I was trying to think of a new topic to blog on when it hit me "What are the first things that come to your mind when you think of 80s". What events pop out in your mind that have left an impression and always take you back to the day.

5. Michael Jackson catching fire during the filming of the Pepsi commercial. I remember hearing about this on the news and being so freaked out.

4. Iran Contra Hearings. I remember seeing bits and pieces of the hearings and seeing Oliver North say "I don't recall" so many times. Then it made fun of at a later time on a news show or SNL.

3. Jessica Savitch's death. Okay, you maybe going "huh" on this one. She was the first person that I remember hearing about her death and being interested. It was purely because her name was Jessica (my name). In 1998 there was a documentary on Lifetime that told the story of how she had become popular in the news industry. I remember watching that and I couldn't keep my eyes off of it. She also had a dog that died with her named Chewey. I got a Yorkie a few months after seeing this and named him Chewey.

2. Jon Erik Hexum's death. I remember when I heard about this our 5th grade class was to go to George Washington Carver's museum the next day. I loved the show Cover Up and he was such a heart throb. I couldn't believe that someone so young and good looking had died. I also remember hearing them say on the news that he had donated his organs. Okay I couldn't get that picture out of my head for a long time.

1. Challenger Explosion. I remember being in my 6th grade Social Studies class when this happened. They had TV's in all of the classrooms so that we could watch the launch. I won't ever forget Mrs. Neet's face when it exploded. That was the first time that I can remember seeing something that became so heavily covered by the news that the entire world was so interested in finding out how something like this could have happened.

There are so many many other events that occured during the 80s, these are the ones that jumped out first at me. I know a lot of them have entertainment value, but a kid really didn't watch the news much to see what other world events were going on. What are the 5 instances that stick out for you?

In no particular order:

(3.) March 1981 - President Reagan is shot and wounded by John Hinckley.

(4.) The "Challenger" space shuttle explodes.

(5.) Someone throws a chair at Geraldo Rivera, and breaks his nose! [Smile]

Events in no particular order:

- Challenger

- Reagan

- Bud E. Dwyer blowing his brains out at a press conference ((even though they blacked out the video when he pulled the trigger it was one of the most surreal moments I ever saw on TV)

- Discovering my grandfather had bought himself an honest to god computer, an Apple II+, in 1981.

- Having cable taken out of our house for a couple years and then magically finding it installed back home one day when I came in from school, and discovering "This weird channel where they play music..but you can see the people playing the music!"...I called up my buddies on the telephone "What channel is this? Its got a big M for a logo?"....and them telling me it was MTV...that was in 81 or 82 I believe, MTV had only been on the air maybe a half year).

(yes kids not everyone had cable back then!)

I totally remember not having cable and it sucking. I still have a few friends that don't have it. I couldn't live without it.
