I just saw a part of Tommy Boy...where they are driving down the road listening to this song by the Carpenters, and singing their heads off, and bawling....I loved the Carpenters...and this was a great song, I think songs like this are songs that alot of people love but are afraid to admit it.

Don't you remember you told me you loved me baby?

Long ago, and, oh, so far away
I fell in love with you before the second show.
Your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear, but you're not really here.
It's just the radio.

Don't you remember you told me you loved me baby?
You said you'd be coming back this way again baby.
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby.
I love you, I really do.

Loneliness is such a sad affair, and I can hardly wait to be with you again.
What to say, to make you come again?
Come back to me again, and play your sad guitar.

That song is also featured in one of the WAYNES WORLD movies....but I cant remember if it was Part One or Part Two.

My sister is a HUGE CARPENTERS fan and loves that song.

I only like a few songs by them. They are "too sweet" for me.

ISIS:

That Carpenters song you mentioned is called "Superstar", from 1971. It was written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett (of Delaney & Bonnie, in the late 60's).

For more info on the song, click below:

Oh...so I got the title wrong...that's what came up though when I put those words in to search for it.

I wonder if I have it and don't even know it...I am going to go look on my CD right now, and see if I can find it!!

I'm a massive fan of the Carpenters. I don't find them too sweet (except for Close to you, perhaps). I kind of think when you listen to the lyrics that it's rather poignant - there was so much bad stuff going on behind the scenes (Karen's anorexia and failed marriages, Richard's drug addiction, not to mention a domineering mother...) - it's amazing they were able to continually bring out such positive love songs.

Having said that, one of my favorites of their songs has nothing to do with any of that, it's kind of a silly song (and a cover version) - "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft", which was the anthem for "World Contact Day"....

In your mind you have abilities you know
To telepath messages through the vast unknown
Please close your eyes and concentrate
With every thought you think
Upon the recitation we're about to sing

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary, most extraordinary craft

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary, most extraordinary craft

You've been observing our earth
And we'd like to make a contact with you

We are your friends

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants and interplanetary ultra-emissaries

We've been observing your earth
And one night we'll make a contact with you

We are your friends

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary, quite extraordinary craft

Please come in peace we beseech you
Only a landing will teach them
Our earth may never survive
So do come we beg you
Please interstellar policemen
Won't you give us a sign
Give us a sign that we've reached you

With your mind you have ability to form
And transmit thought energy far beyond the norm
You close your eyes
You concentrate
Together that's the way
To send the message
We declare World Contact Day

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary craft
Calling occupants of interplanetary, most extraordinary craft

Ahhh

Calling occupants
Calling occupants
Calling occupants
Calling occupantsCalling occupants of interplanetary, anti-adversary craft

The Carpenters are a guilty pleasure of mine and this song and this movie scene that Isis described is what awoke my feelings towards them and made me start listening to their other stuff as well. I guess my mom spinning all their 33 1/3s of theirs had some effect on me afterall besides all the KISS records I used to listen to.

Wow. KISS and the Carpenters! Talk about a totally different music scene! But who'd ever thought the Carpenters would have troubles with substance abuse as much (if not more than) KISS ever did?

Well more substance abuse then Gene and Paul but I'd say Peter and Ace had more substance abuse.

Peter and Ace did LOVE to induldge didnt they?! It does suck that all of that took a band on top of their game down so far, so fast. Nevermind that though, like Sammy's Mom, mine used to spin those Carpenters like no other. I started buying all my KISS on 8 track so at least I wouldnt have to fight with her anymore......until she realized how ingenious the 8 track was, then the war really began.

Ruben Studdard sang this one on American Idol in Season 2. There was something about him singing this that totally made me think it was a different song. He made it his own!!
