I was in Wal-Mart today and saw this on DVD for $5.50. I never watched it when it came out but I don't mind Kristy so I bought it. Am I going to like this or does it suck? Tell me before I open it.

Cindy here is my take on it. The original movie was not very good, but the series it spawned was awesome. [Cool] So to pay homage to the show, you at least need to start with the movie.

I would have never thought I would have liked the series, but once you start watching, in order is important, you'll get hooked. I love how each show linked to the next and the inside jokes grew as the series matured. Yes it's based on a hokey movie and actually a hokey premise of killing vampires while trying to be a teenager, but the character development in the series was excellent. [Cool]

I'm sure some other Rewinders would agree. So watch the movie because it was only $5.50, but pick up the series if you get the opportunity.

I agree about the Buffy series. I always thought it would be stupid but a friend made me watch it and I got hooked! Truly well written, tongue in cheek material. The movie may be a disapointment (in its total cheesiness) but it IS the original... so pop some popcorn and enjoy your $5.50. [Smile]
To truly appreciate it, however, you need to see the series!

Definitely agree that the series is MUCH better.

Here's what I think: The movie is very confusing as far as it's history (the watcher doesn't make much sense--and when he does it's really lame) and the vampires are so over the top that they have you rolling your eyes more than actually laughing. Kristy Swanson plays her role excellently, and Luke Perry looks very good and does what he can with the lines he has. Paul Reubens is one of the few hightlights of the film and is really fun to watch. The principal (I think he was played by Joss Whedon, who went on to create the TV series) is also pretty funny, but has little screen time. My favorite character is Benny, played by David Arquette, but he was given so little screen time that you didn't have much time to enjoy him. The villain doesn't impress, has bad lines (and not in a funny way), and the music for the fight scenes doesn't really fit.

Fun fact: Seth Green (he played Oz on the Buffy series) had a cameo as a vampire in the original movie that got cut out, but can still be seen on the back of the video box (I think the DVD, too.).

This is really the first talk that I have even heard about anyone liking the series. It is one of those that I have just stayed away from, like Star Trek, never ever could get into that one.

I remember having to watch TREK late night when we only had 3 channels because nothing else was on.

Anyway--back to Buffy. I actually kind of liked the movie, I remember seeing it at the theater, I believe it was the first role that Paul Reubens was in after his indecent explosure rap in the early 90's. I might have to check out the show to see if it is any good.

Paul Reuben's death scene in the film is hilarious. It was totally adlibbed and Joss Whedon thought it was so hysterical and ridiculous he had to leave it in.

Buffy's history changed quite a bit between the movie and the series. In the first episode of Season one, mention is made of Buffy burning down the school gym. This didn't happen in the movie, but it was in Joss's original script so when he began the tv show, he kept to his original idea.

I love how in the series, they occasionally have flashbacks to the early Buffy days of the film era.. eg we discover that Angel is watching when Buffy is first approached by her watcher and told of her destiny.

Thanks for starting this topic Cindy. For the fans of the series....what were your favorite episodes?

Here's a link that lists all the shows if you want to refresh your memory:

Buffy Episodes

My favorites were:

"The Wish" - My all-time favorite show, dealt with what Sunnydale would be like if Buffy wasn't around just yet.

"Becoming" - The Season 2 Finale...cool stuff.

"Halloween" Episodes - where they turned into their costumes and the one with the house they were trapped in by their own fears.

And of course "Hush" - because it was so original.

How about other Buffy Fans? [Cool]

Yeah the movie you can pass on....it's ok and I own it...lol...oh my Lupa, Seth Green is on the back cover, neat info!

But the series is awesome!!!!!

It is the humor....it's so well written and the character development. Episodes were so creative each one a story in it's own. I agree with Valley about the Halloween ones and "Hush" is a great fav of mine. The show makes me laugh so hard quite often. I loved the musical too. Anyway i'm not ashamed to say i'm a Buffy fan.....cause those of us who know, know!!!! [Big Grin]

"Hush" seems to be a favorite of nearly everyone because it was so different. It definately gave me the biggest fright out of any episode.

My other faves are -

"The Body"

"Once more with feeling"

"Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered"

"I only have eyes for you"

For $5 it's worth seeing...

However, the tv show is indeed 200x better.
