! dee

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I watched Broken, another After Dark III movie. Not really horror, but there was a mystery with it and it was certainly better than that horrid Slaughter.

Posted by Stitch Groover (Member # 2895) on :

I watched "Dance of the dead" a couple weeks ago, but it's horror/comedy.
The last true horror film I watched was "The Strangers" starring Liv Tyler. Very scary, very atmospheric, I'm not ashamed to admit it elicited a couple of yelps of fear and suprise from me!!

Am looking forward to seeing "Let the right one in" when it gets released.

I watched about 15 minutes of Baby Mama last night. Not a horror movie, but, horrible... [Smile]

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I finally watched Reincarnation, which is from the first set of 8 Films to Die For. It was subtitled. I finally begain ejoying it after I thought, "Screw trying to read what they're saying." When I just watched it I enjoyed it.

i watched carny last night with lou diamond philips it was okay nothing spectacular though!!

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I was gonna watch Carny and forgot it was on! I watched a movie on Lifetime instead.

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I watched Quarantine. It's one of those movies that make you think, what if that really happened? It was pretty good; I didn't like the shaky camera and I haven't heard so much screaming in a movie since I watched Penny Dreadful.

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I watched Timber Falls on Sci-fi. Pretty good movie about a WV (ha ha) backwoods family who need women to breed. Plenty of blood and gore and a halfway decent plot.

Posted by buffalo-girl (Member # 7498) on :

i watched joyride 2 on sci-fi last night it was pretty good alot of blood and gore also i was surprised they didn't cut it actually just the swearing was bleeped of course i also watched saw and saw 2 on sci-fi last night also dee

Over the weekend Texas Chainsaw Massacre the beggining was on TV,now i sat down to watch it and got a bit confused to start with as i mistook it for the 2003 remake.A mistake not helped by the fact that this one has some of the same actors from the remake in it,anyway sort of figured it was a prequel in the end.
I didn't think it was as good as the 2003 remake but still a good horror film just think it relied on the gore and shock factor a bit to much.
Have to admit i do like the way both films are shot the colour always seems to portray the hot grimey look well.

Let the Right One In (2008)

Absolutely stunning. This is the kind of filmmaking that seems to have been relinquished from Hollywood. Easily the best horror movie I've seen in the last few years. I can't recommend it enough.

The Grudge 3--judging from the ending we'll probably get a Grudge 4.

Is this the one that deals with a girl and a car accident and something stemming from that?

Posted by journey (Member # 7316) on :

No. It's a vampire movie about a lonely little boy who makes friends with a reclusive young girl. It's actually more of a character-driven piece than a straight horror film, but it's fantastic. The photography is stark and beautiful, the performances are all top-notch and believable, the pacing is perfect, and relationship between the two main characters is engrossing and fascinating. It's just a really well-made film that doesn't rely on non-stop pornographic gore or overblown CGI to enage the audience.

Friday the 13th (not the origina) saw it in the theater with some friends and it was just....not great.....at all.

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I've seen three...

Incubus--okay, so Tara Reid can't act for crap, and there was waaaay too much fake moaning and crying, and the plot was somewhat improbable. But ya know what? It wasn't half bad. There were some creepy moments.

The Unborn--like The Uninvited, it renewed my faith in PG-13 horror movies. It was a pretty good, creepy film.

Hostel II--I never got through part one, it was so awful, but this one was much better. Loved the ending. Wonder if there will be a part three?

we rented haunting in connecticut from the red box last night i didn't care for it kinda lame for a (true) scary movie! i didn't think it was scary at all? now i am waiting for the collector to come out on dvd now that looks pretty good hopefully anyways!

I watched Messengers 2: The Scarecrow. It was good for a prequel. I think it was better than the first one...this one had more gore.

A Haunting in Connecticut--not too shabby.

