Just watched The Exorcist again and yep, it´s still a classic in my books. This was the first time i saw the 11 extra minutes.
The cast is excellent, especially Linda Blair, Jason Miller and Max von Sydow shine. Wikipedia says: "Because of death threats against Blair, Warner hired bodyguards to protect her for six months after the film's release". I wonder if this is true? It´s a crazy world we live in...
The special effects are still shocking and i almost felt Regan´s pain when they examined her in the hospital.
Your thoughts on The Exorcist, fellow Rewinders! And i want to know why Helen dislikes this film!

A work colleague went to school in Washington, DC, and he is quite eager to tell anyone who'll listen that he can show you the staircase that Jason Miller goes down in the film. "The power of Christ compels you!"

"The "Exorcist steps", stone steps at the end of M Street in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. were padded with 1/2"-thick rubber to film the death of Karras. The stuntman tumbled down the stairs twice. Georgetown University students charged people around $5 each to watch the stunt from the rooftops." (Wikipedia)

I've watched it twice and both times it has bored me to tears. And I just hated the speed of which she went from normal to a face full of scabs, geez have a bit of build up. I really felt that apart from the only good part, the ending, there is just no atmosphere. Now part 3 is a really well made film with great writing, direction and acting, had me gripped. I've yet to see part 2.

I'll have sign on to the 'not as good as I expected' club. I wasn't very impressed with it when I saw it. I know that it was a genre-starter of a movie that had a major impact, but I just can't get over the fact that I didn't really enjoy it.
I think I preferred 'Audrey Rose'...

I'll throw my hat into the ring here. I don't think that The Exorcist is the greatest horror movie ever made, nor do I even think that it is top 50. The subject matter is provocative, for sure--people are afraid of the devil--and it's technically pretty well done for the era. And, of course, how can you not love a scene that's a direct crib of a Biblical story about a demon, a cliff, and a swine-herd? That said, The Exorcist is really of more historical interest. It got folks to turn the corner on the treatment of horror films as serious cinema. Here was a big studio horror film that was critically acclaimed, that people loved, that made a lot of money, and got Oscar nominations. Horror movies were no longer all just disreputable, low-class junky films. For that, The Exorcist deserves acclaim. As a film, the original The Omen is much superior.

Oh boy... I love Lind Blair but everything else in this film sucks. Horrible, horrible film.
Richard Burton sleepwalks through the movie and was, like some people say, probably drunk most of the time.
The director John Boorman recut the film few times in response to poor audience reactions, now i want to find a version which includes only the Linda Blair scenes

You can't have Exorcist II without locusts !
On a side note.. In that pic, Linda Blair certainly looks.. uhm.. older. Let's just keep it at that ! Posts: 963 | From: The Netherlands | Registered: Jun 2011 | Site Updates: 0

By the way.. talking about The Exorcist, i must say i am NOT a fan of that so called 'Version You've Never Seen', which Warner Brothers and Friedkin decided to release in 2000. I think the spider-walk scene with Linda Blair was wisely left out in the original cut.
Having said that, i also think the original cut would have been better off without the rotating head scene.
Both of these scenes were just too over the top in an otherwise very solid and subdued horror story.
As for The Omen.. yes, it's stylish.. it's decent.. but it's also very by-the-numbers. I just don't see anything ground-breaking or earth-shattering about it.. i just don't.

I love The Omen, great film with some very fine performances, especially Gregory, Lee ( a much underrated actress) and Billie. The Exorcist isn't the greatest, but a milestone in horror film history. Mike Oldfield was at the same school as myself, currently under threat of demolition and turned into a housing estate !!!!

i remember the scene where the lady fell on the omen, it reminded me of the falling scene on psycho, and the parody of that falling scene on the silence of the hams. funny stuff, however father karas falling at the end was a great fall scene, as far as fall scenes go,(another exceptional fall scene would be that of roddy piper in they live, exiting meg foster's apartment)
outside of that i cant really decide which is the better movie, i can say that the exorcist two is a very weird movie, like a fever dream, and i agree linda blair is quite fetching in that.
i was having a discussion the other day about john landis's book, 100 years of movie monsters in which he stated a few times that the exorcist in his opinion was the scariest movie of all time, i disgree, i believe its one of the following three: a nightmare on elm st (1984) the thing (1982) or the texas chainsaw massacre(1974)
the only thing i found real scary about the omen was not damian but the crazy disciples of his, namely the looney maid that jumped out the window, or that sinister nurse. Same goes for the satan enthusists on rosemary's baby.
