What was the hardest thing for you to give up/the things you miss the most,when the 80s ended?
I will start of with my hockey haircut,yeah thats right folks..I don`t care what anyone say;-)I loved my mc Gyver hair.I did give it up someplace/somewhere in the mid 90s.But i still miss it..

Hair is definetly missed,. I still have it, but I had a much better fringe cut than now.
I really miss those school days when friday afternoon rolled around and everyone could taste the weekend, the HS dance that night, ordering a pizza, cranking up some bodacious tunes en route to a party and going downtown. Just that rush of youth where everything is possible, no worries about bills, health and aging, just ....limitless fun.

Just to be a bit serious for a moment ;-)As a few comments suggest,i also think we all have some sense of loss/heartache regarding loss of our innocence and youth.Something we can`t never retrieve.But i guess that would apply to everyone,no matter era.I think most people feel the same way,no matter age.
The times when everything was possible.Even the simple believe that music could save the world(live aid 85)The childish innocence,where everything was possible.And the future was there waiting just for us,with limitless possibilities..
But that was before as pink floyd sings:we just became another brick in the wall..It happens to all at some point.
As George Bernard Shaw put it:Youth is wasted on the young.
I feel there is a lot of true in that.I would love to experience my youth,with the knowledge and experience i have today.And maybe even have the possibility to change a few things on the way as well. Things didn`t work out as planned back then during the 90s.I guess that`s how life often works.
But whenever i feel down,i still find a lot of comfort taking a trip down memory lane.And for me that would always be the 80s.
So i`m grateful there are people putting so much work in a web site like this.Giving me that possibility to go back in time,and recall things long forgotten..

The hardest thing to give up from the 80's would have to be my youthful enthusiasm.
The 80's just seemed so larger-than-life.
If the decades were movies, the 60's would be a weird independent film...the 70's would be a bleak drama...but the 80's would be the block-buster action/adventure film with gazillion dollar special effects.
Music to TV to entertainment...everything was "new" then. Today we still live with most of the 80's inventions, so today they are "ordinary".
Music has imploded on itself, TV has imploded...we're still listening to music (and movies) with laserbeams, and home computers that were once reserved for geeky kids like me to play videogames on are now found in every nook and cranny of the home, used by everyone.

One more thing I'd like to add on to what I sort of mentioned earlier: the feeling that everyone was good deep down--with a few overly insane exceptions, who always paid the price for their anti-social tactics again and again and again--and that many problems could be solvable by teamwork and compassion (or because the villain was too stupid that he kept letting them win, but that's another story for another day...). Take a look at any of the animated series we grew up on; except for when the script explicitly called for there to be some kind of discord between them, the heroes all got along just fine and tried to use their talents for the betterment of others. Parents may have complained a lot about the uneducation value of many of these shows, but really they taught subliminally positive messages like this to anyone who'd care to seek them out. Cynics can scoff that this is unrealistic to expect people to come together like that in today's world, where it now seems to be every man for himself by any means he so chooses, and maybe they're right, but that doesn't mean we can't stop dreaming about it. I certainly haven't, and I'm sure many of you haven't either. So when I feel down--thankfully less often these days than I once did--I close my eyes and try and get back to that place where there was genuine peace and harmony, where, like the saying goes, for one brief, shining moment, this was Camelot.

I'm just going to narrow this down to my youth. As far as innocence goes, I'm not going to mourn for something I doubt I ever had and if I did, I never really found any use for it....
Innocence is vastly over-rated, IMO.

I gotta say the music and the "look" are what I miss most. As far as the music goes, I love 80's "Hair Metal" and "Heavy Metal" as well as the 80's "Pop". Sure, today has some decent music, but not much at all. What ever happened to the guitar solo? All I here nowadays is tune your guitar down and whack away at 3 or 4 chords the whole song - talented.
As far as the look is concerned, I miss having my hair down to my a** and the whole denim and leather rocker look. Women were at their hottest in the 80's. They actually cared what they looked like when they went out and did all they could to "impress" us guys. I loved the big hair, teased hair and permed hair, but what I loved most was the crimped hair. To me, that was sexy on women. I must also mention the clothing...It was such a cool look. Where is that today? Wearing baggy clothes with your pants halfway down and *ss hanging out? I liked the tight clothes of the 80's where you could actually see what you were getting.