Posted by journey (Member # 7316) on :

I just saw Drag Me to Hell (2009). It was pretty good, but not the modern horror masterpiece some have claimed. Actually it reminded me a lot of Stephen King's Thinner. I read a bunch of reviews where people were criticizing the over-abundance of CGI and now that I've finally seen it, I have to agree. It was a bit overly aggressive at times. I think the biggest issue with the film, however, was its weird tonal shifts. It's set up to be a serious supernatural thriller in the mold of The Exorcist or The Omen, but it throws in some randomly placed Evil Dead-like campy moments that just don't fit the overall tone of the film. And then there's the strange casting of Justin Long as a serious character not in keeping with his usual sarcastic onscreen persona (which I could never quite get used to). All in all I'd give it 3 stars out of 5.

I love Horror movies and 9 outta 10 times when I rent I rent horror. The funny thing is very little of it actually SCARES me. Well, I rented the Spanish film REC last week and was literally jumping off the couch screaming. Even my huband was fidgeting in his seat!

This is the movie that the film QUARANTINE is a remake of. I havent seen QUARANTINE but my best friend saw it and said it was good.

I know subtitles put a lot of people off but I highly suggest you just rent REC. Very freaky movie.

ORPHAN. I had a few strikes against me because I had accidentally stumbled across 'spoilers' on the movies IMDB Message Board but even though I knew a few twists this movie was VERY enjoyable. The little girl who plays Esther was fabulous (and even though Esther is evil as all get-out she's so cute and charming I dont doubt I would have let her in my home too!) I have a soft spot for Evil Little Kid movies (they freak me out!) and this was a very good one. Recommended.

Watched the new Friday the 13th. Typical story line "kids go campin but they dont come home" anyway it didnt have the same feel as the old ones but im a fan so i atleast gotta watch it once. Last weekend we watched "haunting in connecticut". Coulda made it a little less far fetched and it woulda been more enjoyable. None of these new horror flicks got that good old 80's feel to them.

A Haunting in Connecticut...yeah, it scared the bejesus out of me...I'm going to buy it! I thought it was great!

Love Virginia Madsen and it had an 80's creepiness to it!!

Friday the 13th.

Big Fat 'Meh' from me.

After the remake successes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween I was really looking forward to this.

Jason was unconvincing, the plot made little sense and the ending was just a riduculous add-on that anybody who has ever seen a horror movie would have seen coming from a mile away. Pathetic.

Noms The 14th [Cool]

The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre with Jessica Biel. It was horribly boring. It lacked everything the original had. This is exactly why I don't like remakes.

Just seen the new Friday the 13th and have to say i didn't think it was as bad as some people make it out to be.
Now i know the story is not original and only a rework of bits of the first 3 films, but this type of franchise is never going to develop anything really original story wise.
As far as the new Jason goes he was ok and i like the way they decided to make him quicker and more athletic,if anything it makes him a scarier killer as he would not be as easy to outwit.Though i have to say Kane Hodder is still the best Jason.

Watched last house on the left last night. It was ok in its story line, very suspenseful. Except for the un-necessary rape scene the rest of the movie was pretty good especially if ya like a good revenge flick. I wont say no more as to not spoil it but I do reccomend chekin it out.

The only thing I can say about that is you can see it coming a mile away so you can keep your finger on the fast forward button and buzz right thru it. I know what your sayin though, why wreck a movie with garbage like that.

I saw Halloween 2. I was kind of hoping it would be better than the first Rob Zombie remake since it presumably wouldn't need to spend half the movie on inflated backstory and could just concentrate on straight-ahead slasher action. Well, that didn't help. It was even worse than the first one. I know a lot of people just love his work, so I realize that I risk touching off a whole ridiculous debate here, but I've come to the conclusion that Rob Zombie is the Michael Bay of horror - just an overblown hack who epitomizes style over substance.

Posted by buffalo-girl (Member # 7498) on :

we watched dreamscapes last night it started good but then got corny hubby fell asleep on the couch not a good sign lol

Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :

I've seen the Halloween 2 remake as well...kinda liked the first one, but not a fan of part 2. I disliked any scenes with Rob Zombie's wife as Michael Myers' dead mother, and I really don't like what Zombie did with the Loomis character. As alwyas, the originals are always better.

