That's a great idea, Smayt [Big Grin]

I'm sure there are other sites with chatrooms about eighties movies etc, but I feel like coming home here.
All the people are very nice and helpful (wich you can't always say on other sites )

So NO? you're no dumbass [Wink] In fact I'm gonna rate you for this magnificent proposal.

The one real reason for this is..... cost [Frown]

The site is extremely well visited, and one reason for this is that it's completely non-commercial. The only money coming in comes from (a) a fraction of a penny for each click that takes you to another site (either to buy a dvd or to see other information), and.... well that's it, actually. So Nick (the Site Webmaster) is keeping the site going from this, but there's nothing left for enhancements like a chatroom. The thing is, if we went more commercial and got sponsored, the site would lose it's independence and become just like any other movie website.

That's a shame [Frown]

I would hate it if this site would get commercial.
I'd rather pay membership or something like that.

Yes, It's those damn filthy apes... [Frown]

A chatroom would use a decent amount of extra bandwidth --bandwidth that we can ill afford at the moment.

This site already uses a lot of processing power, has it's own server (which I had to provide) and uses a ton of bandwidth and takes lots of time to update and manage.

Normally, as you know, by now it would be plastered in ad's, spam and pop-ups etc --all in a desperate effort to recover some of the cost of running it.

But I hate all that. [Frown] People lose sight of what the site is there for in the rush to reclaim the costs and end up driving all the visitors away...

So, for now, I'm fronting it, spam-free -with the help of some very kind folks who host the server that I provide for us and don't grumble when our bandwidth useage is excessive.

Of course, the whole thing costs money. Money that the site hasn't got a hope of repaying.

We get a few pennies only when someone buys something via our links, so rather than a membership fee (which is unfair on people who only want to look up the odd movie), I encourage you to please order your DVD's through our links if you can.

You get a good price, we get a tiny contribution and if they ever added up to much more than about $10 a month, then we could add some of these great features -and then pay for the bandwidth they might use...

-Nick

Chatrooms are always cool, there are plenty of free chat scripts out there that can be intergrated into an existing forum, but if Bandwidth is the main deter, then I say forego it for now. [Smile]

Nice to see that the chatroom idea created a good chat in itself.Shame it cant happen yet,but i agree with the reasons Nick gave.Ive only been loggin' onto this site for a short while and already its my favourite.I love movies and this is the best place to talk about them, plus im havin' a great time too! The other users seem to have a great sense of humour(kinda' like me [Big Grin] )and that makes this forum fun to be part of.Im glad im along for this ride dudes!!! [Cool] By the way,I see the Shrimpmeister has been elevated to God-hood! What did he do to achieve this? I hope it involved his head and a bra...! [Roll Eyes]

You don't need much bandwidth to run an IRC server, even one hosted on a modem connection is fast enough to allow quite a lot of people to chat in real time.

Besides you could always use the 80snostalgia.com IRC server [Smile]

I would also love to have a chatroom but I totally agree with the the actual policy of this website.

This is without a doubt the best '80s website on the Internet and I wouldn't like it to change a bit. Now that I know I can help by buying the DVD's using your links, you can count on me on that matter.

For what it's worth, thank you very much for this magnificent website...

Bye!

Nick, I don't know how much you know about IRC so I'll start at the beginning (others who know nothing about it will probably also be interested):

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, it's been around since the dawn of time (almost), the predecessor to webchat (*spit* I hate webchat stuff).

It's a text based chat system where users use an IRC program like mIRC (http://www.mirc.com, the most used program) to connect to a server (which could be a single server or many servers linked together to balance the load).

'Rooms' are called channels, for example #pc or #games and anything you type into the channel can be seen by all in that channel, you can be in as many channels as you want at the same time (just have many windows on screen), or you can message individuals privately without even being in a channel.

There are several status levels a user can have, the most basic one is no status (you're just there to chat), an OP which is a channel operator who has the ability to kick users out of the channel, ban users, set the channel modes and give/take operator status from other users. There's also a sysop level who can give themselves channel operator status in any channel they're in and has access to server settings.

There are three main ways of gaining channel operator status, if you're the first one in a channel you get OPs or an OP has to give you OPs or you're a sysop.

There are two types of user, human and bot, a bot can be setup to administer a channel, give OPs to users who have a user/pass with it, automatically kickban users you don't want in the channel, but they're not there for the nasty stuff as they can have fun stuff like games built in - fastest one to type the answer to... etc.

IRC servers are freeware, no licence or cost to use them (other than the machine you run it on), and they don't take up much bandwidth as it's just text flying around. I've run IRC servers on my Amigas fine in the past when playing around with linking two servers together.

I actually hate irc/mirc [Mad] , I only use it as a last resort. [Big Grin]

And you do have to pay to get the program to run it, unless you go and download a cracked version. [Big Grin] [Razz]

You're just anti-mirc [Big Grin] I have mIRC too (although i prefer java chat which looks cooler [Wink] ), but on mIRC i can do some more stuff and join different servers. I don't have a cracked version, but i entered a serial number i got from somewhere [Wink] and i can't remember if there were any limitations before i entered the number [Confused] maybe there was a 30 days limit or something...

that's right, I despise that text based dinosaur [Big Grin] I like java chat's, ones where you get emoticons, and avatars, etc., and all that cool mirc stuff is there too(minus the spambots), you just have to pay for a chat membership. [Roll Eyes] [Big Grin] [Razz]

Some of us don't even need an IRC program to chat on IRC, I can do it with nothing more than a telnet program, typing in raw IRC codes [Big Grin]
Well I used to be able to, been literally years since I last did that so I'm probably a bit rusty now.

My copy of mIRC is an old one which isn't registered and doesn't have a 30day timeout.

Thanks for the explanantion wiz. I remember now using IRC in the real early days. It was kinda cool at the time to chat to people alll round the world.

What worries me is that bad folks might descend upon us and be rude and stuff, so we'd have to appoint a whole load of you folks as admins and stuff...

I'll speak with the sys-admin folks and see what we can do with regard to loading the right modules... [Smile]

Unfortunately that is the one main drawback of alot of chatrooms, people come in just to make trouble, and with mirc/irc, there are also spambots that visit every room and just spam the users and channel with Porn links and other useless links. [Roll Eyes]

There are some chatrooms and chat scripts that can make channels/rooms exclusive to the specific website it's linked to, you might wanna check into that, but still if someone comes to the main Fast-rewind site they can come to chat from the link there. [Confused]

So the only real way to keep rude people out would be to appoint several room Ops. Admins, etc. so that if someone needs to be kicked or banned, someone will be around to do it. [Smile]
