Pop duo - dollar - David van day and thereza bazar.

Talking of the cheesetastic 80s UK group - bucks fizz made me think of the equally cheesy but fun hits of the 70s/80s UK pop duo - dollar, only ever purchased 2 of there hits - mirror mirror and - oh l'amour but I'm sure they had a few more!

https://youtu.be/S1DhT3WVApQ - oh l'amour by dollar which was shot at Hastings pier.

https://youtu.be/oq-BkEdXyz8 - mirror mirror by dollar

Any - dollar fans out there?

Ok... pop trivia time...

Dollar were originally members of the ensemble group 'Guys and Dolls' who had several UK hits in the 70's:

There's a Whole Lot of Loving

When David Van Day left for a solo career his girlfriend Thereza Bazar was kicked out the group, so his solo career became a 'duo':

Shooting Star

They had several hits for a couple of years before their career stalled. They then hooked up with Producer Trevor Horn (who was not yet the name he would become) and he gave them another string of (classic) hits:

Hand Held in Black and White

Mirror Mirror

Give Me Back My Heart (Trevor shamelessly stealing from 10cc)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6ZCa9PI4Vs

Videotech

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WsVojpeWlw

Then they split up.

David had one minor solo hit.

Young Americans Talking

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ5XDU_jc04

And appeared in the horror anthology movie 'Screamtime':

Thereza recorded a solo album and the theme for a movie...

Gotcha

They got back together in the late 80's and recorded a little more, including a cover version of an Erasure song...

Oh L'Amour

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7LO-Xy-FDA

Which became a big hit. But that was it for them really.

They reformed for a reality TV show in the 00's. David joined Bucks Fizz and then split off from them even though he was never a member - this even created a lawsuit in which he fought for the right to use the name!

I honestly have no idea why I went into all that.

You're right, 'Hand Held' was their first single with Trevor Horn, and Mirror Mirror was the second. I don't think they ever made a video for Hand Held though, so you only ever see 'live' TV performances.

The early material is bit too fluffy but Videotech is good, you can definitely hear Anne Dudley there.

Gotcha is great of course and Young Americans Talking isn´t bad either.

Pop Trivia time from Logan 5, i like it [Smile]

Only have a greatest hits cd of them, sadly never came across any vinyl. I liked Mirror, Mirror and a few others. Pretty melodic, but a bit too glossy, I think too much Abba influence. Funny about Hand Held, that production piqued the interest of ABC who seeked out Trevor Horn to make their huge statement the Lexicon of Love album. So they did have that influence.