Posted by journey (Member # 7316) on :

Every movie he makes has the exact same look and style. It's all a bunch of flashy cinematography and editing that looks like he's trying to emulate a Nine Inch Nails or Marilyn Manson video from the '90s. And aesthetically, he just revels in white trash, '70s kitsch, grime. That was alright when he was doing House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects since they were homages to '70s revenge/torture flicks like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Last House on the Left (which were low budget, southern, '70s, and grimy looking) but for Halloween it's grossly out of place and makes him look like a one-trick pony. I don't know...maybe he'll improve with time.

oh so it was sort of a blessing to see those annoying ******** get wasted, huh? I hear ya!

I'll watch it either tonight or tomorrow night.

I also rented a horror flick for the weekend called DEADGIRL thst supposed to be pretty good.

UPDATE: Yeah, it was okay. I had hear RAVE reviews... I think its always shocking when the villains are children in these things, sort up ups the creep factor. But REALLY, it didnt rock my world and the people in it were pretty damn stupid and the kids were annoying even before they "truned"! (By the way, what the Hell made them "turn" in the first place? Was that ever mentioned???

No, I don't think it did. I wondered what made them turn too.

A German vampire flick called FROSTBITTEN (although when the title came up on screen it was spelled "FROSTBITEN") Pretty good actually. I would recommend, especially around this time of the year, as the whole thing takes place in the snow!

The Final Destination--I know critics hated it but I thought it was one of the better of the franchise.

Johnny, is Paranormal Activity kinda like the Blair Witch Project...like on a handheld camera?

Jessie, I really enjoyed Black Christmas. Haven't seen it in awhile; I'll have to pull it out and watch it.

Posted by johnny76 (Member # 8174) on :

The majority is filmed with a handheld Petty, but you can tell it was done much more professionally. Its not all shaky like B.W.P. But the reality aspect is similar, which is one of the reasons I really enjoyed this movie.

Don't really know if I liked it or not. Much, much different from any other "Halloween" movie..sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. None of the characters are likable except for Sheriff Brackett and maybe Annie. The most violent and angry portrayal of Michael Myers so far.

Rented SORORITY ROW and didnt think much of it. I usually stay away from remakes and modern horror movies but I thought Id give it a shot. It was okayyyyy, but nothin special. A lot of pretty girls runnin around in skimpy outfits and high heels (dont you love when they run in high heels in a horror movie?idiots!) but seeing that Im a woman their charms were wasted on me.

Cabin Fever 2--please, please don't bother watching it if you haven't!!! Eli Roth has nothing to do with the movie. Ryder Strong (who was in the first one) is listed as the main player...but...they showed him for all of 20 seconds in a flashback! Ugh, there is sooooo much wrong with this movie! The first one was pretty good, IMO. This one...well....the acting is forced, the plot dumb, and the ending...well....I foresee a Cabin Fever 3 in our future.

The only bright side was the previews....

Yep, saw the Hills Run Red. I didn't care for it at all. I love horror movies but this one was a bit much. Haven't heard of 13 Gantry Row. Might have to check it out.

I watched Mothman on Syfy last night. It was good.

I also watched Dread, which is one of the new After Dark 8 Films to Die For. Ohhh it was HORRIBLE!!! No pun intended, but it was dreadful!! If this is how they're all gonna be this year I'm not sure if I want to watch anymore.

I wathced THE BOX. It sucked.

I also saw AVATAR, which I sort of lieked til we hit the two hour mark. The movie is too damn long!

Oh and THE COLLECTOR which is a pretty bad horror movie.

My luck was TERRIBLE with New Releases this week!

I have THE LOVELY BONES in the house. Maybe tonight.

House of the Devil (2009)

As intended, it captures the feel of the early 80's very well, but it wasn't really my kind of horror flick.

"Are you not the babysitter?"

The box (2009)

More mistery than horror..
I may be the only person on this planet that kinda liked it. Except for the ending that is.

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" 2010

What a lousy movie. Give me Robert Englund in the worst sequel imaginable over this boring crap.

I'm in the minority who really enjoyed "The Box" as well. Nice period detail, atmosphere, direction, "twilight zone" meets paranoid '70s Spielberg feel.

Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009):

As expected...this movie was pretty lame. Just your average run-of-the-mill mindless, plotless bloodfest. Horrible acting, especially from the tall blonde female lead character, who might just be the worst actress I've seen in the last decade in a horror film. Even for playing a highschool dumb blonde ditz..she was pretty horrid. I cannot recommend this film at all in the slightest. Unless you're one of those patient few who's actually wasted your hard earned $$$ on the last few SAW movies and didn't stop after the 2nd one like you should have.

