Heard this song on the radio today, brought back a flood of memories. Love that humming intro sound, it seemd like such a touching tribute to Marvin Gaye who had died not long before. Did Lionel Richie do any singing on this song, or was he out of the group busy with his solo efforts at the time?

This definitely is one of my all time favorites. Lionel Richie left the band before they recorded this with a new singer, I think.

I remember my mom always liked this song, and it came out when my friends and I were all listening to Tina Turner, and Cyndi Lauper, and Prince and Bryan Adams.... I always liked the song, but it was one of those songs that you actually were afraid to admit to liking around your friends, but then a bunch of my friends were at my house one night and my mom played that song, and they were like...I love that song, so then I thought...wow cool, now I can admit that I like it too.
Everytime I hear it...it is very nostalgic to me too.

"Nightshift" (1985) was the Commodores hit AFTER Lionel Ritchie left the group. I think it was probably their only hit after Ritchie left. Yet, I prefer this song better than any of their earlier songs and Lionel's stuff!
It was, as you say, a touching tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, both of whom died the year before.
In the late 80's, I remember hearing on the radio a reggae version of this song by some group (which I don't recall at the moment), and they added another lyric to include Bob Marley as a tribute to the song.
Anyway, here are the original lyrics:

(1.) "My Dear Mr. Gaye" by Teena Marie
(2.) "Missing You" by Diana Ross, even though she doesn't mention his name. That song was also written by Lionel Ritchie.

Why must you always waste valuable space by posting lyrics to a song when someone can simply look them up if they want?

I like seeing the lyrics, because alot of the songs I didn't know what the heck they were singing, and if you see them again, it kind of adds more to the song your posting about if you put the words down.
Plus...what else is being posted? That is taking up tons of spaces...I personally like seeing lyrics, and pictures, and links to stuff, I think it is like having a cubicle at work...that you dress up with little sentimential things to make it more homey..that is my personal feeling...when you don't add stuff to make it feel like that, it's like your stuck in a cubicle with barren walls, with nothing to look at, and that is so boring.
