It is on next Saturday on TNT. I actually only saw it once, at the Drive-In, but I remember I liked it. I think I want to watch it again, what did anyone else think of it?

This is another film (in a fairly long list) that makes me cry. The adversity and the fears that Truman fights against in the boat to escape his world is at once heartbreaking and inspiring.

I'm a massive fan of Jim Carrey and I think this is the finest work he ever done, even better than "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

PS... other films that make me cry are -

Edward Scissorhands
Steel Magnolias
Secrets and Lies

The end of TRUMAN SHOW made me cry the first time I saw it.
I watched it a few months ago and I think knowing how it was gonna end ruined it for me. It's one of those movies you can watch once.
I really liked a more subdued Jim Carey. When he's all crazy I start to twitch.

Ultimately this was a sad film. Can you imagine your whole life being a lie??? Never knowing anything about who you could potentially be but having yourself steered in a certain direction. YUCK!!!!

I liked this film, but it isn't one that I would be able to watch over and over again. It is one of those ones that you kind of have to be in the mood for.

I was watching it...and I forgot so much about it.

It came out in 1998, and it is weird that now it doesn't seem so impossible. The fact that he grew up over that many years on tv didn't seem possible for that time period...but now with so much reality tv...and watching people's every move, and people using webcams to show them in their own homes doing stuff...we have become obessessed with watching other people live their lives...which is scary to me...that people watch other people live their life...instead of going out and living their own.

But, the thing that is really sad about The Truman Show... is that, not one person...but the girl he liked, ever thought this isn't right...to do to a person...you saw those old ladies with all his memorbilia on the wall....and they were "fans" because they watched his life....which was a total lie, so that to me is really what Reality TV is today...it is nothing different from this movie.

It is a bunch of "actors" put on tv to entertain people with ordinary every day things we all already do...but they just have to do things more dramatic and over the top to make it interesting, but after so long...isn't it the same old stuff??

There are alot of modern and past sitcoms as well who do this, not just reality tv...

No way....Tell me how these shows are anything alike:

Grizzly Adams
The Munsters
The Beverly Hillbillies
I Dream of Jeannie
F-Troop
Bewitched
The Bionic Woman
Wonder Woman
Alice
All in the Family
Facts of Life
Different Strokes
The Man from Atlantis
Charlies Angels
Happy Days
Laverne and Shirley
Three's Company
Eight is Enough
The Greatest American Hero
The A-team
Miami Vice
Dallas
The Incredible Hulk
Streethawk
Fantasy Island
Gilligan's Island
The Brady Bunch
The Waltons
CHiPs
BJ and the Bear
Good Times
The Muppet Show
Solid Gold
The Dukes of Hazzard
Starsky and Hutch
Little House on the Prairie
Baretta

I just named just a few off the top of my head...but absolutely none of them are anything alike...they are completely different...different time periods, they are so totally unique , each one of them, and the characters were totally different from each other, some of these shows were about animals, some had puppets, some had all women, some were super heros, some were action, some were comedies...but none of them were even close to being the same thing, everyone worked completely different jobs, had a completely different setting...like The Waltons took place during the depression, Happy Days was in the 50's, Grizzly Adams was in the mountains.

Reality TV is a bunch of strange people thrown together, to see who screws around with who, and who gets plastered the worst, and who can be the biggest loser out of the group, and who is the most disfunctional, and who can scream the loudest, and who can make a bigger fool out of themselves.

I don't see the similarity.

So I know, do we consider game shows exempt from the reality TV tag, even though they technically are?

All the shows in that list are pretty much the same thing give or take the events and time periods. Individuals acting and reacting in a given environment. Just like reality tv...

Gee, that sounds exactly like "The Gong Show" or "The $1.98 Beauty Show"! [Smile]

Both of those shows got hammered by TV critics during the day.

I don't know about the $1.98 Beauty Show...but I'll take The Gong Show over Reality TV any day of the week.

They should put a gong on some of these shows....that's how I feel when I see 2 seconds of one...I feel like taking a hammer and smashing the TV....a Gong would maybe be a better route to go.

The reason those shows probably did get hammered in their day...is cause critics had quailty tv to compare it to..and knew what good actually was...now it is the reverse....they don't know good any more cause everything looks like The Gong Show.

They are all the same regardless. I can't help the fact that you can't make the connection. Like Oprah is just like Donahue, Sally Jessie, Ricki Lake, etc...All the same crap but with different hosts...

Now I’m not an expert on “women’s TV” but no way is Oprah the same as Ricki Lake. I like Oprah as she was the ONLY American-mainstream media personality (besides Michael Moore), to show her audience the infamous news footage of Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein (after selling him chemical weapons to use against Iran in 1987). Ricki Lake, as far as I recall, never quite got beyond the ‘my mans better than yo man ….’ phase.

Did she cut and paste her footage like Moore did the news clippings shown in Fahrenheit 911 or was it bona fide? I don't put much credibility in Moore as he dreams up fables and makes millions off of them. He's more along the lines of Dr. Seuss. He's in the same rankings as Oprah though. I'm glad you brought him up...

Never saw the episode Motley, but I have seen the CNN report in question and there’s nothing cut & paste about it, or the sinister facts that accompany it. I’m neither a Moore lover nor a hater, but found his books (particularly ‘Dude, Where’s My Country?’) to be highly informative in terms of the verifiable evidence and facts they presented.

And as for making money off his documentaries, why would anyone expect him to work for free? You make a valid point about Moore as self-promoter, and he may not be as good as people like John Pilger, Alex Jones, Tony Benn, Naomi Klein, Tariq Ali, Mark Thomas, George Galloway et all, but Moore’s one-man against the corporate media machine, a man whose message “is for the ‘WWE’ crowd”, and thus he has to entertain (with quips and set ups--not to everyone's taste) as well as inform (with irrefutable facts & evidence--which are true no matter who reports them). In short, its more about the message, then it is the messenger.

I disagree. He doesn't give 2 s h i t s for the causes he makes movies about. Folks have been doing the one man/woman agaisnt the corporate media mchine for years. The fact that people are actually ignorant enough to believe his supposed findings is scary enough in itself...
