I have been a huge Runaways fan for several years now. Always liked Joan Jett & when I discovered she was originally in a band with Lita Ford, I went crazy trying to find their old albums. I became fascinated with this band and their story. NEVER in my wildest dreams did I think a movie about them would come out in 2010!!!! I saw it 2x in theaters, cause it was a limited release and just recently bought the Blu-ray.

What a great movie!! Kristen Stewart IS Joan Jett. No one else could've nailed that part!! And Dakota Fanning was exceptional as Cherie Currie!!!! I loved everything about this movie. It looked SOOOOO authentically 70's and the soundtrack is fantastic!! If you haven't seen it, rent it!!! I really don't think you'll come away disappointed. There are some great performances here [Wink] !!!!

I saw it and loved it! Like you said, the authenticity is what makes it so great. I thought the actor who played Kim Fowley was awesome too!

I haven't seen it yet but I do want to. I know Netflix has it but I'm the only one in my house who wants to see it so it'll be forever before I actually do.

I have not seen this movie yet, but one of my Facebook friends have complained that Lita Ford and Sandy West were barely mentioned in this movie. And she felt that if the movie is supposed to be about the entire group, then it should've featured ALL the group members equally.

This is what she wrote:
quote:

The movie completely ignored sandy and lita. The DVD has a short about filming the movie and cherie was in it a lot. But no mention of Sandy or Lita. And the movie showed where they are today. No mention of lita or sandy there either. Bummer!

That got me wondering if the movie was made without the consent of Lita and Sandy. And if I'm not mistaken, Jackie Fox was not mentioned at all because she refused to lend her name into the movie, so the movie used a fictitious name to "replace" her.

I do want to check it out also. I got on a Cherie kick after seeing her in Foxes. Lots of youtube vids from 70's Japanese television sets [Smile] Cherie does "chainsaw sculpture" and is still a good looking woman.

StevenHW, you're right about the Lita/Sandy thing. The sad thing is that Sandy passed away a few years ago, and they didn't even mention it at the end of the movie when they re-capped what all of the other band members ended up doing after the band broke up.

Yeah, I read that too. Something about Joan Jett's people offering Lita a ridiculously small amount of money to buy the rights to her story or whatever.

I watched it last night and while it was a good movie it could have been a great one.

It really saddens me they just couldnt put aside their differences and do one solid project instead of two (if you count EDGEPLAY- which Joan didnt participate in).

Also as someone whose read Cheries book (autographed copy!) twice, I kept waiting to see stuff happen that didnt. I know why this was though: they werent doing the movie as JUST Cheries story. They had to give at least Joan equal time cuz out of all of them Joan was the one to achieve the most success in the long run.

As small as Lita and Sandys parts were the inclusion of a charactor named "Robin" just pained me, but Jackie is a lawyer now so I guess you dont wanna **** HER off! Hahaha.

Now I feel I have to watch the movie again with the Commentary (Joan Jett, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning) on. Has anyone done that yet?

"The Runaways" was an excellent movie and I was totally impressed by the performances of both Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. I just watched an interview by Cherie Currie and she directly answered the Lita Ford question. Currie said that Lita Ford only has herself to blame for not having more of her story told in the movie. The movie was great, but I'd love to have more of the other band members with more significant roles.

I'm watching Cherie Currie in "Foxes" right now.

So I just finished watching "The Runaways" again and it is wicked how awesomely Michael Shannon channeled his inner Kim Fowley.

On a second viewing, it is incredible how Kristen Stewart made me believe her performance as Joan Jett.

I'm a bit disappointed that "The Runaways" still to this day can't totally get along. I would have really enjoyed getting the backstory on every bandmember.

** Cindy, Veronica, Ronnie and other fans of "The Runaways" .. I want to highly recommend the 2004 documentary "Edgeplay: A Film About The Runaways".

 -

If you couple "The Runaways" movie with this documentary it is the ultimate experience with regard to the band. Once again because they couldn't see eye to eye.. Joan Jett is only seen in archive footage, but you get interviews from Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Kim Fowley, Jackie Fox, Sandy West, Vicki Blue, Kari Krome,

and Cindy Mancini will enjoy this ... Suzi Quatro discusses Joan Jett!

And get this if anyone hasn't seen it yet.. you can watch it on Netflix Instant Watch:

Netflix

Valley, yes, I am familiar with Edgeplay. I came across this film years ago when I started my quest to find all things Runaways.

I like this documentary & feel it is a great archival piece of work regarding the band. It's shocking & disturbing to see & hear the detailed accounts of the other group members like Lita, Jackie & Sandy. It's a bummer that Joan didn't participate, since she had such an important role in the band. Man, these girls just couldn't play nicely together. Poor Sandy, she has since passed on but I think she would have been happy to see this project come to fruition all these years later.

The Runaways with K-Stew and Fanning is a glossy & edited view into the story of this band. Edgeplay, however, is just the opposite. It's raw & gritty and at times, not pretty. In the end, however, it is the more accurate tale of the two movies. If you're a Runaways, Lita or Joan fan, see this documentary. You won't be disappointed.

So much is mentioned about the influence of Suzi Quatro in both "The Runaways" movie and the documentary. Infact, the doc is full of Suzi Quatro tunes.

So what are some of your fav Quatro tunes that I need to check out?

 -

And I mentioned this once before, but I think it is wild that Suzi 'Leather Tuscadero' Quatro from "Happy Days" is the aunt of Sherilyn Fenn who was in several gems in the 80's.

Sherilyn Fenn has a blog and she wrote a whole post about Suzi at one time. She didn't really have the best things to say about her, but it's still an interesting read....

Veronica.. wow.. Sherilyn Fenn sounds just jealous and bitter. She is basically redirecting her anger about her parents at Suzi. Kind of sad really.

Still a fan of Sherilyn Fenn, but that was just brutal to read.

Yeah, the whole thing is a little off the wall...Sounds to me like she didn't really know Suzi that well, and as a kid was maybe a little jealous of all of the attention she received.

She's better known in the UK as one of the Queens of 'glam' rock; 'Can the Can', 'Devil Gate Drive', etc.

I quite liked Sherilyn's blog. She seemed like she was being totally honest, even if she didn't sound like she was being nice.
