any fans here? i would say she is my favorite female singer of all time.
for people not familiar with her, i think she may be most famous for her song "This Woman's Work" from the soundtrack to the movie "She's Having a Baby"(also released on her album The Sensual World). that would only be scratching the surface to her incredible music catalog.
my best friend, who in '85 was a boots and braces skinhead(not racist), turned me onto her. i've been hooked ever since.
she was just 17 when she released her first masterpiece, The Kick Inside. supposedly, she was discovered by david gilmour, and he got her her first recording contract. she went on to release four of the greatest albums of the late 70's/early 80's(not including lionheart). my biggest heartbreak is that she is apparently afraid of flying or touring and only toured once in '79/'80. she has a video out called "Live at the Hammersmith Odeon" which captured one of her shows.
she has a distinct voice so i don't know if she is for everyone but i would recommend checking her out.

"Babuska" also sure comes to mind among so many others.she sure had something going on there.Voice/style.I loved her back then.I think one of my very first cassettes for my stereo was an Kate bush tape.

I only know Kate Bush through that "Running Up That Hill" song and her duet with Peter Gabriel in "Don't Give Up".
From what I understand, she has a loyal (though I hate to use the word "cult") following. I hear that she is afraid of flying and heights, and for that reason, doesn't tour outside the U.K. Perhaps that might explain why she doesn't have a larger fanbase.

wuthering heights is an excellent song. good choice.
she has a dvd called The Whole Story that contains all of her videos and some previously unreleased interviews and such. i recommend that and Live at the Hammersmith Odeon, which was a concert performance she did in 1979. you can see on this video how her stage show was more like watching a play.

Over the years I have collected as much as I could of her. Just an amazing artist, her videos were some of the most innovative like Running up that Hill, Cloubursting, Army Dreamers, etc. I mean Tori Amos, Jane Siberry and other were very influenced by her.
It is too bad she doesn't tour, same goes with XTC, but I did notice that Kate played on awards shows and stuff.

"Running Up That Hill" is haunting. Kate's sound is so filled with emotion. She's definitely original.

i'm a bit harsh on Lionheart, but only because the other four albums i mentioned are all perfect. Lionheart is not. i heard that this album was rushed by the record company(go figure) because they wanted to capitalize quickly on the success of The Kick Inside. i think The Kick Inside and Lionheart were both released in the same year.
it's not a terrible album, but the only songs i really like off of it are "Wow", "Don't Push Your Foot on the Heartbrake", "Oh England, My Lionheart", and "Hammer Horror". not that the other songs are bad, they just didn't grab me like her other songs do. i can honestly say that there isn't one song i dislike on any of the other four albums i mentioned.

Ah. I heard it was a rush job too. I also heard it's the album Kate likes least. But some of the songs she put on it were actually written for 'Kick'. I guess I just feel that even a lesser Kate Bush album is hard to criticise (and once again... I love the cover! Not that it makes the music better).

Those are the exact songs I think of when people criticise the album. I also like 'Coffee Homeground' and 'Symphony in Blue'. It isn't as inventive as her other albums, but in a way that makes the whole thing seem cosier to me. My favourite album of hers is actually 'Hounds of Love', but she was operating on a different level at that time (in terms of production).

The Hounds of Love is a masterpiece of music and production. if i had to recommend an album to a first time kate listener, it would be this album, followed by The Dreaming, then either Never For Ever or The Kick Inside. not that this is my ranking of her albums, but The Hounds of Love is quite an achievement and i think it would be the best way to introduce someone to her. you kind of get that production value too with The Dreaming.
i also believe that her albums should be listened to in their entirety, first song to last song. each album has its own flow that i can't really describe. i hate just picking out single songs because i think they may lose something if they are just heard that way. i think The Hounds of Love is the best example of that, though The Kick Inside is also another album in that vain.
