Devolution here,

 -

So I was on Easter Break and the day before Easter with nothing to do my wife and I decided to take on "The Stand" 6 hours of Stephen King, which makes for a very long book and what felt like a longer Mini Series.

Now I remember it being older than it was, probably confusing it with "IT". But nonetheless it's 1994, and much as I remembered, the first episode was, in fact, really good. The Plague - as the episode was called showcased all of the main characters in different parts of the U.S. that were dying off by a man made disease. It was very tense and extremely jumpy for its time. It was a great way to real the viewer in for the rest much like "The Walking Dead".

The three episodes after this anchored by Molly Ringwald, Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe, and assorted other "OK" characters like Shawnee Smith (Post Summer School, Pre SAW) were ok at best, I mean the God vs the Devil sub plot might be the main context but the problem is that it just never really takes off, the special effects aren't much better in 94 then they were in V.

Much like many other Stephen King TV movies, they just really don't cut it, I don't think I would ever need to watch it again, and the topics and characters aren't great enough to worry about.

My bottom line is that it's a 5, The first episode is an 8, but each episode steadily decreases the value of the movie and it's never as scary as you would ever have liked it to be.

Maybe it wasn't supposed to be, but it's no excuse.

Watch it only if you are bored.

i have to share this story no matter how dumb it may sound, but when i seen ed harris in this show where his character met his demise and wrote guilty on his shirt, i thought of the part on the movie lets go to prison where the jury forman said they found the defendant "quilty" and i started to laugh to the point where i almost peed myself

i guess i thought it would be funny if someone thought he wrote quilty on his shirt like that and they would be confused as to what the hell that meant

I read The Stand (and a ton of other King novels) in the 80's, but like IT, I didn't really think they could pull off a movie of it.

I don't know if anything is scarier than what your mind can conjure with the right words/scenario.

I was going to attempt reading/re-reading the uncut version of the book, but the prospect was too overwhelming [Roll Eyes]

Some people claim they can read books in a few hours. I think The Stand might prove them wrong.

PS: Devo - that pic is nothing more than hubris.