Not technically a "Horror" movie but I watched the stalker flick ALONE WITH HER and really liked it.

I also re-watched most of MAY, a movie I had seen when it first came out and had remembered liking. Its definately an unsung gem. Of course I have to watch the last half hour again cuz my father called me long distance and I ended up talking to him through the end of the movie.

in complete agreement...im hard pushed to find indate movies, new releases which have a wow factor and not the $$ signs in producers eyes. Ive been going down the foriegn film route and finding more joy there..(martyrs / rec / rec 2)

Christina Ricci: Im not dead
Liam Neeson: You ARE dead
Christina Ricci: Im not dead

Christina Ricci: Im not dead
Liam Neeson: Why do you annoying dead people keep insisting your still alive when Ive already told you twice your dead! Your dead! Dead, dammit! Deal with it.

The Collector--Now, I'm all for horror, gore, whatever. But torture?? That's a bit much for me, and that's all the Collector was--a torture movie. I mean, it had somewhat of a plot and whatever, but ugh. I looked away from the TV more often than I looked at it.

Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :

Yeah I didnt care for that one either. Why was the dude even breakinging into their house to torture them? Did he have a motive?

Im a HUGE Horror fan but "violence for the sake of violence" sorta turns me off. I like motives. I like a little more STORY. Sadly nowadays a LOT of Horror is someone tying someone to a chair and torturing them for an hour and twenty minutes. I wish this Horror trend would die and die fast.

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

Yeah, I never got why he was breaking into their houses either. And the part where he saved the spider (right after killing someone) was a little...odd. I mean really you're gonna torture an entire family of people (and their cat) but you're gonna save a spider???

Secret Sunday a.k.a. 9 wat (2010):
 -

A very good Thai Horror film that I can highly recommended for any fan of the Genre. Well acted, Creepy, Great Cinematograpghy, and even dramatic in some parts. The only flaw I see in this film is that the plot can get a bit confusing and hard to follow at some points. Especially due to the fact that it's english subtitled. But other than that it makes for a great late night, alone-in-the-dark viewing experience. [Smile]

Watched The Crazies (2010) last night.
It was a good movie, some minor flaws but all in all it was entertaining 90+ minutes.
Decent cast, nice small town setting and spooky, intense atmosphere.

I´ve seen the original ´73 Romero film once in the late 80s
but don´t remember anything about it.

petty fan what is the reeds like,i've seen kill theory and the final and thought they were both really good,i think i can remeber liking hoboken hollow ,i'm sure jason connery also appeared in it. venom and the crazies also get the thumbs up, i really liked the collector,ok it did not have the most logical plot out there, but i would say that's 99% of horror films in general! just watched john carpenter's the ward and though nothing amazing i quite enjoyed it!

Nightmare on elm street (2010) The film was ok, but no one can play Kruger like Robert Englund. The new freddys mask was terrible, he just wasnt scary, didnt have the freddy sense of humour which makes the originals. I just kept thinking thats the guy from watchmen hes not freddy [Roll Eyes]

Someone above mentioned Venom (2005),now that's a cool and underatted modern horror flick,I have a budget blu ray of it and though it's in the wrong wide screen aspect ratio (its meant to be 2.35 but instead is in 1.78 ) i'd still say that it's well worth the cheap price that it's going for!

Here's a few random modern horrors of my shelfs from 2000 onwards that I think are worth checking out!

Stag Night,The Ward,Night Of The Wolf - Late Phases,Monster Man,Alone With Her (which is more of a thriller) and The Orphan.

 -

100 Feet,Fingerprints,Demonic,Mother's Day,Devil and Dolan's Cadillac (again more of a thriller) which is based on a Stephen King story.

"When Kimberly has a violent premonition of a highway pileup she blocks the freeway, keeping a few others meant to die, safe...Or are they? The survivors mysteriously start dying and it's up to Kimberly to stop it before she's next."