I miss everything...I was just talking to my mom about this...because she can't believe she'll be 60 tomorrow, and I can't believe that I'll be 40 soon.....
my life was so different as a kid than what my son's life is. Kids today are so "plugged" in to everything.
I spent this afternoon at Gamestop with my son and his best friend....and I can't stand those new video games that are rated M....I miss the days of going to the Arcade-riding on my bike there...to hang with my friends, and we played Pac-Man and Donkey Kong all afternoon...there were no guns involved.
We played outside. Being outside is the thing I miss the most. I constantly built cabins in the woods, we climbed trees, we made clubhouses, we played at the playground, we played in everyone's yard-we played freeze tag and kick the can, and you could stay out all night long, and not get in trouble. We slept outside in the yard in our sleeping bags, and everyone in the neighborhood slept out, and we ran around the streets in our pajamas...nobody cared...nobody said anything.
I remember watching TV every night, because there was always something good on TV. I remember doing so many goofy things on the weekends...and nothing was ever pre planned we just did whatever we thought up doing...and it was always fun.
I remember when we left the keys in our car and our doors were unlocked, and people walked right in our house every night to visit us. We never lived in fear of anything.
I remember my parents talking to all their friends on CB radios, and we had huge picnics with all of the people we met, and we had big Christmas parties...all the holidays were a blast.
I miss it all.....and I try hard to recreate that life that I miss...with my son now....it has been really hard and has taking some time, but I have found an awesome group of girlfriends and we are going and doing things together like I use to do when I was younger...like this fall...me and 3 of my friends are going to go hike the PA Grand Canyon and stay in a nice Inn. I want to get outside more...and do more "nature" stuff...cause that's what I loved as a kid.
The fashion I miss terribly...I miss my denim boots (I had 2 pair of them)...I miss my baggy bigs, my black high heeled boots, and my black satin leotards that I wore with these big V-neck sweaters. I wore dresses all the time, and high heeled shoes to work every day. I always was coordinating my jewelry to my socks to my belt. I had matching outfits I wore to aerobic classes in the 80's, and everything was so cute. I would kill to have some of my shirts back from the 80's.....I had such cute stuff. I had these bootie shoes that looked like high top sneakers but they were more like a bootie, one pair was pink with gray on the inside. I miss my light blue hushpuppy sweater. I miss designer jeans!! I loved Jordache, Sassoon, Calvin Klein, and Zena jeans. I loved this one shirt I had that had short sleeves but it tied at the ends of the sleeves.
I miss friday night videos, cruising town...or walking downtown with my friends. I miss dating back in the 80's....we went to the movies all the time on dates and it was so much fun, or we hung out at the Mall, we went roller skating all the time.
There's food stuff I miss too...1 of the things I miss are Wacky Wafers and Banana Fudge Pops. I miss these candy bars called "Betcha Life", and I miss this pop we use to buy in a glass bottle that was pina coloda flavored. I miss Hubba Bubba raspberry gum.
I miss being in my house I grew up in, in my canopy bed, with my brother in the next room, and my mom and dad down the hall.

Isis, you summed up it up perfect...I did alot of that stuff too (no, not the black satin leotards and high heels). I remember playing kick the can until midnight on weekends when I was about 10-12 years old. Making forts, tree houses, etc. We rarely were indoors. Walking or riding bikes to school which was 3 miles away at 10 years old, not a worry from our parents. Who walks to school these days? They don't know the fun they are missing.

