Watched this awesome Australian coming of age movie yesterday.
The film was directed by Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Her Alibi etc.) and is based
on the 1979 novel Puberty Blues, by Gabrielle Carey and Kathy Lette,
"Debbie and Sue are two 13-year-old girls from the Sutherland Shire in Sydney, Australia.
The girls attempt to create a popular social status by integrating themselves with the "Greenhill gang" of surfers." (Wikipedia)

Nell Schofield and Jad Capelja are the lead stars and it´s fun to watch their teenage life.

 -

Surfing, beach scenes, school scenes (public bathroom scenes!), parties, drive-in,
arcades, a band called Breakers playing in a club, smoking, drinking and... well, you know what [Wink]
This movie has it all.

 -

Tim Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House) wrote three songs for the movie
and you can also hear few nice hard rock tunes.

If you haven´t seen this great movie (this didn´t do very well in the US and i don´t even know if it was released here at all)
you should check it out asap!

Puberty Blues trailer

Special thanks to LoverswithCassie.

The guys are watching a movie called "Thirst" in the drive-in so i´m also gonna check it out next.

Glad that you liked it, aTomiK, the pleasure is all mine.

I own copies of the novel together with the DVD, too.

Interesting news, KISSMAD.

I see that Claudia Karvan plays Judy Vickers, Debbie´s mum.
I loved Claudia in The Big Steal

Cool Australian film from the early 80s. Hard to imagine an American teen film featuring such casual hard drug references (well, maybe Less Than Zero, but that had a pretty clear condemning message in it).
I was watching this recently, and was struck by the social realism of it, with the regional dialogue of the time ("rooting machine"), and the way it could have quite easily swung into a late 70s style downbeat slasher film. I was also wondering that some of the young people featured in it, probably aren't even that old now (see Jennifer Connelly today as a smokin' hot 41 year old [Big Grin] ).

Doc74, have you got the novel and if so, then have you read it? And what did you think of it?
