Was this Kim Carnes only popular song. I know that it was the most popular song the year that it came out. It is a shame that she didn't make more music because her voice is really smokey and unique.

The music and lyrics go together so well. I am kind of surprised that with its popularity that we haven't seen it remade, like we have Jessie's Girl.

I just really like this song but I don't have any particular memories to connect it to. It is odd because ususally when a song comes on the radio you remember what was going on in your life when it was popular, maybe I was to young for this one.

Does anyone have any particular memories that they would like to share with us on this one?

I just remember the video was really weird and comedian Bruce Baum did a take off of the song called "Marty Feldman Eyes". The only other Kim Carnes song I remember is "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer" with Kenny Rogers.

She also did a song called "More Love" that made it all the way to #10; so not sure if she could be classified as a true one hit wonder. Sometimes I think they throw that term around a little to liberally.

Actually, Kim Carnes' version *IS* a remake! The original singer was by Jackie DeShannon, who wrote the song. Jackie had several hits in the late 60's and early 70's, including "What The World Needs Now Is Love...Sweet Love", "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", and some others. Jackie's original version of "Bette Davis Eyes" was not a hit, though.

But since you mentioned other people's versions of the song, I went to allmusicguide.com, and came with the following other singers who also did the "Bette Davis Eyes":

* Sonia Davis (a disco version)
* Cover Up (DJ producer team who did a techno version of the song)
* Brad Roberts (in 2002)
* The Countdown Singers (an 80's covers group)
* Marc Moreland (in 2002)
* Marcy Caldwell (in 2001)
* Gwyneth Paltrow (in the 2000 movie "Duets")

No, I haven't heard of these other versions, and I don't think I'd want to either! [Eek!]

My only real memories of the song are these:

(1.) When the song became a massive hit in 1981, the radio stations would play it EVERY 20 F___ING MINUTES!!! At first, it was okay, but then it got truly annoying! [Mad]

(2.) As somebody already mentioned, there was a parody version of it. I haven't heard it, but I'm sure it would be a lot better than the original! [Razz]

(3.) A 'Creem' rock magazine showed a photo of Kim Carnes, wearing sunglasses, and sitting on top of sidewalk gutter grate. The joking caption read something like, "Look, I know how much you hate that song! I hate it too! Hey, don't push me into the gutter just because you don't like it...!" [Smile]

Devolution here,

Steven you are right, I remember honestly being about 6 and that song was on all the time. I think that song and Queen of Hearts by Juice Newton were the first songs I memorized.

We are DEVO