I use to walk home from school every day for lunch...nobody ever ate at school, the only time we ate at school in elementary school was on Sloppy Joe day...and then we had the best Sloppy Joes on the planet that the PTA moms made all morning long. I miss those. I miss walking home from school and stopping at the candy store, and buying swedish fish, and boston baked beans, and tiny tarts, and sixlets and bit o-honeys.
We played outside in the rain and snow ...it didn't matter. We sat down to supper every night as a family, then after my brother and I did the dishes and fed the dogs we would take off on our bikes and go play. We would ride our skateboards at the playground, we had rollerskates that were like sneakers, we played on stilts and pogo sticks, we played with the slip n slide and the sprinkler in the summer and when I got older and we had a pool, everyone came to our house to swim.
I remember never being bored...I'd play in my room...when I was a kid we'd play with our barbie dolls...we'd watch Grease, and recreate the movie and play the soundtrack over and over...I loved collecting all the different trading cards for Grease, and I remember loving the Garbage Pail kids. We played card games all the time. In the summer we played "WAR"-(the card game, and we played UNO, and the Mad Magazine Card game. I had cool magazines to look at like "Dynamite" and "Tiger Beat".
I was an official member of the Hardy Boys fan club. I took gymnastic lessons, oil painting classes, baton twirling, flag twirling, ceramic lessons, I did girl scouts, I went to Good News after school.
In the winter time we went sled riding or snow tubing, or snow mobile riding...we piled up the snow in the yard and dug tunnels all through it.
My brother played with his LEGOs and his matchbox cars all the time, and he loved to watch Smokey and the Bandit and The Dukes of Hazzard.
I remember going to my best friends house every night at 6pm and we watched the old SNL TV show and I would take my LP records to her house, and one of our favorite records was Bob and Doug McKenzie's "The Great White North.".
I remember staying up late to watch Benny Hill.
There is so much I miss about it...it does bum me out at times, because I had so much fun...and I look at people now, and they seem so miserable to me...and I think did they ever have any fun ever?? Don't they miss it too?
Everyone seems like they have to go somewhere major...but I remember when the Carnival came to town in the summer...and that was the coolest thing ever...just to go walk around and get dressed up in your nice clothes to meet up with your friends to ride the Tilt O-Whirl and the Music Express....it was so much fun.
Does anyone else remember half-coins, and how that was th big deal if you were going steady with someone, if your boyfriend gave you their class ring or a set of half coins...that was major stuff. I wonder all the time if things like that have any meaning to them any more, I don't even have a clue what kids do for fun any more.
My son's friend is here right now-spending the night, and they are sitting here playing Guitar Hero...to me it doesn't compare to the things I did at his age.

I really miss the smaller record stores where the owner knew what he was talking about and where you could spend hours flipping through records . There are still a few smaller shops out there that sell vinyl, but they are threatened with extinction because.. obviously they can’t compete with the mega stores. unfortunately, we are living in a time of mega concerns. To me, that just isn’t as appealing as it used to be. Convenient (sometimes) yes, but not charming. Besides, most of the time people who work there don’t even know their classics...

Having cable and being able to find something to watch. As a teenager you and your your friends could sit out at night talking and the only trouble you'd get from the law would be if you or one of your associates was considered an undesirable or you were out after curfew. The women were smoking hot (not saying that the 90s didn't have some foxes you just had to look in the right places)because they made an effort to look good when they stepped out not like nowadays.

Firstly, it's not so much a problem now, but I really missed being able to openly admit to being a Kylie Minogue fan!
Seriously, I miss that we could be more individual back then. I mean in terms of style, almost anything went. I remember in High school, if you wanted to wear 2 watches at once you could and no one cared. You could wear the brightest coloured tshirts and no one batted an eyelid. I remember that in school I had pretty a different hair style nearly every day! And you could wear badges (pins) to support your team or your favorite band or tv show, and no one thought any of it.
I think it's been coming back towards that again lately, so the kids today are really lucky, IMO. But for the 90's and most of the Naughties (as much as I love the last 18 years), it seemed to me to be a fairly conformist era.

I think today...alot of people like to run their mouths...and act like they are "hip" and "trendy"...but I liked when people weren't so phoney. That is probably one of my biggest pet peeves about people in their 20's today. They seem to not have a clue where they fit in.
I was talking to some younger girls the other day, that work for the local paper...I do my advertising through them...and they were saying that they don't drink and "party", so they have a hard time meeting people...because everyone hangs in the bars around here.
I never met anyone in a bar ever in my life. I have rarely even been in a bar. I use to meet people everywhere I went. I met people where I worked....but I met people because I was a big talker.
It seems that everyone now...uses Myspace to meet everyone.

Oh yeah, pettyfan, I knew I was forgetting one of the most important mags- Circus! I still have a few, they are on my bookshelf. I also picked up a couple of metal mags at a flea market that were out of Oregon called Aardshok. I never did get to look through them though.

i agree with almost everything that's been said here.
i'll just add what i miss most, and it's probably because i'm older now, was being young and finding movies on cable tv that i wasn't supposed to see but was able to thanks to Showtime and The Movie Channel airing R rated films all day long. especially when my parents were still in the house. it felt like i was getting something over on them. specifically, i remember seeing Over The Edge, My Tutor, H.O.T.S., The Last American Virgin, The Amityville Horror, countless t-n-a movies, and this great canadian sketch show on Showtime called Bizarre, hosted by John Byner and introducing the comic stylings of Super Dave Osborn. Super Dave was at his best on this show.
