Does anyone know of any good books set in the 1980's?

I'm not looking for a book that tries to give an overview of the entire decade or anything. But I'd like to read some books (preferably autobiographies) about people who grew up in the '80s, were really successful in the '80s, etc.

Basically, I'm just looking for good stories that mainly take place in the '80s and give a good look at the culture of the time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

THis is a good topic. I cannot think of one right off but I have heard of a movie that is supposed to be set in the 80s that was released late last year "The Squid and the Whale". I am not exactly sure what it is about because I haven't heard anyone talk about it or even anyone who has seen it. I think it stars Laura Linney and Jeff Daniels.

I am definitely looking for something good to read like that.

I think most of the books written by Bret Easton Ellis, which are mostly fiction, take place in the 1980's. He likes to focus on the rich kids who grew up in the 80's.

Read Donald Trump's first book, "The Art Of The Deal" (1987). It covers most of his business success from the 70's up to 1987.

Years later, his real estate and Atlantic City casino fortune (as well as his first marriage) would eventually take a dramatic sudden downturn in the early 90's, which led to his bankruptcy and deep debt, though he later rebounded in the late 90's.

I was gonna say Brett Easton Ellis's LESS THAN ZERO but you said "GOOD books".

(Ouch!)

Prince: The First Decade counts too, doesn't it? As well as My Time With Prince (by Dez D.)?

I have a book I bought through PEOPLE magazine called PEOPLE CELEBRATES THE '80s. that ones a lot of fun. It focuses on everything that was hugely popular in the 80s from Brat pack movies, to TV shows like DYNASTY, to toys like Rubiks Cube etc.

I would recommend the book "Little Girl Lost" by Drew Barrymore. If you want to read about what it was like being underage, alcoholic and rocket-fueled in the club scene of the 80s entertainment industry, this book is for you.

For a look at 80s movies, track down a copy of Ron Base and David Haslam's "Movies Of The Eighties". It looks at aspects of the entertainment industry from acting to business and it's loaded with photographs. It was published in the early 90s, so some of the information is out-of-date, but altogether I would recommend the book to any 80s fan.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff
