Hi all. New to the forum, been using the site for great information. I found that there were a lot of 80s movies I missed, or was too young to watch, or just don't remember watching, and I wanted to see them. So I decided to just watch it all. I am starting with my first project called 100 weeks of 80's movies. I am attempting to watch the top 50 box office releases from every year of the 80s. I started with #50 from 1980 and am working my way to #1, then moving on to the next year. You can follow my progress at http:\\100weeks80sflix.blogspot.com Feel free to leave me comments on your thoughts on the film I'm watching. And I have no problem with differing opinions, so just let me know if the movie I hated is so great I should try it again. As I said I am starting with the top 50 of each year. As time permits I also plan to do "bonus" films. Those that didn't make the top 50 at the box office but were released that year. So please let me know if you have any I should catch from 1980 that couldn't make the top 50. Thanks all! And thanks to the site for all the great info on many of the movies I will be watching!!

I bet you'll find that you've seen some of the movies but don't remember seeing them before. Also, I bet you'll learn where some of the sayings/phrases etc, you've heard throughout your life came from.
I don't know how old you are, but, judging by your review of Prom Night I would guess you are in your 20s? Part of watching 80s movies is for the "feeling", the "nostalgia", during this decade. You really have to try to put yourself into an 80s mindset to truly appreciate some of the more "cheesy" 80s flicks.
Going strictly by the top 50 per year you will miss many treasures... Make sure you go back and check some of them out.

jdocster beat me to it! A lot of movies just have a great nostalgia factor. In many cases, even Prom Night (which I had never seen until recently), can be quite enjoyable since they just have the 80's vibe that you remember. The Nude Bomb is also a fun one for me since I used to watch Get Smart on nick and remember renting the movie in the 80's.
One of my first thoughts was: a lot of my favorites are nowhere near the top 50 in the box office!
One of the best things this site can help you do is find a 'new' 80's movie that you've never seen before but end up absolutely loving.
Your plan is an interesting one. I just took a look at the list for 1980 here and I haven't seen quite half of them. The thing is, I don't personally have a yearning desire to seek out the other ones any time soon (I guess we all have our favorite types of 80's flicks and mine tends to veer toward the less mainstream). 3 of the movies are re-releases in any case. When I look at the other 80's years top 50 lists, I find I have seen most of them though
I commend your efforts and look forward to hearing your general thoughts as you progress.

It would be funny for you to put the movie that you are watching that night up. Most of us could give reviews on them, but you would have to see how your opinions after seeing these now, would be different after we saw them 20+ year ago.

Thanks for all the comments guys. To answer a few questions... I am 29, so I was born in 1980. Therefore the nostalgia, won't really take effect for a few years when I start to see a lot more movies I remember. Also, i try NOT to take all of these films too seriously. I do in fact love many bad movies, some are just TOO bad. But I think I've had too many film crit/theory classes not to be critical. And some of these movies really should be taken seriously. Many film students look at the 80's as some of the worst film-making ever. But honestly even those bad ones were some of the most open and daring pieces. And others are just amazing films, like close Encounters of the Third Kind. Anyway. Here is my schedule for next week if anyone wants to play along! Jdocster, it is a sickness we have isn't it? I too am up there, but not quite. I am 44 out of 50. I agree with Wolfman, the ones I haven't seen, I had not planned on ever sitting down for, but tell me if I am truly missing something on these: The Jazz Singer, Tess, Cruising, Honeysuckle Rose, Rough Cut or The Hunter . I would really be interested in what you have to say about any of these and appreciate it!

Welcome to The Rewind! I think you will find lots to like on this website...
- The Jazz Singer. I liked it, and, watched it a bunch of times on HBO. It has a good story-line, and, it's one of the few movies that Lucie Arnaz acted in. If you like Neil Diamond as a singer it's a treat.
- Tess. Honestly, it's a bit too much chick-flick for me. My sister loves it...
- Cruising. Not really my type of film. I saw parts of it, but, there is too much homosexual action in it for me. To each his own. Didn't work for me though.
- Honeysuckle Rose. I really like Willie Nelson and Dyan Cannon. This movie never really clicked with me. I saw it on HBO several times but I can't recommend it.
- Rough Cut. Another late night HBO movie. I have always liked Burt Reynolds and, Lesley-Anne Down was very hot in the 70s and 80s. I remember it as a light hearted predictable fun movie.
- The Hunter. I loved this movie in the 80s! I must have seen it 50 times... Steve McQueen is very good in this movie. He plays a bounty hunter in this movie that's based on a real life bounty hunter.

Thanks, that helps a ton! It pretty much falls in line with what I had already thought of them from what I had read or know about them. The Jazz Singer and to a little lesser extent were ones I always knew I should go back and watch at some point. The others I know are from such a great time in movie, but wow, I just don't think so...Thanks again and what a great site! This is the first time I have been on a message board and what an awesome subject...Love it!

I think you're right about Honeysuckle Rose. It is a country chick flick. I like Willie and Dyan but the movie just isn't my thing.
