This one I'll have to disqualify myself from, since I was too young to have seen any of the 80s Olympiads. But for everyone else here, either summer or winter games, which one moment in time stands out the most in your memories?

i really dont ever watch the olympics, except for the hockey and at one time volleyball, so i'm not such a good person to ask.
but i will say, "the miracle on ice" is the greatest olympic victory for america ever.

Did you know that one person who competed in the Olympics during the 80's...is still competing in this year's Olympics?
It is 41-year-old (and a mother of one daughter) swimmer Dara Torres. She competed in the '84 Games in L.A. and the '88 Games in South Korea. She also was in the '92 and the 2000 Games.

During the '84 summer olympics my family spent a week on the Washington State coast in a fishing town called Westport. The weather was great and so was the fishing. I remember that my dad and I had matching olympics t-shirts. I even used colored markers to put the olympics rings logo on my arm (I was 14).

I also liked Virgil Hill taking the silver in boxing in '84. Not too often that somebody from North Dakota does well on the big stage.

The 80s for me will always be the decade where the Olympic dream faded.
The US team not going to the games in Moscow in 1980, and the Soviet and East German team not attending LA in 1984 in response.....
Although the British athletes did well and won some gold medals there, you always wonder what would have happened if ALL the world's best athletes had been able to attend.
And Devo - the guy you are talking about is Derek redmond. This is the description from his Wikipedia page:
"Injuries had consistently interrupted Redmond's career. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, he pulled out of the opening round of the 400 metres 90 seconds before his heat was due to begin due to a hamstring problem. Prior to the 1992 Olympics, he had undergone eight operations due to injuries. However he seemed to be in good form heading into the Olympics in Barcelona. He posted the fastest time of the first round, and went on to win his quarter-final. In the semi-final, Redmond started well, but in the back straight about 250 metres from the finish, his hamstring snapped. He hobbled to a halt, and then fell to the ground in pain. Stretcher bearers made their way over to him, but Redmond decided he wanted to finish the race. He began to hobble along the track, with pain etched upon his face. He was soon joined on the track by his father, Jim Redmond, who barged past security and on to the track to get to his son. Jim and Derek completed the lap of the track together, with Derek leaning on his father's shoulder for support. As they crossed the finish line, the 65,000 crowd rose to give Derek a standing ovation. However as his father had helped him finish, Derek was officially disqualified and Olympic records state that he "Did Not Finish" the race. But in the public's perception, he had finished and done so heroically."

She is AWESOME! she might compete in the next Olympics at the age of 45...
