Film stock and camera that was used in the 80's. The writing has to be exceptional almost a period piece so that the film doesn't turn out like a 2010 movie with costumes and some dialogue to mimic 80's feel. Actors 'train' live in a sound stage/set with nothing but 80's news/movies/documentary/radio on.

Also 80's music that didn't get alot of play, that works for the scenes they're used in, not just somthing picked at random from greatest hits cds

There would have to be at least one scene (5 minutes or longer) set in an arcade. Only the games of the 1980s could be used (i.e., Pac-Man, Q*Bert, Galaga, Qix, etc.) and other '80s hallmarks like bright neon signs and jukeboxes would have to be present.
On a side note, although I enjoyed Hot Tub Time Machine, I was kind of disappointed that there were virtually no arcade scenes. It couldn't have been that hard to find a Centipede or a Ms. Pac-Man and put it in the ski resort where the movie takes place.

Our two characters have just met or whatever. We need to care about them, but we don't have time for protracted sequences showing the development of their relationship, so its all done in 3 minutes of montage, set to music, showing them out and about, on dates etc.

And raise you
Girls working out in aerobics stretchy gear, complete with leg warmers. Whether they are dancing or working out, or both. Ex Flashdance, Red Heat, Perfect
Big dance numbers, ex. Footloose, Doctor Detroit….
Rock song named after the movie to play at credits. Ex. My Science Project, Doctor Detroit
Zany larger than life characters, with larger than life actors. Ex Brother Theodore “The burbs” Mr. Igo “Innerspace”
Pale white city street lights ex. Cat’s Eye, Into the Night
Hot girls who are wild, uninhibited , non super model girls, drinkers and drug takers “reasonably that is” and aren’t in your face about it.
The heroization of common, or mundane jobs and the people who work them.
also I like the type of ending credits that shows stills from the movie, of certain chracters doing various things through out the film whilst the credits roll over top of them, ex. Fletch, My Science Project

Must have a passing shot of a vintage ghetto blaster, either strategically placed in a main characters room, or an extra walking by the shot in a downtown area. Someone listening to a vintage walkman and missing out on important events in the movie (ie someone getting killed, a stranger walking around in their house, cries for help). And unfortunately at times, these vintage electronics need to be demolished...Arnie tramping on the headphones in Terminator, Johnny busting up Ali's beautiful blaster on the beach...these are tragic images I can't seem to get out of my head....

I just thought of one more essential thing to include in an '80s flasback movie: those old Coca-Cola and Pepsi vending machines that had the huge buttons you could press to get a can or bottle of soda. I still see those all the time whenever I'm up in New Hampshire or northern Massachusetts, usually outside bars, convenience stores, gas stations, and other places that are still "behind the times." (Which isn't always a bad thing in my book!)

TGP, coke machines like off 'Making the Grade' where you can do Eddie Keatons straw trick.
I have only ever seen one machine like that. It was back in the 80's at my dads work.
