A friend of mine is going to let me borrow this Charlton Heston flick as he just purchased it on Blu-Ray. Anybody saw it? Good or bad? I've heard both......

Its good. But then again I like 70s movies and Charlton Heston (who was my older sister's first childhood crush after she saw him in a loin cloth in PLANET OF THE APES!)I know there have been several variations of this story (LAST MAN ON EARTH which I have not seen yet and I LEGEND which Ibegrudgingly sat through and ended up enjoying in spite of myself (and a horrible ending) but since is the first one that I saw this is whatever I think of when i think of that whole Last Man On Earth plot-line.

The Chuck Heston version is much better than the cartoon Will Smith effort. The book bases the story in 1977 so isn't too far out. To get a deserted LA was nigh on impossible and couldn't rely on computer trickery to produce the desired effect, but apart from this sticks closer to the Matheson story. Have yet to see the Vincent Price version.

The Omega Man came out on Blu Ray this year, that is, in the US. I have put it on my review list for next week. Has anyone seen the Blu Ray disc yet?

I liked this one, had some blaxploitation elements running through as well.

The Charlton Heston film is very much a child of its time. Which is no a bad thing. I liked its liberal lines and situations. The use of Black Power, which was fashionable at the time, works well. For a civilization that has derailed, it still looked kind of clean to me. They could have gone much farther, more destruction, more visible chaos. I have not seen the Will Smith version. I am about to see The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price. It is very interesting, being able to compare a sixties Italian production version, a Hollywood seventies version and then a modern day re-enactment of the same novel. I will keep you posted on this.

I watched it on Blu-Ray (great picture by the way)and although I like Heston I wasn't that impressed. It wasn't even really scary to me. I think I'll check out The Last Man on Earth to see if it's any better.......
