I love this song...but I want to know about the lyrics...what does he mean by...I am coming down like a monkey???
Maybe I am missing something?? Some of Genesis's lyrics I have never quite understood....like what does "Abacab" mean??? I mean...I love the song, but I have no clue what it's about??

This is my favorite Genesis song. It has an absolutely splendid background rhythm, and flows rather well.

That song always makes me think of the Michelob beer commercial it was used for.

I don't know what "Tonight..." is all about, but as far as "Abacab" goes - A,B,A,C,A,B is just the chord sequence of the song.....so it doesn't actually mean anything at all!

This song is a little to slow for me. I like the faster Genesis stuff.
A kid that I went to school with played this song while he was committing suicide because it was his favorite song. Maybe that is why I have an aversion to it.

Holy Cripes...Jessie...that would definately put a damper on liking any song.
My favorite song by Genesis is : Follow You, Follow Me and then maybe In the Air tonight.
I like alot of Phil Collins single stuff...I think one of my favorites of his is: I don't care anymore.

It was definately The Air Tonight.
ISIS was referring to the Genesis song "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight", which appeared on the group's Invisible Touch CD in 1986.
"In The Air Tonight" is from Phil Collins' solo album, Face Value (1981).

I remember this period when Tonight, Tonight, Tonight came out. The charts were really hit left and right by the Genesis stuff and the Phil Collins stuff so it kind of blurred for me as to which act it was. genesis definetly had a huge sound with the drums druing this poeriod, funny I was listening to Susudio on ther radio recently and the rythm tracks sound so much like Prince's 1999 track which I never noticed before.

It still kind of makes you wonder where they come up with some of their lyrics...but I like that...because it is different...and their songs are so powerful...especially the music.
I have never understood how people "write" music...I find that fascinating because how do you decide what sounds go where, and how to put it all together...I think it is amazing.

i never liked Tonight Tonight Tonight. i also never liked sussudio, or however it's spelled. genesis is cool though. when it comes to collins as a solo artist, i love his serious hits live cd. that rocks. he had a string of hits over all these years. heck i even liked the music he did for the disney cartoon, Tarzan. and i also really liked his cover of cyndi lauper's True Colors.

Aaagh, can't stand the later Disney era of Phil Collins, he just went into a purely commericial, boring adult contemporary direction. When I hear his current stuff I wonder if this is the same man who sang Mama (his best vocal performance IMO).The man used to sing with such passion.

It's always bugged me that the "Invisible Touch" album was their biggest seller by miles, but it's by far their weakest one IMO. That album - and in partucular "Land Of Confusion" and "In Too Deep" - were where it started to go horribly wrong for Genesis.
All of the Collins-era stuff from '76 onwards was great, with "Duke" being the absolute high point, but "Invisible Touch?" Nope, sorry - not for me. It'll always be "The Lamb....","Nursery Cryme" and "Foxtrot" that sum up Genesis in Duckie-world!

I remember watching Phil Donahue's talk-show in 1988 when Phil Collins made a guest appearance, promoting his movie "Buster". In it, someone in the studio audience asked him which eras of Genesis that he prefers, the early albums or the more recent ones. IIRC, Collins said that he liked the more recent ones.
Collins also mentioned that he was well aware that there were two kinds of Genesis fans:
(1.) The ones who liked the really early 70's stuff, especially when Peter Gabriel was in the group.
(2.) The ones who enjoyed the more recent material. That is, after Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett left the band.
The most noticable change is the musical style. The Invisible Touch album saw the group becoming more commercialized and slick, and not the "progressive rock" band that it used to be in the 70's. It alienated some of their long-standing fans, but it gained more acceptance on Top-40 radio.
