Can anyone explain the movie plot of "Oscar" to me? I have watched the film three times, and it's a very confusing movie. It has Peter Riegert, Sylvester Stallone, and Tim Curry in it.
(This is a welcome back posting for me.)

It is so wierd that i came across this today as i was watching this film on TV this morning.

The film is a stage farce type story and goes something like this.

Snapps Provelone (Sly) is a gangster who promises his father on his deathbed that he will go straight, so he decides to go into the banking business and the story builds from there on the morning that he is supposed to be meeting the bankers to sign the deal. The farce elements build from

- His daughter who is supposed to be marrying a wealthy local business man is actually in love with the ex-chauffer (The Oscar of the title) and tells her father that she is pregnant by him to stop the marriage. Her father (Snapps) finds out that the wealthy business man is actually having an affair with his maid who he promptly fires. Now the daughters suiter is out of the picture he decides to marry her off to his young lawyer, who he then finds out has been ripping him off so that he can marry someone else, a girl that claims to also be Snapps daughter. As the lawyer does not want to marry the daughter he convinces a professor that has been giving Snapps elocution lessons that the daughter is in love with him so that he will marry her instead. When the new maid turns up from the agency, it turns out to be Snapps first love from when he got into the racket years ago, who it turns out is the mother of the girl claiming to be Snapps daughter that is marrying the lawyer that snapps was trying to marry off to his original daughter and it turns out had a child by Snapps all those years ago.

ARE YOU WITH ME SO FAR.

- There is a secondary farce in the guise of a set of cases, 1 containing jewels, 1 containing 50k in cash and 1 containing the ex-maids underwear being swapped back and forth between Snapps, the maid, the business man and Snapps cronies.

- There is also another plot line that follows a cop who is after Snapps and is convinced that he is not going straight.

It is quite a funny film (although it will never make a classic top 10 anywhere), but you have to concentrate a little to keep up.

There are some good performances from Peter Riegert and Tim Curry that do stand out from the rest. Also look out for the very lovely Onella Muti (Mings daughter from Flash Gordon) as Snapps wife.