My favourite of the sequels. The pile-up scene is well done:

Watched the 2014 sci - fi horror Extraterrestrial last night and it was OK - ish featuring a cast of mostly unknowns (except for Michael Ironside and Ginger Snaps Emily perkins) performing more than adequately enough and some rather nifty special effects though there was still one instance of pretty crummy CGI in an outrageous Alien probe scene towards the end.

It was written & directed by the Vicious Brothers of who I have never heard off before and they did at times here show quite a bit of talent though I must say that i do not think that all aspects of the film were handled as well as they could have been, for starters some of the characters here (especially the main group of teens) acted so irrational and stupid at times that it started to grate a bit and that by the end of the movie I was getting that fed up with there continuosly daft actions that I had long been wishing for it to be over!

Overall though it was not too bad and I'd say at least worth a rental though to be honest I can't see myself rushing back to watch it again any day soon!

V.F.W. (2019)

,A group of war veterans must defend their local V.F.W. post and an innocent teen against a deranged drug dealer
and his relentless army of punk mutants.' (Imdb)

Fourth feature-length film from Joe Begos (following Almost Human, The Mind's Eye, and Bliss) is another treat for fans of
hardcore exploitation- / B-movies from the 70s and 80s, starring Stephen Lang, William Sadler, Fred Williamson, Martin Kove,
David Patrick Kelly, and George Wendt.

Very much influenced by John Carpenter's Assault On Precinct 13 and Escape From New-York, V.F.W. also includes a terrific
retro-style score with lots of dark soundscapes that add to the overall atmosphere of dread and impending doom.

Some scenes are a bit overly dark (literally) and it looses a bit of steam around the one hour mark, but there's some good tension
in the first half and an appropiately excessive finale when the old-timers fend off the scumbag invaders from their turf with the aid
of knives, an axe, a big buzzsaw, and an old army truck.. and yes, there will be blood ! [Big Grin]

Check out the trailer (which is actually quite good too) : www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yYN2-crPCI

True, very true..

However, i must say i'm pretty impressed by what Joe Begos has done so far. He's definitely not doing these type of movies because it's a trendy thing to do,
and i don't really see him as the umpteenth filmmaker that wants to do some sort of homage to grindhouse cinema from a bygone era.
I feel there's a certain seriousness to his films instead of the usual "hip-to-do-retro-grindhouse-style" attitude most common in the last 15-20 years.

I still need to watch Bliss though, which -i believe- is regarded to be his most accomplished work to date. I have the Eureka UK blu-ray laying around
here somewhere, but it's still sealed in shrinkwrap.. but i'll get there, eventually.. i hope. (some things still haven't changed as you might notice)

And when it comes to V.F.W., i bet you'll like it.. even if it was just for the actors. Keep in mind, Fred Williamson was 81 years old when this film was shot !

I've got V.F.W Johnny/ATomiK my son got it for me for my birthday the other month and when it started the first few minutes I wasn't so sure with its over the top splatter I was thinking oh god is this going to be ridiculous but within a few minutes especially when the main cast shows I was really starting to dig it it's a pretty cool flick and the cast alone if your a fan of any involved I'd say definitely put it on your to watch list!

Trying to think of a few other modern horrors I have checked out recently I could recommend but they are few and far between!

Reborn with Barbara Crampton,Michael Pare and Rae Dawn Chong was OK Carrie inspired nonsense it was quite entertaining actually and theme park set horror Hellfest was not bad apart from a really crummy ending!

V.F.W certainly gets my recommendation!

Jordan Peele's Us (2019)

,..A family's serene beach vacation turns to chaos when their doppelgängers appear and begin to terrorize them..' Imdb

The acting was okay, and the first 25 minutes or so have a nice uneasy feel of impending doom, but as soon as the "other" people arrive,
all logic is thrown out the window and the whole thing devolves into a pretentious mess that makes zero sense. The twists and revelations
in the final act are so ludicrous it becomes an insult to the viewer's intelligence.

I honestly can't understand why this got mainly positive reviews and was awarded with several prizes. I wasn't particularly impressed with
Peele's earlier Get Out (2017) either, and as far as i'm concerned he is one of the most overrated filmmakers in recent years.

This, of course, is just one man's opinion..
