These were the best for us kids who didnt have a lot of money - They were compilation albums with all the current hits and like 3 or 4 "filler tracks" you'd never heard of slipped in! I used to spend all my babysitting money on 45s and K-Tel albums.
If they still HAD these I would buy up all the old ones I used to have! I know I had ones with TONI BASIl, THE GO GOS, THE SPARKS, A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS...... Ahhhh...good times, good times.

Those 'Filler' songs were usually pretty horrible. i remember seeing a bunch of K-Tel records back in the 70s.

I never had them in the actual 80's, but I did pick up some used ones in the past five years. I already had some of the more popular songs on cd, but there's always forgotten hits that don't get much airplay like Double's Captain of her Heart.v

K-Tel has an extremely poor record with their CD releases. Most of them are terrible, filled with unlabeled re-recordings and such, but there have been a few decent ones. I have one that's all '80s Soft Rock songs and it's a pretty solid comp with overall good sound quality. I think the closest thing we have now to those old K-Tel vinyl comps is probably the "Now" CD series.

I completely agree with you.
I bought a few of the old K-Tel albums back in the 70's. They're scratchy now and I don't play them.
For the current music scene, the "NOW: That's What I Call Music!" series are now doing what K-Tel did back in the 70's and 80's.
The only other 70's CD series that comes sorta close to the K-Tel collection are the "Have A Nice Day" series from Rhino Records. A group of some hits, some classic, some nearly-forgotten, and others are just simply cheesy! And the kind of the selection that K-Tel would've done.

I thought of the NOW comparison too.
Awhile back their was this company - I THINK it was RAZOR AND TIE but dont quote me on that - that used to put out '70s and '80s compilation CDs that were really really good. Stuff like TOTALLY '80s and EASY '70s.....and THEY didn't put filler.....all their "cheesy songs " were legitimate hits (like My Baby Takes The Morning Train by SHEENA EASTON and Afternoon Delight by STARLAND VOCAL BAND). I had all their compilations on casette (CASETTE? WHat was I thinking? Should have just paid the extra $5 and got CDs!)
To this day I love those commercials on TV (AS SEEN ON TV!) where they show you music compilations CD. I used to buy them, they'd come in the mail and I'd find I HAD all these sonsg at home already - but the commercials just made them seem so tempting!

Lol. I have the entire "Have a Nice Day" series as well as other Rhino collections like the "Didn't It Blow Your Mind" and "Just Can't Get Enough". And those Razor & Tie collections mamamia mentioned, I have as well. There were 3 of them and they were all 2-Disc sets: "Awesome '80s", "Totally '80s" and "Forever '80s". All three were mastered by the great Steve Hoffman, so the sound quality is amazing. Unlike a lot of modern CD's the dynamic range isn't sacrificed in order to max out the volume. I highly recommend them.

Most of these albums my sisters had in the 70s usually wound up either in yard sales used as Frisbees, or flat out smashed.
