I know people have heard me talk about Download before but for those who haven't let me tell you that it's a British Rock Festival that was last year headlined by Metallica.

This year's lineup has started to be announced and whilst most people on here wouldn't care less about

Slayer
Slipknot
Him
System of a Down
Feeder
Garbage or
Velvet Revolver

it has been announced also that BLACK SABBATH (with Ozzy) will be headlining Saturday and that none other than BILLY IDOL will be performing also.

With loads more bands to be announced and the festival expanding to 3 days (10-12 June) I'm going to order my tickets now, any British Rewinders planning on going???

I'm not British, but I'm going. My roomy in college lives in the UK. I'm goin to visit him for 2 weeks, and the Download festival is first on our list. Great lineup thus far...

We can only hope that the props work when Slayer plays Raining Blood...

I'm keeping my eye on the lineup because my kids are wanting to go so looks like I'm gonna have to fork out some serious moolah.

We should have a Rewind get together...

I would go, but I'm a Reading Festival gal and you can rarely afford to do both.

flips the horns....yeaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh

Reading will have Iron Maiden which will definelty be worth seeing but Download have Black Sabbath!!!

If I had to choose, if my life depended on it, it would be Download. The atmosphere there last year was amazing and they've made it bigger and better this year.

Noms [Cool]

ps. I'll probably do Reading as well this year but only if I can buy a day ticket to Maiden as my son is a huge fan and kids can get in free...

Ozzfest here in the U.S. is featuring a co-headlining bill with Black Sabbath AND Iron Maiden. That ****'s gonna rule...

Posted by Noms (Member # 2688) on :

Day 2 of Download here will be an Ozzfest day but we won't get Maiden as they will be in Italy. We'll get Velvet Revolver and Him [Frown] but hopefully some decent bands will be added over the coming weeks...

I think we are getting Anthrax too. There is also the strong rumor of Fear Factory. Saw Anthrax b4, and loved them. Always wanted to see Fear Factory though as I have been a fan of their music for a long time...

That'd be cool if you got a day ticket to Maiden Noms, coz they usually do the days in themes....so on Maiden day, that'll probably be when all the other rock acts are on...I'd definatly come and say hi to you and Noms junior [Big Grin]

Hi Guys, You can bet I'll be there. I'm working it and getting paid, god its a hard life. If anyone wants to meet then come to the main stage first aid post and ask for Dave Webster. I may be very very busy but will find time for any rewinders, And as my mother in law lives in Reading will try and be there too. If I am then we need to meet up for a beer, I know a few good pubs in Reading.

Posted by Cowboy10uk (Member # 117) on :

That said after my shift which should end about midnight there will be a few beers in my tent, which will be in the private first aid camp site, All Rewinders Welcome.

The thing with Download is that you have to attend the whole thing to get the truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. I went last year when it was a two day festival and although I only really wanted to attend the second day for Metallica, Slayer and Machine Head, if I hand't gone on Day 1 I woulda missed The Hives, Cradle of Filth, Iggy Pop etc and that would have been a travesty.

Anyways, I got my tickets now so I'm deffo gonna be there this year from Wednesday afternoon until Monday morning. Sabbath, Slayer and Slipknot will be my preferred acts so far but with at least 50 more bands to be announced its gonna ****ing rule!!!

Ok, Megadeth have been announced for Friday and have stated that it will be their last ever UK show. Now all we need is Motley Crue, AC/DC, Judas Priest and Anthrax...

(never gonna happen I know but I can wish can't I?)

ps. Who the **** are Dinosaur Jr that the organisers are so excited about having booked... [Confused]

Damned if I know, but Megadeath, this show is getting better and better, just hope everyones careful so I don't have to do any work and just sit back and enjoy the music, although I'm pretty sure i'll hear it in the post i'll be working. Although knowing what it was like last year with the pit, I don't think i'm going to have a quiet one. [Big Grin]

From allmusic.com

Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs. Over time, Mascis shed his hardcore punk roots and revealed himself to be a disciple of Neil Young, crafting simple songs that were delivered at a crushing volume and spiked with shards of feedback. Consequently, Dinosaur Jr.'s '90s albums — when the group was essentially a front for Mascis — don't sound particularly revolutionary, even with their subtle sonic innovations, yet their original '80s records for SST were a different matter. On their early records, Dinosaur lurched forward, taking weird detours into free-form noise and melodic soloing before the songs are brought back into relief by Mascis' laconic whine. Dinosaur's SST records laid the foundation for alternative rock's commercial breakthrough in the early '90s, and while the band's profile was raised substantially in the wake of Nirvana's success, they never really became much bigger than highly respected cult figures.

