i have said it before, but the new wave groups and synth groups are my favorites, as far as 80s music is concerned.
depeche mode (martin l. gore is a synth god)-but not tonight, personal jesus, policy of truth, everything counts, so much more..
new order - bizzare love traingle, perfect kiss, shellshock...
missing persons - mental hopscotch, it ain't none of your business, destination unknown, & walking in l.a.
oh yea, there's much more.

I have to go with New Order (Perfect Kiss), The Cars (Heartbeat City) and Depeche Mode (Never Let Me Down Again and Enjoy The Silence). How about Romeo Void though? I think they fall into this category. "Never Say Never" is a hypnotic song...I can just hear that chick singing over and over again... "I might like you better if we slept together...I might like you better..."
Once it gets in your head, there's no getting out.

I like Missing Persons too, another great song by them is "Words"
Also that song by Romeo Void is a true classic from the 80's that didn't get enough appreciation.
"I Got You" by the Slit Enz is a decent song also.

I am a big new wave fan. You might have been able to tell from the name. I also like ABC and the talking heads, but I don't know if they might be considered New Wave (the heads). I have too many one hit wonders to get through everybody, but music is weird. Two people could like 90 percent of the same music, but if your favorite group is different than anothers, a fight might break out.

Would anyone else consider Tears For Fears new wave? "Shout" has kind of got that vibe.
Speaking of Talking Heads, I have been trying to get my band members to like them, but with no success. They will not have it.
....and Has anyone else been told before that Talking Heads are a punk band? I know they started around the punk movement era, but come on.....they are not punk. I've always tried to categorize them, but it is very hard to. They, for the most part, do it all. "Road To Nowhere" is my fav track. My Little Monsters buds will know why.

Eddie, they started at CBGB in NYC, the same place as the Ramones, Joan Jett, etc. Their early stuff I consider punk.

Gotta chime in - Madness, The (English) Beat, B52s, Men At Work, Elvis Costello - these weren't New Wave. Unless by New Wave you mean 'active in the 80s'
Madness, like The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat, and several other bands of the late 70s / early 80s, started a revival of 60s Jamaican Ska that fed out of the mid-70s Punk phase. It was much more street-aware and 'british' than the earlier music, and had that Punk sharpness that opposed the easy-flowing music of Prince Buster and Desmond Decker. Listen to stuff like Nite Club and Little Bitch by The Specials and you'll see what I mean.
Elvis Costello was too broad a musician to be labeled as New Wave - all acoustic, never overprocessed, and certainly not New Wave.
And Men At Work? My least favorite band ever? As a fan of all things new wave (whatever you mean by that) don't even get me started on them....

I think new wave was a generic term that people just threw on a lot of bands in the 80's. Just like a lot of bands were mistakenly labeled as heavy metal because they played music a little louder than most but were not metal by any means.

I think it was the sound that was made, I think pop was a little bit new wave, but anything with Synthesizers (sp) I think classifies, but I think there is a point, that not every band from the 80's is new wave. Most of CT's collection is ok. Golden Earring, I like both of their big songs. Radar Love and Twilight zone.

I thought the meaning of this topic was to tell people your fav. New Wave Band. And before i listed any of these bands, or artist i checked the Internet to make sure....And all of these names i listed was classified under New Wave. I KNEW!!! when i posted these names there was going to be some disagreements. So maybe the Internet site lied to me
True!...Most of these Bands may have started in the Late '70s and called themself "Punk" Bands in the beginning. But when the '80s hit the whole "Punk" thing was dead. And Punk was'nt getting much Radio Air play in the '80s. So they decided to call the Punk Bands from the 70s...."New Wave"(in the '80s)so they would get more radio air play. So that ment that many of these bands had to change there sound From Punk To New Wave, to adapt to the MTV look and sound of the '80s.

New wave comes directly out of the genre of 'punk'. Bands like blondie and the talking heads used alot of punk elements in their music. Bands like the cars were alot more synth based and used elements of many different genres, similar to princes approach, in turn creating a more pop/synth version of new wave. Though the term new wave has been used to describe alot of 80's pop bands, real new wave comes from bands like talking heads and the cars. How do I know this, well i'm a music historian working for rolling stone, so this is all true.

New wave was definitely my genre of preference in the '80s...it was a good morph from the disco era, as well as prep for going alternative in the '90s.
My fiance was a punk band frontman [circa 1978-1982] and then he was a DJ in new wave clubs...his vinyl collection is huge and it's all classic punk and hardcore new wave. So even though I was only familiar with the commercial radio cuts of the above-mentioned bands, now I've gotten into more of the album cuts which are often-times the better songs, at least from the standpoint of true fans.

They're making a movie about Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division who unfortunately committed suicide soon after the release of Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Based on wife Deborah Curtis' 1995 memoirs "Touching From a Distance," the film is in pre-production mode. Currently entitled "Control," Factory Records exec Tony Wilson joins Deborah as executive producer. Anton Corbijn, photographer extraordinaire, will be making his full-length directorial debut and the film's U.S. backers Claraflora, hope to finance the film at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
