This site has helped me locate a bunch of other movies from my childhood. However between google searches, youtube, imdb, amazon, and columbiahouse, I still can't find this one last movie I am thinking of. I am almost positive this movie is from the 80s; I saw it when I was maybe 5 (1989). Here is what I can remember of it:

Some boy (or girl?) is on a quest somewhere. There is a castle involved and there is some scene outside the castle walls. I remember it being a dark scene. There is also some evil character taking the protagonist's memories? or thoughts? in the form of crystal balls that roll down and out a gum-ball machine type thing.

Could this be the Neverending Story II?

I think that is one of the Never Ending Stories. The Never Ending Story 2 maybe.
