Downloaded this from Itunes. It's really good, believe it or not. I was starting to have my doubts about Metallica after St. Anger. I hope the rest of the album (in stores Sept. 12!) is good.

I'm impressed with this so far. They definitely needed to redeem themselves after St. Anger. A friend of mine saw them at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee back in June and he said their new stuff sounded awesome live. They still need Newstead but that'll never happen due to James' huge ego. Trujillo is good, but to me he just seems like he doesn't fit in or something.......

heard the new stuff is supposed to be more in the vein of the 'One' album. Can't wait for the disc to come out.

Looking forward to it, I just hope they learned their lessons from St.Anger. No more of that crappy drum sound(sounded like banging on pots), let Hammett solo again.

Anything would sound closer to their older stuff than St. Anger. The drum sound was terrible in St. Anger as Riptide said.......

I just realised how poor my Metallica collection has been, I sold Load , Re-Load and St. Anger, the only thing semi-current I have of theirs is the two disc Garage days revisited. Please Metallica, just give us a solid 10 song album.

I can't believe I haven't had the chance to download this yet. I don't even know if it's on the UK iTunes store but hopefully I will finally get the chance to look tonight.
As for St. Anger, whilst it was waaaaay off their best I think it still produced a couple of good songs and that it was something they needed to do as a band. Now with Phil the Therapist and Bob Rock nowhere to be seen I have high hopes for Death Magnetic and will almost certainly be downloading it on itunes and Guitar Hero when it comes out.

Agreed with both previous 2 posts. Whilst Bob is to be commended for his work on the Black album (and Load and Reload in some part) I think he and the band should have parted ways on St Anger. Don't get me wrong, I don't blame him for making the album the way it was but when your producer is starting to write and play bass for you its time to get a new producer.

That's a dangerous combination when the producer thinks he is in the band, I know Bernie Rhodes helped to ruin the Clash later in their career in this fashion. But for Rock to leave that drum sound on St. Anger was unforgivable. And I also think Rock influenced them to give that "we're not a metal band" spiel in the 90's which cost them big time. Absurd coming from a band called Metallica.

In those 96 interviews they made this big deal about the Black album coming out when most weren't familiar yet with the influential music of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. And that everything changed in their approach to music after Nevermind. No it's coming out how much Kurt loved Metallica and he was a closet metalhead. So tell me the point of that front?

I'm suprised at Kurt being a metalhead. While I liked some of Nirvana's music, there were several other bands before Nirvana (Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc...) who should have gotten more credit. I still wish daily for a Soundgarden reunion..........

Next month I'm going to see Mudhoney, a real unappreciated Seattle band. I hear they can still rip it up. I agree on Soundgarden, they broke up too early for my liking, and a gosh darn shame about Layne Staley dying like he did.

I did get to see Soundgarden once back in 1996 like a year before they broke up. They were doing a benefit show with Rage Against the Machine. Mudhoney has always been underrated.....

I think so, her and Kat Bjelland were frinds earlier on, but I think they had a dispute as to who originated the Baby Doll dress look.