Very surprised to see that Anthrax are back with Joey, considering some of the things they've said about him in recent years! So what happened to John Bush??

And WHY are they lower on the bill than feeble pop t*ssers Him?! [Eek!]

As for the rest of the lineup, it's pretty strong I reckon.......but Bowling For Soup???!! [Eek!]
Comedy videos + big fat bloke does NOT equal good band. Absolute sh1te!!!

Ok, so I'm gonna spread this review out over the next few days just so I don't post one long post...

WED - FRI: AT THE CAMPSITE

Actually no band reviews for today, just an overall impression of the few days camping. I understand that the whole festival / camping thing isn't really done in the USA but I have to tell you, you have no idea what you're missing.

We pitched up camp by 2pm on the Wednesday afternoon and the whole place was in a party mood from the word go. 45,000 camping tickets had been sold and I would estimate at least half of that turned up on day 1.

Total strangers would get together and help each other out carrying kit from the cars, helping put up tents, sharing out beer etc. Many brought stereos along and were blasting out Slayer, Metallica, etc. One brave soul brought his cdlassic children's TV anthems much to everyone's amusement...

Once out tent was up, me and mini noms hit the camp shops for the obligatory programmes, stage timings, t-shirts etc before sitting down for the outdoor cinema screen. Sitting on the grass drinking a cold beer (coke for mini noms) and watching a movie in the hot sun was an special moment.

Fairground rides kept people amused, especially the Dodgems (Bumber cars, whatever you call them) then it was back to the tent for food. Mini Noms excelled himself cooking macaroni cheese on the camp stove and bacon on the disposable BBQ.

The party went on late into the night as more and more people pitched up with their tents to add to the atmosphere.

With plenty of drinking and not much sleep it was amazing that anyone even managed to get up on Friday for the first day of music...

Sorry for the delay...

FRIDAY

After a couple of days partying it's time for the music to begin...

Unfortunately, the organisers decided to experiment by making the extra day a more indie / alt rock day with the metal bands playing on the smaller stages in general.

Mini Noms and I decided to skip the first band on the main stage and headed off to see WWE's Chris Jericho's FOZZY on the 2nd stage. Not particularly good from what we could see or hear which was very little because the tent was packed solid.

Over to the main stage then for WEDNESDAY 13. Now I'm not a big fan of the man or his music but fair play to the guy, he managed to get the crowd going and did have a few catchy tunes.

Unfortunately he was followed by some total dross. JJ72 and THE OTHERS were totally out of place on the Donington stage and didn't the crowd let them know it. Whilst JJ72 at least made an effort, I would rate THE OTHERS as the worst band I have ever seen live. It didn't help that they had obviously been drinking before they hit the stage and were too drunk to even care that they couldn't play their instruments...

Make way then on the main stage for the only band the majority of the Download crowd wanted to see on the Friday...MEGADETH!!!

Mustaine and co were playing their last ever UK gig under the Megadeth monicker and they pulled the first decent crowd of the day. Belting out a greatest hits package and not really speaking to the crowd so they could play more music, for 50 minutes MEGADETH ruled the world (well, Donington at least). Everyone knew they should have headlined today and the crowd made sure the organisers knew it.

MEGADETH gave way to DINOSAUR JR. and the crowds rapidly dispersed to the other 2 stages once more. Mini Noms and I took the opportunity to refuel on food and fluids and checked out The Medal of Honour: European Assault tent and the Nintendo DS tent before returning to the main stage for GARBAGE.

Again, not a big fan, but Mini Noms declared himself to have a huge crush on Shirley Manson and enjoyed their music immensely. I just wanted to go see BILLY IDOL headlining the 2nd stage...

...Unfortunately so did most of the rest of the DOWNLOAD community...with FEEDER headlining the main stage to a poor crowd for a headlining band, everyone flocked to the other 2 stages for BILLY IDOL or NAPALM DEATH. Unfortunately with both tents overflowing, I deemed it unsafe to take Mini NOms in to see either act and only managed to listen to about 10 minutes of each set from outside befeore I gave up and headed back to our tent....from what I've heard since, BILLY IDOL was awesome and I'm annoyed I missed him...

So that was Friday...only a smattering of metal on the main stage and some awesom bands on teh smaller stages where not everyone could get to see them...hopefully the organisers will learn from their mistakes next year and not underestimate the crowd...

NOMS [Cool]

coming soon...OZZFEST SATURDAY....
