My younger brother, who just turned 26, has been diagnosed with both an intellectual disability and a mild mental illness. We've been trying to find a place in New York where he can not only be safe but also feel part of a real community — somewhere with structure, but not restrictive, and where he can develop practical and social skills. So far, it’s been hard to find an environment that doesn’t feel cold or institutional. Does anyone have experience with any centers or programs that truly support personal growth and engagement?

I was in a very similar situation with my cousin last year — he needed a structured but uplifting environment after he aged out of school-based supports. We finally found a center that offered a day program developmental disabilities option that felt like a real turning point. They provide tailored daily activities, focus on life skills, and — what made the difference for us — there’s a big emphasis on social interaction and inclusion. He started making friends, became more communicative, and even joined a cooking group, which he now loves. We chose Gateway Counseling Center, and I honestly can't overstate the change it brought for him. It doesn’t feel like a “program,” more like a second home.
