since I haven't had a computer i've been dying to ask if any of you saw this on Encore??

It's a documentary about John Hughes by some Canadian film students.

Site

They had a great ideas and some great interviews with stars from Hughes movies....but something is missing? I almost thought it's the fact they are too young themselves.....but they would argue to that Hughes movies appeal to all ages and I would agree. They choose to fill in interviews with teenagers and have them explain why they love his movies.

but the parts of the cast themselves hunting down Hughes and trying to get an interview with him were just boring and pointless haha

I'd love to know what anyone else thought?

I watched this a couple of weeks ago with a friend of mine who is also a big fan of John Hughes movies, and neither of us liked it that much.

I loved the interviews with the cast/crew that Hughes worked with (especially Judd Nelson's), but I could have done without the high school students commentary.

I have some things to say about the group trying to track down down Hughes but I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't seen it yet....

The movie doesn't really provide any new insights/information on Hughes or his movies but it's worth the watch just for the cast interviews, I think.

I agree with you Veronica [Smile]

I just went hunting on IMDB and laughed at this guys comment:

""""This movie is unbelievably terrible. I consider myself to be a huge fan of John Hughes, I own every single film he has been attached to, every soundtrack available, every poster, every book (although barely any) and I have never been so disappointed with a film in my life. You had no research on this man, no mention of his best films and if you did mention them it was quickly thrown in there. This film other than the people that worked with him is pretty much a bunch of *beep* kids that no one cares about talking about how teen films don't relate to them anymore...they repeat that a *beep* load of times....GOD! You should have made a biography on this genius, not stalking him and pretending that you are the only ones that have really tried to contact this man.
And Kevin Smith?!?!??!?!? my *beep* christ, this guy is the biggest *beep* *beep* out there, every time Hughes is mentioned so is this *beep* claiming he took over what hughes started???? What the *beep* are you talking about?

I have made it a promise to myself to make a biography on this great artist and talk about EVERY FILM not only early teen films but his best works like SHES HAVING A BABY, PLANES TRAIN AND AUTOMOBILES, UNCLE BUCK, CURLY SUE, ETC.
If not a documentary than it will be a book because the people need to know that this man did NOT only make "a few great films in his lifetime" - (Kevin Smith) He has set the path for comedies that we now see.
*beep* you film crew that stalked Hughes.
Maybe the fact that you we were so insensitive drove him to bad health.

-just a fan, just a thought""""""

I guess one of the guys involved with the film rebutted him hmmmm?

Wow!! That's a pretty harsh review! I agree though that a biography on John Hughes would have been much more interesting to watch...But in defense of the filmmakers, Hughes was still alive when they made this so they weren't trying to do a retrospective of his life or anything like that.

Who cares what a bunch of teens think about Hughes? They aren't going to say anything that hasn't been said a million times by the people who actually grew up with the movies rather than seeing them as retro artifacts. Waaaaaay too narcissistic. A two minute series of sound bites from a bunch of young people would've done the trick.

As for the reviewer, he's right about Kevin Smith, but he sounds like he's having some kind of ****ing contest. This:

quote:
I consider myself to be a huge fan of John Hughes, I own every single film he has been attached to, every soundtrack available, every poster, every book (although barely any)
...is meaningless. In the age of the internet *nothing* has any real 'fan' value anymore. A noob can go online and in one day order every Hughes movie, book, poster and soundtrack ever released. What does it prove? It proves they have an internet connection and money to spend.

A bunch of teens went out and made a doc on a filmmaker they probably only heard of last week; it was self-indulgent and mediocre. Life goes on. This guy makes it sound like attempted murder.

Anyone else starting to think Logan5 wrote the review that Muffy is referencing from IMDB? ha

Incredible passion behind your point of view!

I watched this recently, but was less than impressed as well.

hahaha, Valley!

The woman that wrote a blog about being pen-pals with Hughes was way more interesting than anything that docu had to offer. I would suggest people read that instead of sitting through "Don't You Forget About Me."

"Sincerely, John Hughes"

I was aware of the similarities myself. I was going to post a line about him sounding a little like me, but I thought I'd better not draw attention to it!

It was posted on the John Hughes RIP thread when he died. It's a very fitting tribute to the 'man' that most of us only know as a filmmaker. It's great to find out people we admire for their talent are also nice people too.

It was on TV last night, and I only turned it on when it was almost over. I hope they play it again. Funny, they played Ferris Bueller after, and even though I've seen it a gazillion times, I had to watch it again! I just hope they play the documentary a few more times.

I'm watching the documentary and love the film clips and cast interviews.

"When you grow up your heart dies"

Watching it now is kind of sad foreshadowing because there are several references about the fact that John Hughes was still alive.

Overall, I'm enjoying it, but agree with Veronica, Muffy, and others that while it is a worthy effort.. it could have been better with true 80's fans input.

Ronnie.. I thought it was worth it for the cast interviews. Judd Nelson almost made me tear up when he said that he would really like to have a discussion with John Hughes.. other than the ones he has with him in his head all the time.

I was in Canada and was going to bed one night and pulled up my netflix. I some how stumbled upon this (which I don't believe is on the US instant). I watched the first half of the movie (fell asleep half way through because it was really late). It was kind of bad but it was still grabbing me. I agree the interviews with the actors did have some good stuff. The interviews with random teens was poorly done I thought. Anyway, I thought I'd check on here because I remember talk about this.

Veronica, the blog you posted on here was super cool. That was a great read and I'm glad I clicked on it. Thank You!

I hope to finish this movie at some point but I was pretty sure I knew how it would end.
