Sounds like It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World to me. Check it HERE to see if it's the one - although it was a 1963 movie!

Devolution here,

It sounds like "Honky tonk Freeway" but I don't think that it's it. Not based in london though.

I’ve always enjoyed the dash-for-the-cash genre type of film. I’ve seen it’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad world many times and of course in that one X marks the spot so no bridge there that I remember.....

Another one I remember which I think is Scavenger Hunt (1979) where a group of people have to collect objects to get their inheritance, which leads to people racing about with cars full of items like sheep and toilets etc.

I don’t think I’ve seen this one but I think this maybe your film, when reading the trivia section(below)it mentions that the real money was hidden in the BRIDGE the Statue of Liberty's nose, so I’m guessing the money in the movie was hidden in four bridges????

Trivia for
Million Dollar Mystery (1987)

Trivia

Glad Bags and DeLaurentiis Entertainment co-sponsored a real-life million-dollar "treasure hunt" to coincide with this film's release. At the end of the movie, the cash is still missing, and moviegoers were invited to find the location of the hidden stash, using clues provided in the film (the sponsors also emphasized that the money wasn't PHYSICALLY hidden anywhere, lest anyone injure themselves or damage property while searching for the loot; the audience just had to GUESS where the money was hidden). Ticket buyers were even given game cards shaped like American currency--with a big photo of Dino De Laurentiis where the President should be. In the end, it was a big disaster for the studio. The film was one of the major flops of the 1980s, barely grossing a million dollars at the box office, which the studio wound up forking over to the contest winner, a woman in Bakersfield, California incidentally, the money was hidden in the bridge of the Statue of Liberty's nose).

it does sound like it's a mad mad mad mad world although yes, it was in color and very definitely shot in america, not britain -- it's the quintessential american road-trip movie.

"it's under...a big... W..."
