I love Nenah Cherry. I wasn't sure whether to put her in the 80's or 90's, but since her biggest was "Buffalo Stance" in 1989, 80's it is.

When Buffalo Stance came out, I had never heard anything like it before. The charts in Australia at that stage were dominated by pure pop and pub rock, and for a hiphop song to make the top 20 was a big deal.

The follow up "Manchild" is a song that should have been a hit but wasn't. I'd be interested to know how it went in other countries.

1989's "Raw like Sushi" album is a brilliant album, but my favorite Nenah Cherry album is 1992's "Homebrew". With a mix of sas and serious, it's an album that takes you on an emotional journey. In fact the last song, "Red Paint" makes me cry whenever I hear it.

1996's "Man" suprised a few people because Nenah did not rap at all on the album. Not all of the songs were immediate, but after a few listens the album grew on me.

I'm looking forward to the next Nenah Cherry album, but at this stage I don't think she has any plans as she is busy raising a family.

Neneh Cherry is pretty cool. I too was entranced when I first heard Buffalo Stance on the radio, something really grabbed me when I heard it, the proeduction was very original and innovative, it just stuck out from the pack of R&B and Hip Hop artists. I only recall seeing videos for Buffalo Stance and Blowing Kisses on the Wind. I too bought the album Raw like Sushi, and was blown away by the track Manchild, it still sounds way ahead of it's time, the production, everything. I don't recall hearing Manchild being a hit single elsewhere, but there could have been some countries who were more open minded for a startling original sounding song.

Neneh Cherry can definetly be qualified as an 80's artist. In fact she was doing music in the early 80's, I think there is material of hers as a mere teenager on this dub-influenced post punk supergroup New Age Steppers. The Slits singer Ari Up was in that group too, and they were friends for while, but I think had a falling out. I saw Ari Up and her group the Warriors earlier this year, and she didn't have that many nice things to say about her, nor her step father, Sex Pistols/PIL singer Johnny Rotten. Neneh's father was a famous Jazz musician named Don Cherry.

I folowed her after Raw like Sushi abit, but I only remembered the Red Hot and Blue song Got you under my skin, and remember she had a big hit later with a song whose title eludes me. It was a popular video, where neneh and some other girls were in the street giving off some female empowerment to some construction workers and other onlookers. Why can't I remember the song title?

I remember Buffalo Stance. It wasn't too long ago that I either heard the song on an 80s show on the radio or saw the video on VH1 Classic. I can't remember which. That was the only song of hers I ever heard.

Here in the UK "Buffalo Stance" was a big hit, played for a long time on the radio
"Manchild" was a minor hit but was still in the top end of the chart, i remember the video with her hlding about and walking near a washing line? i think it may have been her baby, i do seem to remember her performing while pregnant at one stage.

"7 seconds" is the most often played song of hers here these days, my favorite id say as well.

I just read an article about her a few months ago, I think it was in Entertainment Weekly or People Magazine. She is still performing music and she has a daughter that is in her early 20's. I think she was 41-43, can't remember exactly.

Actually the only song I remember from her was "Buffalo Stance" and I loved it. I still get excited when I hear it on the radio!!

i love this song because back in my skating days, the roller rink would always play this song and it definitely had everyone out on the floor. funny thing, that i never really knew all the words to the song. i think i'll look them up in a minute.

isn't her brother, eagle eye cherry?...the guy that sings, SAVE TONIGHT, which was a one-hit wonder (that i know of, anyway) back in the late 90s?
i could have sworn i read that somewhere.

Manchild...

Ok, you’re on your own, it’s late
Your girlfriend is on another date with the hero in your dream
Turn around, ask yourself. so, you think you’re gonna win this time manchild?

Is it the pain of the drinking
Or the sunday sinking feeling
The car never seems to work
When it’s late your girlfriend’s on a date
And the hero with her in your dream
In your sleep it seemed to like you
Turn around and ask yourself
Turn around ask yourself

Chorus:
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state you’re in

Could you go undercover
And sell your brand new lover (could you)
Be someone else for a night
Maybe someone else will love you
You sell your soul for a tacky song
Like the one you hear on the radio
Turn around ask yourself
Turn around and ask yourself

Chorus:
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state you’re in
Manchild, he will make you cry
Manchild, manchild, manchild

From monday down to friday
You’re working on another man’s car
Or is it in the factory?
It doesn’t matter where you are

Just turn around and ask yourself is this communication
Accentuate the positive and give some illustration
See manchild, you’re no one, you turn the microphone on
Control communication when I’m kickin’ it and so on
To the point that I need, the air that I breathe
Into an audience that’s waiting and ecstatic to receive
For the meantime another mean rhyme, I keep on sayin’ it
I know what the time is the crowd will keep playing it
Through the speaker boxes loud’s my diagnosis
’cause I believe in miracles and words in heavy doses.
Enough r-e-s-p-e and c-t
Respect yourself express no stress the mike is easy
Just believe that all you need is the air that you breathe.
Turn around ask yourself

Chorus:
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state you’re in
Manchild, he will make you cry
Manchild, manchild, manchild
He’s the apple of your eye

Once bitten twice shy, why don’t you bite me again
Just take it in the right and go tell your friend
Are you ready for the words I turn the microphone on
A figure of speech to reach you at the back and so on
The style I’m stimulating dance floors
Raise your body temperature now and
This demands for power in the amp you know louds my diagnosis
’cause I believe in miracles and words in heavy doses

Wind on my face, sound in my ears
Water from my eyes, and you on my mind
As I sink, diving down deep...deeper into your soul.

No moneyman can win my love
It’s sweetness that I’m thinking of.
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
We do the dive every time we dance
I’ll give you love baby not romance
I’ll make a move nothing left to chance
So don’t you get fresh with me

But the best part of the song is ....Gigolo, Huh, sukka?

Don't forget the songs "Heart" & "Kisses On The Wind.

I think the best lyrics on the "Raw like sushi" album are from "The Next Generation"

The children are the chosen ones,
Society's got it's piorities wrong. the schools are closing down.
Don't be messing with our future - black babies, white babies,
Quarter puerto ricans, two sixths chinese,
Any combination you could possibly imagine,
But this important as the ground we walk on, people are people you know what I mean,
Even the baby with a portaphone
Attached to its' buggy pushed by a clone
And the black market baby that unwanted baby.
For 50,000 dollars it belonged to the rich lady
Well she didn't like his face,
She said it didn't matter
'cause her husband was a surgeon.
Ha ha ha ha - urr - sick
Ain't ain't that ain't that sick -
Shucks it breaks my heart.
Operate on a baby urr sick.

Hey what's that sitting in my lap
Why it's the next generation.
And do you know what comes from the best love in the world you could possibly ever have,
Yes it's the next generation
