Imagine a movie co directed by George A Romero (Night/Dawn/Day/Land/Diary of the dead), and John Hughes, and you have Dance of the Dead.

When the dead start to arise in a small town (whose local nuclear power plant sits next to the cemetary), the only people that can save the world is a bunch of teenagers (sci fi geeks, loners, stoner musicians) who were unlucky enough not to have dates to the prom that night! The film is a really playful and loving rendition of the classic (some would say cliched) zombie movie, but it's done so tongue in cheek that it reminds you of a low budget Sean of the Dead.

It also reminds of the best of John Hughes, particularly The Breakfast Club, in the way that it brings together so many different groups of teenagers, forcing them to join forces and understand each other, and helping them grow into better people - the slacker becomes the leader, the punk band save the mainstream with their music rather than try to rage against it, the violent loner realises the error of his ways.
All the characters are well written, and even though they are based on cliches, they are bought alive, and you do care for them.

The effects are fine, nice and gross in places, but my favorite was the scene in the cemetary when all the zombies were rising. The older bodies were kind of shuffling along, but the new corpses were almost exploding out of their graves, running before they hit the ground!

Dance of the Dead - ch-ch-check it out!

Is this one of those Ghosthouse Underground films? If it is I've seen previews of it. I may check it out.
