When I did a retro party last year, I got temporary tattoos off Ebay, they were peace signs, and the ying and the yang, and flower power, and smiley faces, you can use those symbols, and take cardboard, and make your own decorations,or go to Party City. Get lava lights, and a beaded curtain, wear bandanas around your head, and heart shaped glasses, and tie dyed t-shirts. Play 70's music. Have a disco ball, play the Bee Gee's.
Play Twister! Have fun at your party. Watch Saturday Night Fever, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

To prepare yourself beforehand, you need to see the 1990 movie The Spirit of '76:

(click below)
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0100670/combined

I would also suggest that you need the following:

  • Incense
  • "Black light" flourescent bulbs
  • Disco suit
  • CB Radios
  • Medallions (for the guys)
  • "Streakers" (I admit it: I was one of those!)
  • Platform shoes
  • Leisure suits
  • Suede clothing
  • The "Bowmar Brain" pocket calculator
  • Mathematical slide ruler
  • Turtlenecks
  • Mirror-reflecting sunglasses
  • A copy of the book "Jonathan Livingston Seagull"
  • Anything to do with Star Wars
  • "Mood Rings"
  • Brightly-colored (mainly, orange) shag carpeting
  • A Richard Nixon mask
  • 8-track tape player [Smile]
  • Comedy albums by Cheech & Chong and Steve Martin
  • An astrological sign wall poster
  • Anything with a "bicentennial" (1976) theme
  • An ABBA record (no CD's!)
  • A Donna Summer record (no CD's!)
  • A "Disco Sucks" t-shirt
  • A Steve Miller record (no CD's!)
  • A Led Zeppelin album (no CD's!)
  • Rainbow-colored wig (like that "John 3:15" guy)
  • Birkenstocks (in the 70's, they were sometimes known as "clogs" or "clunkers")

Also, all the guests must arrive by driving either the following cars:

TransAm
Ford Pinto
Carmen Ghia
The Gremlin
AMC Pacer
Chevy Impala
Chevy Van
Any K-Car
Dodge Charger
Any kind of VW (the Bug, the Rabbitt, the Thing)
Almost any "economy" car
Any station wagon (they don't make those anymore!)

Hope this helps! Good luck! [Cool]

and end the night by playing John Lennon's 'Imagine', or better yet hold it in Amsterdam and "get stoned to the bejesus belt" ('Caddyshack' reference there) [Wink]
