UK and American bubblegummers of today are slated to appear. McCartney and Geldof as well, but not all the originals. [Frown]

The bands that have been 'invited' by Geldof to sing on the new version of the classic live aid anthem are extremely varied and diverse. Can't wait for the release, christmas no. 1 for sure!

Listened to a bit of the new version on morning tv and I have to say I don't like the new one at all, , too many pop stars involved with it who have no reccolection of the original track or why the original track was created (someone had to tell them).

But if the proceeds of the recording are going to a good cause then all is well as far as I'm concerned.

I always liked Let Them Know It's Christmas a lot better than We Are the World.

I loved the song Do they Know it's Christmas.

I loved the words, I liked all the people involved. They all seemed like they were doing it for the cause not the publicity.

Anymore, even though the money will go to benefit someone that needs it-you hope so anyway, for what it cost to make the song, they could just donate that and skip the whole everything.

But, what would be cool is if they got the 80's groups back again to do another song, what's wrong with that idea, there's lots of them left, and alot that weren't in that one.

I would love to see some of the bands like REO Speedwagon, Journey, Styx, Foreigner, Loverboy and 38 Special, there's so many...that could make a good song.

Who needs these new bunch of people that can't even sing, the new celebrities look worse and they are young, than the old ones do, and they have aged.

I would love to see Rick Springfield and Eddie Money, and so many others, get together. They are all still around.

There are so many charities that need help, people don't have to just wait until Xmas to do a fund raiser.

Apparently, Bono will be singing the same line in this new version as in the original ("and tonight thank God it's them, instead of you").

I read somewhere that there already was a remake around 1990 with Kylie Minogue in it? [Confused]

Of course it's always worth to do something for a good cause, but WHY can't they come up with a new song, instead of making a bad remake of the original?? [Confused] [Frown]

Who knows? I loved the original through and through myself.

If he can sing, and if they know where he is now (at last check he'd been arrested on dubious sounding charges just after he stopped by my campus to give a speech on the subject), I'd think they might want to consider Manute Bol for the project. After all, he's done more to advance the cause of the crisis in Sudan that anyone else, and he knows for a fact how bad it is in there. If he can't sing, maybe they could have him do an intro speech or something.

Stuff like this annoys me so much i dont even have the words to describe the hate it builds up inside! i know its for charity and a lot of good will come of it! that im all for, and i think more things like that should be done more often! but i dont know how some of todays new so called pop stars have the ordasity to rate themselves as even half the people the original lot from the 8os were!! i mean i think theres probably no more than even a handful of the new lot that even write there own songs, i guess to them this is just another song to put their celebrity status up a notch in the "ok" magazines and "teen pop worldss". im glad theres still music out side of the mainstream, i guess its not all bad, but if there wasnt anything else i think its safe to say we'd all be going to hell! hah hows that for livid!

Ok well I guess I don't mind it being remade since it would be for charity right? right! But no one will ever be able to top the original. The 80's version is excellent. That was actually the first video I have ever seen Sting in and due to that video is the entire reason I love him today. He is hott!!! [Razz] That is is best looking video and thanks to that I started listening to the Police and Sting on his own. Plus isn't Dan Ackroyd in that video as a singer?!? I always found that quite interesting.... hmmm....

Today, my DJ prep said that the lead singer of The Darkness already recorded the line Bono was supposed to sing, and it sounds so good that the producers want to keep it like it is and have Bono come in to record a different line...

And Bono's agents have refused!

Have any of you U.K. Rewinders got the inside scoop?

That's about it. They got Bono in to re-record it.

I HATE the way they keep calling it 'Band Aid 2' when it's clearly Band Aid 3. No matter how bad 2 was, that's no excuse for writing it out of history. They’ve recently tried to cover themselves by calling it Band Aid 20.

When the original Band Aid was recorded, almost all of the people on it were international stars (including the US). So the record had true international appeal. Half the people on this version aren't stars anywhere other than the UK (which is part of what made Band Aid 2 so awful, and why the press are semi-ignoring it).
Another problem is the line up as a whole; what made 'We Are The World' seem weak in comparison to Band Aid (apart from the dripping sentiment) was the mixture of vocalists who should never have been allowed on stage together. Bruce Springsteen is great, Cyndi Lauper is great, Dylan is great, but not on the same record!

The fact that these guys shouldn't be sharing a stage, along with the rap (Dizzee Rascal?!). Really damages the whole thing for me.

And as Wiz mentioned, the musical ignorance displayed by some of the 'artists' involved who seem to never have heard of Band Aid, is staggering. They play it every year! It's tied to the largest concert ever! These people have clearly been trying so desperately to become famous that they haven't bothered listening to the radio (or music in general). I don't care how old they are. If you have ears, you hear all the Christmas records every year. The fact they don’t know it says a lot about them.

It's for charity, great, I'm all for it. But that doesn't mean the record is any good. Despite some now dated sounding instrumentation, at least the original had a good atmosphere and felt sincere, maybe because none of the artists had anything to prove career-wise. This new one just sounds weak.

'Band Aid 2'? Not according to my calculations. ‘Band Aid 20’? Whatever. I’ll give some money to charity, but I’ll listen to the old version this Christmas. And the government of Sudan will still be corrupt.

Rant over.

As I remember it, the original "Do They Know It's Christmas?" song was done by mostly U.K. performers.

The only U.S. performers involved in that song were Kool & The Gang (who happened to be touring the U.K. at the time of recording), and Jody Watley (who just left her group Shalamar, and a few years prior to hitting it big with her own solo career). To my knowledge, those two were the only Yank performers in that song.

For info on both Band Aid and Band Aid 2, click here:

And type in "Band_Aid_(band)" in the search engine.

(I tried to link the URL here, but it won't accept parentheses in the message board!)

In 1986, the anarchist pop-music band Chumbawamba came out with their debut album called "Pictures Of Starving Children Sell Records" that openly criticized the whole cynical attitude toward these charity-pop music events during the mid-80's.

Sorry, my fault. When I said 'international stars' I meant that the people on it sold well internationally, rather than being from lots of countries. When I said 'including the US', I meant that they sold well in the US too.

Actually, I think that everyone who took a lead vocal line had at least one #1 hit single stateside: Paul Young/Sting/Simon Le Bon/George Michael/Boy George/Bono. Yup. That's not bad on one charity pop record!
